South Carolina starter Jake McCoy surrendered three hits in 6 1/3 innings of work against No. 11 Ole Miss Friday afternoon, and the Gamecocks clinched their first SEC series of the season with a 7-2 win over the Rebels at Founders Park.
Ole Miss (27-12, 9-8 SEC) has lost four-straight games and its last two SEC series.
Senior Riley Maddox pitched 2 1/3 innings for the Rebels and allowed three earned runs. He struck out three batters, walked three and made three wild pitches.
Rebels freshman designated hitter Hayden Federico led the game off with a home run to deep left field on a full count. The Gamecocks (23-17, 4-13) scored three runs with two outs in the bottom of the inning, however, on an RBI single from Jase Woita, a wild pitch from Maddox and an error from junior first baseman Collin Reuter. Nathan Hall and Blake Jackson hit solo home runs for the Gamecocks in the second and sixth innings, respectively.
The first two batters of the seventh inning reached for the Rebels, eventually bringing sophomore catcher Austin Fawley to the plate with runners on the corners. Fawley hit into a double play to end the inning. The Rebels got a pair of runners on base with two outs in the eighth, and junior second baseman Judd Utermark drove Federico in from second with a line-drive single to left. Ole Miss went 1 for 10 with runners on base in the game.
The Gamecocks added insurance in the eighth with a two-run single from Hall. Hall finished the game 2 for 3 with three RBIs.
Ole Miss and South Carolina wrap up their series Saturday at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast on SEC Network+.
