Hell, my local Walmarts had no Bluray/HDDVDs anyway.

I have to admit, blu ray really stepped in and delivered a severe knock out blow. To think these two formats were neck and neck a few months back is astonishing.

I agree. The best thing that they did, was offer A TON of sales on Bluray software from Oct to Dec. I only bought a half a dozen or so, but I know people who bought dozens of titles because they were B1G1 free at $19.99. Spending $10 for HD titles was cheaper than buying the DVD counterpart.

HDDVD tried this too little too late.

Not me. I am sure that I could sell most of my titles for a PROFIT from what I paid for them, because I buy my movies so cheap, yet I refuse to do so.

If you want to sell your titles for 50c on the dollar, hit me up. I will buy them.

If you wait too long, that's exactly what will happen. Laserdisc stayed around for a year or two after DVD was introduced, but now it's increasingly difficult to find anyone who wants them, let alone will pay for them.

Toshiba officially throws in the towel:

Toshiba to exit HD DVD, end format war-NHK

TOKYO (Reuters) - Toshiba Corp is planning to stop production of equipment compatible with the HD DVD format for high-definition video, allowing the competing Blu-Ray camp a free run, public broadcaster NHK reported on Saturday.

Toshiba is expected to suffer losses amounting to tens of billions of yen (hundreds of millions of dollars) to scrap production of HD DVD players and recorders and other steps to exit the business, Japan's NHK said on its website.

No one at Toshiba could be reached for comment.

The format war between the Toshiba-backed HD DVD and Sony Corp's Blu-Ray, often compared to the Betamax-VHS battle in the 1980s, has slowed the development of what is expected to be a multibillion dollar high-definition DVD industry.

Toshiba was dealt a blow on Friday when Wal-Mart Stores Inc said it would abandon the HD DVD format, becoming the latest in a series of top retailers and movie studios to rally behind Blu-ray technology for high definition DVDs.

Toshiba plans to continue selling HD DVD equipment at stores for the time being but will not put resources into developing new devices, NHK said.

I am glad I waited and did not buy a HD DVD player and movies. Now I will invest in Blu-Ray. By the way, when do you guys think we will see a Blu-Ray dvd recorder?

Wal Mart has tossed its hat in the ring behind HD DVD. That's all you really need to know. Wal Mart is not in the business of losing; they make you conform to their will. Ask Vlasic.

Wal Mart should run for office, they already have flip flopping down.

Soooo.... How long for HDDVD leaning movie studio's to move to bluray? I have held off buying either and now want things like the Bourne Collection (and others) moved into mass production on Blu-Ray.

Any ideas???

I will probably hold off buying a blu-ray player until there is a price drop. Now that they hold the whole market in the palm of their hands.... It might be a while.

Gizmodo.com was guessing most HD DVD releases will see Blu Ray release in the next 12 months.

Sony, Toshiba sign chip deal

TOKYO - Toshiba Corp. and Sony Corp. announced Wednesday that they have signed an agreement to form a joint venture to start making advanced chips in April.

Toshiba is paying 90 billion yen ($835 million) for Sony's high-performance semiconductor operations under the accord that was first announced last October.

The two companies said they had stepped up the deal to form a semiconductor joint venture owned 60 percent by Toshiba, with 40 percent equally split by Sony and its game unit Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.

The signing of the agreement comes a day after Toshiba said it would quit its HD DVD business, handing Sony's Blu-ray disc technology the victory in the battle to establish an industry standard for high-definition video. Toshiba said Tuesday it would ramp up its chip operations rapidly, an apparent bid to soften the impact of that loss.

Toshiba is buying Sony's wafer production lines for advanced "Cell" microprocessors in the southern prefecture of Nagasaki to establish the venture. The chips are used in Sony's PlayStation game consoles as well as in Toshiba's digital consumer goods.

Toshiba and Sony said they plan to complete the transaction by the end of March and Toshiba will then lease the facilities to the joint venture, which will start operating April 1.

Sony announced in October a basic agreement to sell the chip facilities to Toshiba as part of an effort to streamline its operations.

Toshiba said it will instead step up investment in new NAND-type flash memory plants in Japan together with U.S. partner SanDisc Corp.

I don't see them rereleasing all of the titles over to Bluray. Only the best sellers will come over. They will focus on new releases than focusing on back titles. I am sure that you will see Transformers on Bluray for example, but probably not Darkman.

Man, I bought this on release day, and still haven't found the time to watch it.

I wish there were more hours in the day.

Shorter format war than I thought it would be. Hey, old guys (hehe) how long did the Betamax/VHS conflict go on?
