Based on performance, shouldn't we stop using the term pathetic, and change it to say, overachieving? You cant string together numbers like they have been doing and STILL be referred to as pathetic. Though, that would mean we may have to change the narrative that MO crapped the bed in FA....

Lets see what happens this week, but if they hold up, will you put that "pathetic" narrative to bed?
If they keep holding up then we can also drop the “over achieving”. Over achieving players turn into good or even great players.

I'll grant them overachieving status, as they are very much overachieving. The players, who lack any real talent, are motivated and working their butts off, and sticking to the scheme that Rallis has them implementing. Rallis is the real star of the D.

And, sorry, Monti still crapped the bed in FO. Can you imagine if we had even a decent edge and a DT who could get consistent push? These aren't the 2 "marquis" DTs he signed doing this, either--they sucked. Rallis is truly making chicken salad out of chicken ish.

I guess, once it comes down to seeing quantifiable results, that to continue to hold on to the narrative that they "lack any real talent" Is where I diverge. I would argue the perception was they lacked true talent, but they have proven otherwise.

Add in that football is a team sport, one could argue that building your line with a slew of well coached, previously under utilized or underappreciated free agents, and making them gel, bringing out their best is EXACTLY what a GM is supposed to do, in conjunction with the coaching, to ultimately field a competitive team. Superstars are great, even necessary, yes. But when we talk about building a team, a complete team, that's what I see happening. It would have been nice to add top level talent, but at what point in this re build will we let go of what our pre conceived notions of that means, watch what's happening on the field, and give credit where credit is die; to the GM, the coaches, and those misfit MFer players are balling their asses off right now, perceptions of some lack of talent be damned?

I can imagine what this team would have been like with an EDGE and a DT. Unfortunately, we lost 2 edge players, and our shiny new DT went down early as well. And when the inevitable argument comes that that was putting a lot of eggs in a basket of unknown quantities in BJ and Darius, I would argue that bringing in the big names doesn't ensure success either, as we don't know how they may or may not have gelled with the rest of the land of misfit toys. We just don't.

So, I am happy watching the progress, and not speculating on what could have been, because there's ALWAYS a way to speculate a better result than what you currently have, thinking that better result was just within reach, be it a winning record, a playoff appearance, getting to the SB or even actually winning it.

I'm here for it.

a drum with a strong beat on this board

over achieving is yet another drum beat I hear lately.

It’s natural as people have a need to explain what we are seeing.

Although your comments align with my current thinking, beating the Jets will only produce louder drumbeats.
