I'd rather draft Cam Newton than Colin Kapernick.

If the Cards are going to draft a QB this year it needs to be Newton. They need the publicity. It would immediately improve ticket sales and get back the recognition earned with back to back NFC West titles lost in last seasons disaster. The Cards are on the verge of fading back into the dark shadows of professional sports where they dwelt since the departure of Coryell until the resurgence of Kurt Warner. They need Cam Newton.

Remember, the NFL is a business. The owners are in it to make money. Actually winning games is secondary.

In an article last week the publication NFL Weekly really came down on Newton very hard. It has created a lot of talk on the talk shows. One even compared him to Leinart in that he may not have the work ethic to become all that he can. They made him a high risk pick even though they said he had the size, body, arm strength and all the tangibles. Newton's adviser Warren Moon has labeled the writer as a racist so this has created even further writings and comments. The original article actually was enough to scare me off of Newton as he publication is a well respected publication and its writers are normally well informed. My first pick was and still is Gabbert but I recognize the Cards will not likely take a QB with their first pick. If that happens my plan B is to draft our Arkansas QB who all the gurus say clearly has the best arm in the draft. I think he may be gone in the lower end of the 1st round but he also may not. My backup plan B is to take the best player available in the area of need.

There certainly is enough information out there to make any team take a second look at Newton before making him there #1 pick in the draft. You can help a QB with mechanics, etc. You cannot help him with the mindset and effort it takes to be a good NFL QB. Matt was more into being a playboy early on when he should have been doing all the things he needed to do be the starting QB. He was not putting out a good effort in the practices and that will never earn you any points with any head coach. Particularly when you are the new high profile first pick for a team. I doubt we had one member of this board who did not thing we had a steal and had our QBOTF. Sometimes you do not pay attention to something that is right in front of you. We read his football press and we also read about his Hollywood playboy connections. I did wonder why so many teams passed on what most people thought might even be the #1 pick in the draft? Our experience with Matt makes me gun shy about Newton. Remember this guy has played only one season of Division 1 football and that was largely out of a non NFL type of formation. He can talk the talk and he has the body, arm, and is a formidable runner. It is what is in his head and whether he has the work ethic to become a quality NFL QB that is now scaring me.

If the Cardinals draft this guy it will be for name regognition. Which may be enought for this FO. We'll see.....he seems pretty imature and has an inflated ego.

Don't know how he'd handle, very difficult circumstances which he might enter into here. Or if he struggles greatly, how he'll respond.

With that said Kaepernick, Ponder or even possibly Mallet in the 2nd looks much less risky, and may work out better in the long run. I like that Kaepernick has 4 yrs. under his belt and Ponder also.

I don't buy any of that stuff about Leinart. Especially since the coach that released him hasn't shown any indication he knows anything about QBs. Brian St.Pierre? DeWreck Anderson? Max Hall? (The QBs that CKW has brought to Arizona combined last season for a 57.3 QB rating completing only 50.5% of their passes.)

Leinart simply got blown aside by the whirlwind that was Kurt Warner from November of 2007 to January of 2009.

In a November 26 game, ML set an NFL rookie record with 405 passing yards
Obviously the guy could play in the NFL.

As for Newton he doesn't have to win any games for the Cards all he needs to do is, like Leinart, generate interest in Cardinal football.

Newton

I know newton has one division 1 season. But what did he accomplish in that season? He took auburn who wasn't even in the talks undefeated in the toughest conference in college football being the sec. And to go on and win both the sec and the national championships. Being a gator fan and following the sec, I saw him literraly win games by himself. They wouldn't have won half the games if not for Newton. There was a reason people bid on him. Will that translate to NFL? I think it will. Do I think we go QB first? I don't think so. But I know it would be exciting to see what he can do. I think he has the moxy to be a great salesman of the game. Me I would have liked Tebow last year but missed him by one pick. Just watch auburn too next year without newton. Not so good I don't think. Again I think we go defense to help our new coordinator. But wouldn't frown upon Newton at all.

I Have Kaepernick rated #5 (behind Newton, Gabbert, Mallett and Dalton.

He's got a lot of developmental upside and he's very mobile (I have a soft spot in my heart for QB's who can escape pressure).

The PFW stuff appears to be one guy's (Nawrocki's) take on Newton based more on hearsay (& comments from guys Nawrocki can trust) than anything more factual. Concensus among the NFL Network guys is that most if not all teams will do their own homework/due diligence and not rely on what one guy says to frame their decision on Newton.

Regarding Leinart - I wouldn't cast blame all over the place like bird-seed.

All we really know is that a guy - many people (including the Cardinals) felt had potential worthy of a top ten grade - didn't deliver. We don't know whose fault it was - the evaluators, coaching or Leinart himself.

All we really know is that we did what we did and it didn't turn out so well (which, in turn, translates into the issue of whether our evaluators and key assistant coaches can and will learn from the experience or whether they'd be doomed to make the same mistakes with future top-rated QB prospects).

Finally, until we make any moves at QB, our center of attention has to be on Skelton and Bartels - will they have developed enough that we could trust them to win consistently? How we feel about these guys may, in turn, govern what we do in the draft and free agency.
