Good news for Cards

Ian Rapoport ‏@RapSheet
This is a surprise: #Falcons LB Sean Weatherspoon will hit the open market and is unlikely to be back in Atlanta. Was a priority.

How much do you offer the guy though? He has been injured like half his career. I wouldn't break the bank for him unless its an incentive based contract where he can earn more with playing time and production.

Would rather go for broke on a pass rusher like Hughes if he can play OLB or Worilds. If Orapko can be had on a reasonable deal for his talent level then maybe go for the proven guy and hope he can stay on the field a whole season.

Incentive contract and I'd be all over this signing. If he stays healthy, that's one hell of a linebacker. Great on the field talent, athletic, and one hell of a leader. Just what the Cardinals want in that area.

Would be nice move RT @Rand_Getlin: LB Sean Weatherspoon is leaning toward signing with the #AZCardinals, per a league source.

A lower price because of his injuries might be one of the reasons Cards chasing Weatherspoon.

Will he be able to get out of the hot tub long enough for BA's liking?

Weatherspoon isn't a guy loafing through a soft tissue injury. He suffered serious knee injuries the last two years. When healthy, he's just behind the best linebackers in the game.

the question is... will he be close to the same player after suffering serious knee injuries the last two years? I'd hate to see this as another Bradley type signing where we're counting on a guy who was good two years ago.

From rotoworld.com

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports free agent LB Sean Weatherspoon is unlikely to re-sign with the Falcons.

Atlanta has been adamant in their desire to re-sign Weatherspoon, but he looks poised to test the open market. Weatherspoon missed all of 2014 after tearing his Achilles' last June. A first-round pick of the Falcons in 2010, Weatherspoon has played only one full season in his career and has played just seven games the last two seasons. Weatherspoon is reportedly leaning towards signing with the Cardinals.

So the Cards will have an LB who is one whiz quiz away from being out of the league and another who might not ever play a full season.

So this is a guy the Cards and I both liked out of college. Great energy, solid technique and is a leader. Hasn't been able to stay on the field due to injuries, but has looked good in those few moments. This is a smart free agent signing. You buy low on a guy who is young, and has been a disappointment for the team that drafted him. You aren't going to get him on a prove it deal, but you won't pay him what he is worth if healthy. It also allows you to draft an ILB early.

Weatherspoon, Trent Cole for the John Abraham role, and a long term answer at C are good moves.

Falcons really didn't want to lose him:

"Sean Weatherspoon is going to be an important part of building this defense and building this team," general manager Thomas Dimitroff said Tuesday, via The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "He has that side of him and that leadership that we need across the board."

Weatherspoon recently advanced to running after missing the entire 2014 season due to an Achilles tendon tear last June.

"He's a guy that's really, really focused on his rehab," Dimitroff added. "We need him back in this organization to help us go to another level. He's starting to move around."

Weatherspoon piled up 210 tackles, 7.0 sacks and 12 passes defensed from 2011-12. He was the Falcons' top defender before the Lisfranc, knee and Achilles injuries of the past three years.

oy... Lisc Franc, ACL AND Achilles? That's a rash of different injuries. Depending on a guy who's body simply doesn't seem like it can take the pounding of the league seems questionable to me.

unless its a low cost, low cap prove it deal with lots of incentives.

yeah... but even in that case, I'd hope that they wouldn't just sit on the position. low money or not, if they're penciling him as a starter, it gives me a little bit of the willies because that might mean that position is taken care of.

He is a risk/reward guy, but worth it IMO. If he has just been unlucky, then the Cards get a steal. If he can't take the NFL, you are cutting him. Essentially, the Cards only need him to stay healthy until Washington's suspension is over. After that, they have two options at that spot.

but will he even be healthy for that? When did he tear his achilles (I don't know the answer to this)? That's an 8-9 month recovery and even then, players seem to take more time to actually get back to serious game speed, if they ever do.
