Iowa State isn't exactly a small college, it's a division 1 school in a power conference. They may not be a powerhouse program but it isn't like he was playing at a FCS school. Lot's of college athletes no matter where they play get by on pure athletic ability and never pan out in the NFL for a variety of reasons. Butler is at a crossroads where either he uses this as motivation to change or he disappears from the football world, it's up to him because physically he is capable of playing in the NFL it is a question of how mentally strong he is and how much he wants it.

It's a college thats small enough to take a punt on a kid that barely played high school football purely because of his athletic profile.

I think you are missing the point. Iowa State is not a small school by any measure and like any school they have a limited amount of scholarships to offer. He didn't have to go to junior college first, he didn't go to a truly small school like Prairie View A&M. The potential was there, he is obviously physically gifted and that goes a long way for college athletes (especially at positions like WR) but to be successful in the NFL it goes a lot further than just physical ability.

Kingsbury recruited him at TT.

I'm not saying Iowa are Murray State.

But they are not Ohio, OU, Clemson, LSU etc either where the work ethic required to stand out and succeed are akin to the NFL.

Butler eventually succeeded (after most of 2 years not playing) to break through based on being a freak. At a school that doesn't traditionally supply the NFL with high draft picks.

It's Iowa State not Iowa, Cyclones not Hawkeyes, Big 12 versus Big 10. Players stand out at all those schools and fail at the NFL level too--it isn't about the school but about the individual.

Going after Earl Thomas on a 1 year deal would be the biggest "win now" move we could do at this point. I know he has baggage, but sometimes the "shut up and build up your value" type one year deal could work. I also wouldn't mind someone like Snacks Harrison to stuff the run...but I think they like Fetu and Lawrence enough to roll with them.

Every player ever drafted after the first round was graded higher and was a gigantic steal.
While it is said more often than probably true, it also isn't uncommon for players to get drafted right around where they were expected. In some cases they were drafted higher than expected (Williams and Isabella for instance).

So seems Hakeem Butler does suck. No PS invites. Jet's worked him out and didn't sign him and the Jets have Moncrief on their PS. When you can't knock off Moncrief you suuuuck.

If he had any gumption he'd go away, work his nuts off and come back for camp next year looking elite. He has the ability to, sadly I don't think he has the work rate too.

Sad to see someone waste their talent like that.

While I can only name Johnny Manzell (Sp?), there are hundreds of guys who were good in college, but not in the NFL. Many of us assume that Hakeem Butler didn't make it because he didn't work hard enough. But it could be a question of talent. For me, I have no idea.
