Thomas fits that X prototype more than Nabers does(they both do). I still don’t know why Thomas needs to prove it another year for you, but not Nabers. He outperformed Nabers. If they switched draft spots, would you still say this?

I dunno. I’m not really gonna pound the table to keep Thomas out if you want to.

I think if you switch Nabers and Thomas Nabers is more productive and Thomas looks a lot like MHJ. Just a guess tho.

Nabers was seen as the better prospect and his talent translated right away. BTJ’s rookie success was more of a surprise but not a shock. I was so adamant against trading down and won’t make that mistake again. There’s no sure thing.

I get what you are saying but I still don't believe MHJ was a bad pick.

Monti can't control injuries man. He's played 3 full seasons in a row, GM's don't have crystal balls.

If he had a long list of injuries and missed time then sure, but he doesn't.

I don't care if he can control injuries or not. The guy wasn't good this season. The reason is irrelevant because he does not support your point.

Shifting focus back on melton - why was he considered to have such a bad season this year? I caught every game except one- from what I saw he got picked on a couple times, but never seemed worse than SMB who got smoked sometimes blatantly this year. I am actually more optimistic on the kid - I could see him undergoing significant improvement under JG in year two.

TBH-call it an excuse but I think it’s borderline unfair to judge any secondary too harshly with this patchwork mediocre front 7 that has trouble generating pressure

A little bit of Melton's problem is he's playing next to an equally young superstar in GWill.

But like that long pass play vs. SF early in the game. Where Dobbs throws up kind of a prayer to Purcivell (sp). Melton doesn't even turn to look for the ball, just keeps running by the receiver out of the play.

I mean I'm no defensive backs coach or anything, but when I watch Melton play, he seems to be struggling. He played a lot of snaps this year, but zero INTs. Could not beat out UDFA S. Thomas V for the starting job.

Agreed. This is it for me. Melton is very toolsy. If he can convert the natural tools he possesses into production he could fantastic. The issue is, that’s a big unknown. And the trade down took them out of contention for a more highly considered player at the same position (cooper dejean) who, by most accounts, performed well as a rookie. And it hasn’t helped that Lassiter also seemingly outperformed melton this year and was also available. And we definitely had posters clamoring for both kids over melton.

Should positively impact entire defense. But I’m unsure if it just makes the completions against go down or if these players can convert a sped up QB into takeaways. That tends to be special skill of top end DBs.

One thing for sure is that Melton won’t have to worry about covering for 4+ seconds. You mentioned Cooper & Kamari. Good players individually, but their margin for error is much wider when you have Anderson/Hunter & Carter/Nolan/Milton in front of you applying pressure compared to really just Baron Browning.

And pressure is the key word for me. Sacks get the headlines, but pressure disrupts the timing of progression reads, forces QBs to move while maintaining good throwing fundamentals, and creates stress, disrupts focus. It's like kicking. Most of these dudes can drill FGs from 70 yards with a stand and no line in front of them. the moment you put a line in front and have dudes rushing, kicking becomes much more difficult.
