It doesnt mtter how long the bonus is split up. If its 6.3 million this year then every dime of that is on the salary cap.

I wanna know where the scratch is gonna come from to sign 5 more good ones.

No no no... let's say he signs for a 5 mil bonus and 1.3 this season in salary. He earned 6.3, but his NFL salary to the cap is his base of 1.3 and a pro-rated portion of his bonus.

he gets all 6.3 this year, but the nfl splits bonus between the years.

Here's what the article says:

Between the signing bonus and base salary, he will earn $6.3 million in 2005.

All right? It does not say it's all guaranteed salary, which is the only way we'd take all 6.3 mil on the cap this year. This is completely a standard Cardinals contract that we've seen over and over the last few years. Straight up on the base salaries across the board.

Sheesh!! I'm surprised joeshmo dropped the ball on the cap analysis. But, I swear, some of you guys just seem to be digging up reasons to bitch and worry. We sign somebody at a price that is very typical of a RT, and people are worried we paid too much. :hulk:

There is no way the Cards structured his deal so his 2005 cap hit is $6.3M. If the Cards were doing that, they might just as well take out a newspaper ad saying "We are purposely trying to lose."

Unless the Cards actually backloaded his contract, which I doubt, his 2005 cap hit is $3.5M.

Signing Bonus of $3.5 spread out over 5 years is $700K per year, salary of $2.8M per year.

If you add his bonus and his 2005 salary, you get the $6.3M figure he will collect this year. It just doesn't all count against the cap.

Sounds like a reasonable contract for both teams. Good move Cardinals.

I thought it was common knowledge that the signing bonus hit is spread along the length of the contract.

OT Ross leaves Steelers for 5-year deal

Kent Somers

Mar. 5, 2005 12:00 AM

The Cardinals bolstered their offensive line Friday, signing Pittsburgh tackle Oliver Ross to a 5-year, $17.5 million contract.

Ross will make $6.3 million in the first year in signing bonus and salary. He's the Cardinals' first signing in free agency, and he fills a critical need.

Ross will play right tackle, a position that was problematic last season. Oliver played in every game over the past four years with the Steelers, and has experience at guard and tackle. He played right tackle last season for the Steelers.

The 6-foot-5, 322-pound Olivervisited the team Thursday and said he was eager to sign with a team. He had no qualms about leaving the Steelers, one of the league's most successful franchises, for the Cardinals, one of the worst.

"I think there are going to be trials and tribulations anywhere," he said. "In Pittsburgh, the year before we were 6-10, but the year before that we played in the (AFC) championship."

Ross, 30, played at Iowa State and was drafted by the Cowboys in the fifth round in 1998.

Mixed signal calling

Kurt Warner, possibly the team's next starting quarterback, has something in common with Josh McCown, who currently holds the job: the same agency.

That prompts speculation that Priority Sports might not be so eager to have one client, Warner, replace another, McCown.

Not so, said Mark Bartelstein, who represents Warner. Bartelstein's colleague, Mike McCartney, represents McCown.

"It's something you think about, but that's the nature of the business," Bartelstein said. "We think Josh will be a really good quarterback in this league. And Josh's feeling is if the Cardinals are going to bring in a veteran guy, he would just as soon it be Kurt. There's no one better in the league to learn from."

The Cardinals also are interested in Brad Johnson..

Return trip

Defensive end Chike Okeafor will be traveling familiar ground today when he visits the Cardinals. He made a similar free-agent visit two years ago before signing with Seattle.

Back then, Cardinals doctors had concerns about his neck condition, and the team passed on signing him.

In two years in Seattle, Okeafor didn't miss a game and had 16 1/2 sacks. He visited Denver earlier this week.

"We're holding off on further trips to see where Denver and Arizona come in," said his agent, Andrew Simms.

Baltimore middle linebacker Edgerton Hartwell also is visiting today. His leverage increased a bit the past few days with the deals signed by other middle linebackers.

Safety first

Two safeties, Steve Gleason and Robert Griffith, visited Friday.

Gleason, who played the past four years in New Orleans, has been working out at Athletes' Performance in Tempe. He's a special-teams standout who doesn't play much on defense.

"They called my agent. He said, 'Well, it's a cheap trip for you guys. He's got his own transportation,' " Gleason said.

His salary cap hit is $3.5M ($17.5M/5 = $3.5M/year). Signing bonuses are spread evenly across the duration of the contract.

Obviously, Ross' contract is front loaded with the signing bonus.

By my calculations, his contract would be $3.5M signing bonus and base of $2.8 over 5 years. That would give you the $6.3 in 2005 and $17.5 over 5 years.

Just to put it into perspective, both Shelton and Clement have a cap hit of $3.0M. It's fine to replace these guys, but the Cards must realize that new talent will be more "expensive" than the guys already in the house.

Starks is another example. I think it may be hard to sign a decent FA CB for less money than what Starks was making. The benefit, though, would be that the new player will not be injured and will buy into Green's system.

Regarding how you evaluate offensive linemen - One fairly simplistic (but effective) way is to look at how effective the entire offensive line did (i.e. rushing yards) and how effective the entire offensive line did protecting the passer (i.e. # of sacks).

Seems to me the Steelers did right good in both departments last year. This alone makes me feel good about the signing of Ross.

A friend who is an avid Steelers fan bemoaned the loss saying that while its a loss of talent what really will be missed is his attitude. And that can only be a good thing for our O line.

Does anyone here know anything, anything, about Oliver Ross?
I know I don't.

I do not but am just glad we signed someone. If he started all games for Pittsburg last year then he must be decent. If he wanted to L.J. could probably start at RG for 16 games for many teams in the league. He appears to be history so I will let that be and welcome a new OL. Now go sign a QB and a DB. We have now moved up from a grade F in the draft to a grade D. We will lose LJ and gain Ross. Got to replace Starks and it is very difficult for a rookie to make an impact at DB.

For what it's worth, there's a Steelers fan here at work that was very upset about them losing Ross. Says he's a mauler, says he doesn't know if their OL can take losing both Ross and Vincent. I like to hear that.

I love this signing, everybody was crying now Green added a guy to one of the Cards biggest weakness. Steelers had a dominating Rushing game, in a very tough conference!!! This kicks ass!!! Now the Cards really should land Vincent and have a very good right side of the line. Warner and Vincent are on my wish list big time now!! I love what Green di sat back, let teams blow money on over rated guys and land a solid starter. Great move Coach Green.
