The more I see of Stewart the more he reminds me of O.J. who was a heckuv' a back. I think he ran for 190+ yards against the Cowboys in his 1st game. So, count me officially on the Stewart bandwagon. But if we do go CB in the 1st, then I'd go after (moving up if need be) Ray Rice. Can't wait till Sat. Wish I was there to share it with all of you but I'm in Giants' country (CT.) #$#$#@#$#$#@#$@#$@#@$#@#@#$@#$@@#$@#$ ....And that sums up my feelings on that!!! GO CARDS!!

He reminds me of a Ki-Jana Carter in the league half a year. All the talent and potential in the world with injuries that ruin it all.

Stout.............

Do you see any scenario (trade down, etc.) where the Cards might draft Dan Conner?

He reminds me of Coach Carter, who will give a rallying speech midway through the movie, only to immediately be eaten by Jeff the Shark.

C'mon your comparing him to someone who suffered an anterior cruciate ligimate injury in 95' and was never the same. That's a severe injury to come back from. Not comparable.

If Peterson goes down this year with shoulder issue, I suppose he'll be viewed as a bust, after the way he played last year?!

It broke my heart when we let Otis Anderson go to the Giants. What a RB, he had some great games in St. Louis.

OJ was 6-1 and his strength was that - when he could follow the blocking of Dierdorf, Dobler & Co. and get to the corner, he could dip his shoulder, turn the corner and blow on down the sideline with tackle breaking power and pretty good speed (He was fast enough to be a lights out kickoff returner in college).

Stewart is more of a bowling ball type (although a couple of inches taller than Newhouse was) who is best between the tackles and more of a tackle-breaker than a breakaway threat (not quite as fast as OJ when he first broke in).

I'd agree with the assessment. But he's definately not slow or plodding, by any means, I believe he'll be able to turn some corners himself.

IMO

Stewart will be one of the bigger busts of this draft.

He doesn't have the speed to hit the corner in the NFL.

He won't bowl people over in the NFL and he doesn't have the extra gear to get behind the D once he is through the initial hole.

Tack on his injury history and he scares the crap out of me.

If your assessment of Stewart (who incidently weighs 225 - 230 and runs in the mid4.4's) not being quick/fast enough to get to the corner or strong enough to break tackles - is correct:

How would you feel about drafting Kevin Smith (4.46) Matt Forte (4.46) with our #50 pick?

It's correct IYO. There are plenty of personell people (including ours) who would respectably disagree with that assessment.

Kevin Smith isn't that fast, at least not at the combine. Mendenhall ran what, a 4.42? Felix Jones who is supposed to be the fast outside burner ran a 4.44. Stewart with the pre-surgery toe (by all of 1 week) ran a 4.46 on it. He's got burst, if you say not, then I just don't think you saw him much. You don't run back kickoffs for a school like Oregon who has plenty of speed merchants without a burst. He breaks tackles and he's gone.

Very few RBs can get to the corner in the NFL. There are probably 3-4 backs in this draft that can get to the corner in the NFL. Chris Johnson and Jamaal Charles are two of the best at getting to the corner and have the best chance to do so in the NFL.

I don't believe there is much difference between Stewart and Smith/Forte. In fact I actually like Smith better than Stewart with running in-between the tackles. So I would much rather use the first rounder on another position and get an almost equivalent RB later in the draft.

I don't understand where Stewart comes in as slow. As stated earlier, he was Oregon's kick returner. Last year they were known as one of the quickest teams in college, and he was playing the position associated with being fast and shifty. He ran a good 40 at the combine on a bad toe that he had surgery to fix afterward.

The guy looks fast to me...

(Compared to Chris Johnson's highlights, everyone looks slow. But at 235, that's a heck of a time).

I never said he was slow. I just pointed out that he doesn't have the elite speed to get to the corner in the NFL. Therefore he is relegated to being a north south type of runner.

In the NFL holes close in a split second. What worked for Stewart in college will not work for him in the NFL. He doesn't have that elite explosiveness to shoot past defenders once he is through the hole and he really isn't that powerful of a runner. You won't see him knocking people on there asses in the NFL.

Madcard almost got it right when he said very few backs can get to the corner in the NFL. Almost.

It's not that many backs are not fast enough. Rather, the way defenses now play in the NFL, coupled with the speed of the OLBs and safeties, there is hardly ever a corner to turn.

To me, the stretch run blocking scheme came about in acknowledgment that turning the corner was an obsolete, unproductive way to run the football.

I can't remember the last time I saw a RB turn the corner and go for a long TD. Even the long Willie Parker TDs looked to be a result of a quick inside cut, after a horizontal start to the plays.

Terelle Davis ran like that. So too did Priest Holmes and LaDainian Tomlinson.

I'll concede that sometimes inside the 5 yard line or so, defenses do get sucked in to the middle and RBs do make the corner untouched. That may never change.
