He's a good defensive coach, so that's a good fundamental to build on going forward. Highly doubt he experiences the same success as Harbaugh, however.

Broke my heart.

Despite living in NJ, I had never followed Rutgers football until Schiano hopped on board, but since then have watched the program move in the right direction, being developed in the right way.

I realize that "business is business" and that a bread-winner has to look out for his/her family first and foremost; but I'm more than a little uncomfortable with HC's who wear their "loyalty" on their sleeve only to leave their teams high and dry at the worst possible moments so they can pursue greener pastures.

Right now just before Signing Day, the 2012 Rutgers Recruiting Class threatens to be decimated by defections.

Meanwhile, what TB gets in Schiano is a "fundamentals" HC out of the Parcells and Coughlin mold. Whether he's successful or not is subject to the same whims of the "football gods" that influence the success or failure of every other NFL head coach - so you never know. But I do think he comes into the job with the right resume and the right profile.

Have to say as a Rutgers fan I'm gutted. A lot of talk of Rutgers making the top 10 next year but suspect that's gone, depending on how quickly they can replace him and keep the football programme moving forward.

Longest active winning bowl streak in college football (i know they werent major bowls but you can only beat what's put in front of you).

Be fair to the guy, Jeff. He's been at Rutgers for years, and the timing of HC hirings in the NFL directly relates to recruiting periods in college football. It isn't as if he stayed for a a year and bolted or anything like that, as Graham did at Pitt. A huge opportunity opened up for him and he took it. He's been hugely loyal to Rutgers over the years. Unless you expect him to just stay there until he retires or is pushed out, ala Paterno or Bowden, then he isn't betraying the school's loyalty.

My sister is a Rutgers alum and she is super bummed out about Schiano leaving. I will be interested to see how he does in Tampa.

Watch John McNulty become his offensive coordinator. John was his QB coach at Rutgers. So Cardinals might have "2" coaching openings to fill.

Nice call on this one. Just saw on NFL Network that TB has asked the Cardinals permission to talk to McNulty.

Don't be surprised when he becomes the new QB coach.

Cardinals QB coach.

It's still a lateral move according to the NFL. There are only two coaching designations: Head Coach and Assistant Coach. One cannot block an individual from interviewing for a HC position, but can for any other.

I'm still don't think too many HC's will block a coaches desire to coach somewhere he wants & possible advancement in duties or even more $$$...call it an unwritten rule. I can see the Cards granting his wish.

After Schiano was over-looked for the Penn State job (which I believe he would have taken, if offered) he figured this was his next best chance...

I really would have liked him for the job. He had a solid recruiting base in Florida. Can't argue with bringing in Brady's guy, though.

Somers is reporting that we denied McNulty permission to interview to be the OC in Tampa Bay.

That makes sense - you're saying that Schiano turned down previous jobs because he was waiting for Penn St., and when that didn't happen, he jumped on the TB HC job.
