Raiders waive sixth-round pick
Posted by Mike Florio on July 13, 2009 4:53 PM
The Oakland Raiders have found a new way to avoid holdouts by rookie draft picks.

The solution? Cut them.

A league source tells us that the Raiders have waived defensive end Stryker Sulak, a sixth-round pick in the 2009 draft.

The formal designation was "waived/unsigned."

So, basically, the Raiders have cut Sulak before his rookie training camp. Said the source, "I've never seen that happen before."

But the tactic is permitted. Teams are required only to tender one-year contracts for the rookie minimum to their draft picks. Even if the draft pick were to sign the one-year tender, the team would still have the ability to terminate the non-guaranteed deal.

Sulak was the 26th player picked in round six, and the 199th overall in the draft. The Raiders selected Sulak with a draft pick obtained from the Patriots.

The reason for the Raiders' decision to cut Sulak isn't known. Yet.

Cutting a draft pick before training camp has even started??? WTF???

How much money do 6th round draft picks get as opposed to the undrafted rookie free agents? Maybe the Raiders were thinking this move will end up costing him as far as what kind of deal he will get now.

Even if he gets slightly less then the going rate for a 6th rd pick, he gets the bonus of not having to play for the Raiders.

Buddy Ryan of the Cardinals did that once --- but I guess that only furthers the point rather than disputing it

let me be the first to say : Bring him in

whenever the Raiders waive a drafted rookie defensive end, it works out well

that Quentin Moses guy is great

Stryker Sulak was actually a decent sounding DE/OLB prospect before the draft. I'd take him in a heart beat over someone like Chase Bullock or almost any other UDFA we got this year. I hope the Cardinals jump on him quick, fast and in a hurry.

Here's what I said about him before the draft:
Sulak's an accomplished player with four years of starting experience and he even thought about going pro after this junior. He's improved each year as at Missouri but most scouts still slap the overachiever label on him and wonder if he'll have the ability to hold his own in space. He's dealt with some injuries during his four seasons but in 53 games he's still managed 38 tackles for loss and 22.5 sacks, including 15.5 & 10.5 respectively his senior year. Projected Round: 7th
Pros - Sulak's a decent athlete with slightly above average speed and quickness but he makes a difference with his non-stop motor and burst to close on the ball carrier. He's got good instincts and awareness and is a hard worker.
Cons - Sulak's not going to blow anyone away with his athletic ability and he'll have to get stronger to maintain the point of attack. He hasn't been asked to drop into coverage very often but he looks uncomfortable and stiff in space.

Before? Did you say before? :D

It's sad, because he once was among the best minds in the game!

Except his mind never changed with the times.

However, I don't want it to end. The Raiders are the greatest sideshow in the NFL!

I would be on the phone right now giving him a call. He is 100 better then the 2 UDFA that we picked uped.

Stryker Sulak (DE)
Height: 6'5"
Weight: 251
College: Missouri
Conference: Big 12
Hometown: Rockdale, TX
High School: Rockdale
View Combine Page >>

Combine Results:
40 Yard Dash : 4.77 seconds
Bench Press : 22.0 reps
Vertical Jump : 31.0 inches
Broad Jump : 113.0 inches
3 Cone Drill : 7.31 seconds
20 Yard Shuttle : 4.58 seconds

Pick Analysis: Sulak had a lot of sacks in college and has a lot of speed. He is a hybrid-type player who lacks the size to play with his hand down full-time. He is a value pick and in the Raiders' 3-4 scheme, he will probably play strong-side linebacker.

Overview A three-time All-Big 12 honoree, Sulak has the production and burst upfield to generate interest from every NFL team. He shared freshman of the year honors with tight end Chase Coffman of the Tigers, starting the final seven games of that season for Missouri and finishing with 38 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss and four sacks. Sulak's production increased as he gained experience, topping out with eye-popping numbers as a senior -- 55 tackles, 15.5 tackles for loss, 10.5 sacks and an NCAA-leading six forced fumbles. With opposing offenses focusing much of their attention upon Missouri's other defenders, Sulak's production was inflated. Without the bulk to remain at defensive end full time in the NFL, he'll have to show he has the athleticism to make the transition to linebacker to avoid the "tweener" label.

Number: 38
Position: DE
Draft Year: 09
Year: 5Sr HeightWeightRound40RankO Rank 6-4.5 251 4-5 4.69 0

Bio
Full-time starter the past two seasons after seeing sporadic playing time with the first team as a freshman and sophomore. Totals last season included 55/15.5/10.5 after 60/11/6 as a junior. All-Conference selection the past two seasons.

Positives
Athletic defensive front seven prospect with ability as a defensive end or rush linebacker. Plays with good lean, effectively uses his hands to protect himself, and rarely off his feet. Quickly gets off the snap with a nice first step, good speed off the edge, and can bend or pursue from the back side. Physical, likes to mix it up, and finds a way to be a disruptive force. Strings plays out laterally.

Negatives
Controlled at the point of attack by single blocker. Lacks the natural bulk to be a defensive end, and may struggle against the run.

Analysis
Sulak is a disciplined defender who plays with an aggressive attitude. Best up the field, he has definite possibilities standing up over right tackle in a 3-4 alignment, and he could develop into a starter at the next level if he displays the ability to play in pass coverage.

Does anyone know if he becomes an immediate 'free agent' or if he has to go through waivers (which would mean we're 31st in line, right?)?

Well there's probably no way that he makes it that far then. Surely another team trying to make the switch to a 3-4, like the Broncos or Packers, would take a flier on him.

I wanted the Cards to draft him. But...if a guy has a problem so bad that the Raiders cut him you have to wonder.

Or maybe the Raiders looked at Sulak's background and couldn't find any priors so they let him go.

Interesting... as of this moment, the NFL Transaction Report shows that the Raiders cut Sulak on the 13th, and nobody claimed him on the 14th. It does show some transactions already for today, the 15th. If the online report is accurate and up to date, then shouldn't Sulak be a free agent right now?

Dont trust those reports. It may have been reported on that day but it doesnt count until the paper work goes through the league offices and is excepted.

Interesting... i thought something like that might be the case, and i figured you'd know! :) There are now reports on the NFL Transactions page from the 14th through 16th. Sulak was waived on the 13th.

Does that mean that he has to be claimed by COB on the 14th, or does he get one "full" day on waivers, giving teams until COB on the 15th?

Either way, any guesses as to how long it might take for a report to show up on NFL.com? Unless there's potential for a fairly lengthy delay, it's starting to look as though he went unclaimed... which makes one wonder whether there's something more to the reason the Raiders waived him in the first place... or if not, whether the Cardinals should bring him in.
