The post season is still going but time to start looking at what needs to be done to build on this season's surprise success.

What I would do:
1. Trade Zack Greinke - His post season numbers proved he is not worth paying over $30M a year going forward. Yes he won 17 games but when the games really counted he folded like an accordion. A big money team may be willing to take him on thinking he can have a Justin Verlander effect on their team. Theoretically, ARZ has 5 SP's they go with if they deal Greinke (Ray, Corbin, Godley, Walker & Bradley), of course they would have to improve the bull pen to fill Bradley's spot but relievers are usually cheaper than SP's. ARZ needs to start scouting SP's better in the draft to start building up the farm.

2. Sign a LF - ARZ would love to re-sign Martinez but if they cannot deal Greinke or Martinez demands come to rich, ARZ needs to find a replacement. A guy who could possibly be had on a reasonable deal is Carlos Gonzalez (former D'Back prospect). He had a down year compared to his career averages and turns 32 next month or a guy like Jay Bruce would provide some pop to the lineup. Would love to have him if Martinez bolts.

3. Solve 3B Question - Is Lamb the everyday 3B? His season power numbers were great, his BA really dropped the second half of the season as LHP was his Achilles heel. He had a good post season hitting wise (no HR's or RBI's) batting over .460 in 13 AB's. He's only 27 and its not impossible that with work over the offseason he can learn to hit LHP. Brandon Drury could back him up in a platoon but if ARZ is looking for a permanent solution and are willing to pay (if Martinez & Greinke depart) they could go after Mike Moustakas who is a FA but will command big $$$ even though he is approaching 30 years old.

4. Sign SP or Closer - If Greinke is dealt, the decision on what to do with Bradley will determine the route. Bradley has made it known he wants to start so if ARZ accommodates him they need to replace Rodney as he is a FA. There are a lot of closers that are going to be in the market (Greg Holland, Wade Davis, Francisco Rodriguez) or they can look for SP's or look at the trade market. If you can get a Chris Archer you do it even if you have to gut the farm.

5. Determine Pollock's Future - Pay him or move on. Guy is made of glass so if they feel the risk is to great to take to sign him to a huge deal then deal him now and look for a FA replacement or maybe Anfernee Grier (top OF prospect) will be ready to replace him.

6. Foist Tomas - Find a AL team desperate for a DH willing to just pay his salary, no prospects required in return.

Ppl keep saying trade Greinke because he's not an ace but think another team will pay him 30 mil a year b/c he is an ace? Make up your mind.

He was an ace for us in the regular season. But a disappointment in the post-season. There are always teams who believe they could get the best out of him next season.

And we have Robbie Ray, who is ready to step up to ace. If we didn't, then we'd be one of those teams who believe we could get the best out of him next season.

We've been over this again and again. You say Greinke has worn out his welcome yet think some team sees him the opposite way you do. The Diamondbacks had to overpay by 30 mil to sign him and that's when he was two years younger coming off his best season. How in the world is his value higher than it was in 2015?

Zach Greinke can't be moved so all this time we keep replying to eachother is a waste of time. So I'm tapping out.

I think Hazen will trade Tomas to the AL if it means eating all but 10-12 mil. Pollock for a quality BP arm and prospect. So say those two moves save around 20 mil. Hire Steve Finley to work with Chris Owings in CF.

Re-sign JD at 6/125.

Look at Verlander, he was not an ace this year in DET but he is arguably the best pitcher in the HOU rotation, in fact they look like they can take it all. No way HOU makes it this far without Verlander but earlier this year he was an overpaid back of the end SP whom DET was desperate to get out of his contract. ARZ may have to send some $$$ in the deal unless they are willing to take a lesser prospect package in return. Verlander is a year older than Greinke and is not making as much as Greinke but at $28M the next couple of years that is not exactly chump change. Point is Greinke on the right team (a high powered offensive team) and a pitcher's ball park could put up better numbers than he did here in ARZ.

Houston owes Verlander 40 mil. The Diamondbacks owe Greinke 140 mil and Verlander has always been considered the better ace and postseason performer. I get the age comparison but there's not much there besides that.

We'll see if there's less pressure on Zach going forward if Ray is named Ace of the staff.

JD is gonna cost more than that, I bet on 130/5.

What's lorenzo cain's price tag going to be?

Kevin Kiermaier would be a dream trade target

$26 mil over 5 years for JD? He's not going to play up to that. I love Kiermaier, but he is a tad injury prone.

Tap out. I'll give you long term money but take away this year and Greinke has better post season numbers than Verlander. LA was interested last year and CHI was interested as well, it will have to be a big market team and if ARZ included money, someone could become interested. He isn't untradeable.

I'd rather let JD walk than sign him to a monster deal. Almost no chance he will live up to the money and we're already handicapped by Greinke. Tomas is not a bad DH for the right team. He is overpaid but not extraordinarily so, and thus movable. I'd like to keep Pollock on a reasonable deal if possible. Not convinced we are a contender even if we keep everyone, though.

Greinke got tired towards the end of the year. Last 3 real starts were bad. Dbacks need a better bullpen, and TL needs to not grind his starters down.

How true. In today's MLB world, every starting pitcher needs to be treated based upon his capabilities.

Announcing that he wants 21 outs from all starters all games might be described as lazy management.

I wonder where his pitching coach stood on this and if Torey delegates authority.

Martinez couldn't have picked a worse agent if he wanted to stay. Boras says differently.

Maybe if there is a taker for Tomas?

Looks like we will be seeing him 9 games a year at Chase Field, where puke blue

My money would be on the Giants if he stays in the West. The Red Sox however could be in on paying him a ridiculous amount to play left field.

An AL team has the ability to offer more years because they can slide him to DH when he defense becomes a hinderance to his value as a player at the end of his contract.

As an NL team, I wouldn't go past 3 years.

I think it's worth pointing out that with CHC in 2016 and HOU in 2017, this is the second year a complete rebuild team has won the WS.

Fans here (along with the FOs and ownership) have fought this strategy for over 10 years preferring to remain middling with the occasional playoff blip.

I called for a complete rebuild this past off-season and got ripped this season for such thoughts, but I still wonder what more we can expect from the team as constructed above the 2017 NLDS sweep.
