Tempe, AZ – The Arizona Cardinals Football Club today announced the hiring of RICHIE ANDERSON as tight ends coach and MAURICE CARTHON as running backs coach.

"I have great respect for each of these coaches and from working with them in the past, I know they will bring a lot to our staff," said Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt.

Anderson comes to the Cardinals after spending the 2006 season as the assistant wide receivers/tight ends coach for the New York Jets. A veteran of 13 seasons in the NFL as a fullback with the New York Jets (1993-2002) and Dallas Cowboys (2003-05), Anderson began his coaching career last season with the Jets. A native of Silver Spring, MD, Anderson played in 161 games (82 starts) with 318 carries for 1,274 yards and four touchdowns while also catching 400 passes for 3,149 yards and 14 touchdowns during in his NFL career. A 2000 Pro Bowl selection with New York, Anderson holds the Jets team record for most receptions by a running back with 305.

Carthon spent the last two seasons as the offensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns and has 14 total years of experience as an NFL assistant and eight as an NFL player. His coaching career began as an offensive assistant under Bill Parcells with New England in 1994 where he coached through 1996 helping with the running backs and on special teams. He then coached running backs with the New York Jets (1997-2000) before joining the Detroit Lions staff, first as running backs coach (2000) and then offensive coordinator (2001). Carthon then moved to Dallas as offensive coordinator/running backs (2003-04) before accepting the position of offensive coordinator with Cleveland in 2005. The Chicago, IL, native began his NFL playing career with the New York Giants as a fullback in 1985 and played seven seasons in New York (1985-1991) before finishing his career in Indianapolis (1992). A two-time Super Bowl winner (both as a player), Carthon never missed a game due to injury in his career collecting 950 rushing yards and two touchdowns in 300 attempts while grabbing 90 passes for 745 yards and two touchdowns.

Today’s hirings bring the number of assistants on Whisenhunt’s coaching staff to nine. Anderson and Carthon join offensive coordinator Todd Haley, defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast, assistant head coach/offensive line Russ Grimm, defensive backs coach Teryl Austin, linebackers coach Billy Davis, strength and conditioning coach John Lott, and special teams coach Kevin Spencer.

Its good to have coaches that you know and have worked with in the past. They will be on the same page very quickly.

Interesting that a career RB is now an NFL TE coach

I think it was "NFL Football" (circa 1988) for the original Nintendo that introduced me to Carthon. That was the first game that showed the players faces in the line-up screen and made use of (the now common) turbo and degrading energy. Carthon was a monster in that game (far exceeding his real-life stats) as the 1-2 punch with Dave Megget. Anybody got a "ROM" copy????

Shane:

It's not that puzzling. In today's game, most fullbacks--like tight ends--are primarily blockers and receivers. If Richie Anderson can teach the Cardinals' TEs to do both as well as he did, he'll be a great addition to the Cards coaching staff.

Maybe. But from what I rememebr of ritchie anderson is that he wasnt a big bruising/blocking FB. He was more of a 3rd down pass catching back almost like Larry Centers only not quite that level of production. We shall see.

What's with all the former Jets players/asst coaches?? I didn't realize Whiz had been with the Jets that long to cement all those relationships.

Looks like lots of 'cronism' IMO...

you are right...and if you look at the "connections" of head coaches with their assistants and coordinators...MORE OFTEN than not..but not always there is a lot of that...and it only makes sense....the key is to have "capable cronies" sometimes (ahem) head coaches don't have them if you catch my drift. i would like to think the quality of the guys that kw has put together is top drawer.

Croonies is not a bad thing. Look at Parcells with Belichick. They were together with the Giants,Patriots and Jets. As long as they can coach the talent of this team I could care less.

Maybe he played some TE as well as fullback.
As a FB, Anderson set the Jets team record for receptions by a RB.

While cronyism can be a bad thing, hiring on merit based on personal experience can be a good thing.

I remember Don Coryell once saying that when making personnel decisions, he'd rather hire the player (and I guess also the coach) he had personal experience with.

It's funny how memories go...Maurice Carthon will always be etched in my mind as Herschel Walker's backfield mate with the New Jersey Generals...with Doug Flutie at QB.

Thanks. I forgot about that. Did you think the generals' helmet was sort of bland by USFL standards?

I think he was born in Chicago but he grew up in Osceola, Arkansas, graduated from Arkansas State, and then went to the Giants. We Arkie's gotta stick together.:)

crooner, n., one who sings or hums in a low, soothing, evenly modulated voice.
