Each owner will put up $30 million, giving him an initial half-interest in the team; the league will own the other half. Eventually each team is going to sell shares to the public, according to Play. Then the owner, the league and the fans will each own a third of every franchise.

Fans owning the franchise? Interesting.

i dont see a point to this at all. basically, what it would come down to is fans giving the team money.....and that's it.

wouldnt really be part of any decision making because the ONLY way the fans get a real vote is if they ALL vote the same.

IMO it would be just a ploy to get more money out of the fans.

I hope it gets off the ground. Could be fun. Mark Cuban owning a team in Vegas would be unreal.

Not exactly. If they're selling shares, you'll be able to sell your shares at a profit or loss, just like the stock exchange I would imagine. Interesting idea.

I think someone wasn't expecting to not have his face all over television this early in the summer, so he came up with some other way to get publicity.

Just shut up, Cuban. Geez.

I just don't buy that guys picked after the 2nd round will go for more money in a new league over staying in the NFL? Players want to be where the best football is played, it's very rare that guys have gone for more money in Canad over the NFL(Terry metcalf) and that's why.

Almost all new leagues fail, competing against the NFL would be very hard to pull off.

From the title, I thought this thread was about Desi Arnaz Jr starting his own league

I think losing in the first round caused Cuban to blow a gasket.

While I'd welcome a new league, this has failed many times before. The XFL lasted one season. The USFL lasted longer, but lost tons of money. The World League failed, too. How Cuban thinks this will succeed, I have no idea.

His argument that there is more demand than supply is correct. However, that doesn't mean football fans will watch a lesser product just because it's there. Hell, NFL Europe (or Europa, whatever they're calling it now) has been around for some time and none of my football fan friends watch it.

We want quality, not quantity. Maybe one of the reasons the NFL is so popular is because of the supply/demand ratio. As soon as the season's over, we look forward to the next, and I see that as a good thing.

The NFL is too established for anyone to challenge it, no matter what kind of backing they have. The reason that the AFL is successful is that it's a different game.

The PTI guys were talking about this today. I guess the founder is looking for 6-7 more BILLIONAIRES to invest. So far Cuban is the only to show interest. I don't think anything will come of it.

assuming the league last more than a couple years and turns a profit.

chances are though, that your average NFL fan IS NOT going to risk a couple grand into another league that has a HUGE chance at folding in a couple years. based on past endevors whoever buys into this is just throwing their money away.

Can we get Cuban to take the Cardinals for his new league and have the NFL send Arizona a new one?

Just think, no more articles with "have won only one playoff game since 1947" in them. :D

The USFL would have lasted had it not been for the legal battle. Ah...the Arizona Outlaws. How I miss thee. I think it's possible but it's an uphill battle. I liked some of the rules in the XFL but too much of it was gimmicky. If they could find a balance in between the XFL and the NFL and get a network behind it...anything is possible.

Cuban?...

I personally hate the sorry SOB, so I hope it's a big flop. Yes, I root for the Spurs but respect the hell out of the Suns and even Phoenix fans have to have some ill for the most arrogant A-hole owner of professional basketball...no?

I can't stand Cuban, either, but the guy seems to be a pretty smart businessman. Still, I think he's nuts to try another football league, given past (non) success of others who have tried.

The key to a second football league is not to compete with the NFL but with college. All those super-star talents with failing GPA's or guys who'd rather make 100k/year while waiting to be eligible for the NFL draft.

You get a college quality product on the field and I'd watch it.

Several years ago some of us were talking college football admissions requirements and came up with the idea of the "American Football School". Sort of like those American Truck Driving Schools or ITT Tech. There would be 8-12 of them around the country and guys could enroll there just to study football. We'd have some courses in things like hiring agents, managing money, reading and writing for a couple of hours and then nothing but football the rest of the day. We'd do infomercials on late night TV.

Each school would of course play the others in football.

We'd make a fortune on the Pell Grants.

:D
