Browns sign Andra Davis to five-year extension
BEREA, Ohio - Linebacker Andra Davis signed a five-year contract extension Thursday as the rebuilding Cleveland Browns locked up their leading tackler and a team leader for the future.

Financial terms were not immediately known.

Davis, who has a team-high 169 tackles through 13 games, signed a one-year maximum contract tender before this season, which pulled him off the market as a restricted free agent. Without a new deal, however, the 26-year-old would have become an unrestricted free agent in the offseason.

But the Browns (4-9) made sure things never got to that point with Davis, the club's fifth-round draft pick in 2002.

"I'm just glad to have it done and just focus on bringing this program up," Davis said. "Me signing I think is a big part of it. I definitely want to be part of those core guys. We're laying the foundation."

Davis has adjusted well to a new role this season as first-year coach Romeo Crennel switched the Browns to a 3-4 defense. The 6-foot-1, 250-pounder has been a solid contributor since Cleveland picked him with the 141st overall choice in '02.

"We are pleased to have Andra back," Browns general manager Phil Savage said. "We feel he is a key piece in our defense and will continue to be as we build toward the future."

Davis, who recorded a career-high 170 tackles in 2003, was leading the club in tackles last season before a knee injury sidelined him for the final five games.

He had a career-high 20 tackles in Cleveland's win over Green Bay on Sept. 18. Davis was the AFC Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in the Browns' 22-0 win over Miami on Nov. 20.

Yeah me and Cardinal Law was wanting to bring him into the fold. Teams are getting smart and keeping their own.

Anyone who actually though he was going anywhere was kidding themselves. The same can be said for Hutch and Bentley, dont get your hopes up, half of the high priced guys you want will be re-signed or franchised before FA starts.

Start looking at the Berry's, Okeafer's, of the world in your offseason projections. The McCree's and the Davenports of the world.

Teams are way to savvy with the cap nowadays to loss stars.

IF we keep going for the Davenports and Mcrees we will keep winning 5 games a year. What is wrong with getting our hopes up? Hope is the only thing we Cards fans can go on.

Davenport would go a long way in improving our red zone/shortyardage running. Aren't people identifying that as a major problem??

You get playmakers in FA if you can........but mostly you gotta use FA to fill needs.

I think it is a problem. I just dont think he is the answer. If it means getting rid of Shipp I could live with it I guess.

Really so you dont think McCree is a better FS then Griffith.

Those types of guys may not be superstars but they are still upgrades who may be on the rise, ala Berry.

May be on the rise? I want proven players. Just because he is better than 50 year old Griffith doesnt say much

Just becuase they are on the rise doesnt mean they arent good.

Berry was good before we got him but he wasnt a pro bowler until he got here, he was still on the rise when we got him for cheap and he turned into to pro bowl status. Those are the only players that ever make it to FA's. 99% of the time Superstars do not leave via FA, period. They never have they never will.

McCree is already good but he isnt a superstar. But he is still young enough to be on the rise. You apparently dont even now who McCree is if you dont think he is a better FS then Griffith no matter how old he is. An upgrade is an upgrade and you get it where ever you can.

The only FA's you will ever find on the market are ones who are on the rise havent made it big yet, over the hill all stars, depth, role players, or 20 Mill signing bonuses who never live up to that status. Just look at all of the CB's that have gotten huge signing bonuses the last few year. Few if any actually live up to that status.

I agree that recently the cornerbacks have been overpaid. Would you also agree that Macklin is overpaid and cant cover me?

I know you led this post off with a smiley and all but Macklin is an above average corner and there is no reason to replace him unless Eric Green straight up beats him out for RCB next season. Macklin doesn't make very many mistakes like Eric Green has the tendancy to make and is a very solid tackler.

Not by much but I'll agree he is still better. With Wilson cheating up Grif has pretty much controlled the whole defensive backfield and I don't believe we've been beaten over the top since Wilson's breakout game vs. St Louis.

Macklin is above average, and he isnt paid a lot. He makes just the right amount.

He can not only cover you, but he can do it with Big Davis on his back. ;)

Mr. Macklin,

You must be incredibly proud. I hope, one day, my son can make it to the pinnacle of football as well. ;)

That seems like a good trade package. Macklin and Davis. Wonder if we can get a second rounder for these 2.?

I wonder if it is worth it to trade our best O-Lineman and a good corner? Okay I'll answer that one....... NO. How about we trade Shelton to Tenn. for Travis Henry.... oh wait you mean he's........ oh gosh.
