January 7, 2004 -- CLEVELAND - Stephon Marbury apologized yesterday for making remarks in September that Keith Van Horn would never make it in New York. Marbury, who played with Van Horn for the Nets during the 1999-2001 and 2000-01 seasons, vowed his reunion with the forward is "a fresh start."
"I think we will iron things out," Marbury said. "I think I was pretty much wrong for saying that. It was probably hasty. I think I reacted on the fact that Keith had just been through two different situations and then coming to New York and knowing how the fans and how the media was pretty much scrutinizing him when he was with New Jersey, I elaborated on that.
"I'm man enough to say that I was wrong for making the statement. And I will apologize to Keith for saying that. And I also feel that now is a fresh start and I think Keith knows as well as I know, he averaged 20 points when I played with him as opposed to his previous three years. And I don't think he's averaged 20 points since then."
Van Horn said, "We talked. We have a much better team than we had in Jersey and we just want to win."
Before Marbury's mea culpa, he was asked what he thought of the Knicks roster. He virtually mentioned every player except Van Horn - including Michael Doleac and Moochie Norris.
However, he made up for the oversight, complimenting Van Horn's play after last night's 107-96 loss to the Cavaliers, saying the forward has developed moves that weren't there in Jersey. "Playing with Keith is going to be a lot more fun," Marbury said. "Playing in New Jersey, I think we were both frustrated. We were in a losing situation, I was younger. I've matured so much from playing in New Jersey. He's matured."
