that was on the field of play, before the whistle...and not apparently done in spite

Not done in spite? That was the game where they were trying to kill eachother. Beckham set the record for most unsportsmanlike penalties in a game and was suspended. Much worse than what Gronk given he was doing it all game.

Holy crap histrionics. Sure it was a dirty hit, but I've seen the Rams do dirtier hits almost every year.

The hit on Warner by the Saints was way dirtier.

But Warner was hit during the course of an actual play. Gronk hit a defenseless player well after the play ended. Additionally, in a league dealing concussion issues, the hit has now put a player into concussion protocol.

No way this is dirtiest play ever but let's not act like what Gronk did was nothing. This is 2017 and football is different today than even 3-4 years ago. I think a four game suspension knocked down to two sounds about right.

I see people can't read, either. Never said dirtiest hit ever, but this year. So stop bringing up stuff from prior years.

Darn Jon, I was going to dis your post by bringing up that time Dick Butkus.....well....just about EVERY Butkus hit....

Just kidding with you. I was watching the end of that game waiting for the Cardinal game and I couldn't believe my eyes. Dirty, cheap, extremely dangerous and totally uncalled for. I think he should have been suspended longer (maybe 4 games) but who knows what the NFL is going to do on any given situation these days?

Gronk is not cute, he's not entertaining, at least to me. The things he does, if they were done by some other players, they would be crucified in the press. But Gronk is held to a lower standard for whatever reason.

Cheap shot well after play dirty as hell! Should be multiple game suspension period, but won’t because he plays for the Pats...

For the record, Gronk's hit wasn't only dirty, it was a punk move and he deserves more than one game. And we'll know how NE gets preferential treatment if Smith-Schuster gets a bigger suspension even though his hit wasn't dirty(standing over him certainly was uncalled for). And WTH is he appealing? It was a blatant dirty hit. I just didn't agree that the hit was worse than domestic violence.

You guys are ridiculous. Most of you that said Brady got screwed over by deflate gate suspension are now saying the Pats get preferential treatment.

I think the league just doesn't know how to deal with this stuff

The problems with this play are:
  1. Well after the whistle
  2. Defenseless player
  3. Target not engaged in any football activity / anticipating any hit or target
  4. A deliberate effort to land a hard cheap shot
  5. Delivering a blow directly to the back of the head
The guy ended up concussed, which only adds injury to the above.

That play was a lot worse than the hit on Burfict last night.

Is wasn't as bad as Bertuzzi in the NHL, but was on that same plane

People are blinded by their hate. That gif of ODB on Norman is 10x dirtier.
No hate - I have always liked Gronk! But not only did he drop an elbow on the back of a defenseless guy's head long after the play was over - he used his hard elbow brace. Incredibly uncool and my opinion of Gronk has now gone way, way down.

I'm not going to try to rank it on the spectrum of other unsportsmanlike hits - i just know that that was one cowardly, dangerous move. #Sad.

If this was done on the street, Gronk would be in jail. Instead, he gets suspended one game against the Dolphins.

This is worse than the allegations against Elliot. Should be minimum 6 games for this.

You're insinuating that he should be suspended for nearly half the season for the hit? Was it dirty? No question. Is six games excessively punitive? Yes. A one-game suspension is fine given a) he doesn't have a history of dirty plays and b) it would be inconsistent with other recent rulings. In fact, had this occurred in the last two seasons, it's simply a large fine.

I'm trying to figure out what was wrong with the hit on Burfict. Sure standing over him was bush league but the hit looked clean to me.

Standard protocol. 95% of suspensions/fines are appealed. Of those 95%, about 99% are denied.
The thing is, what is he appealing? That the hit wasn't dirty or that he shouldn't have been suspended?

He's probably seeing if he can get it reduced to a fine. Even the most obvious, egregious fouls get appealed. Guys want to play and save their money, and the appeals process is collectively bargained in the CBA. Why not take a chance at getting your punishment reduced, even if it's slim-to-none?

That’s not entirely true. Maybe recently the appeals get denied, but historically they appeal and get the suspension reduced in games. Obviously you can’t reduce a 1 game suspension. Maybe tell him he can’t play the first half lol

I'm talking in total, which includes Friday fines, such as for roughing the passer, crack back blocks, lack of adherence to uniform code, etc. It rarely gets reported because there are always so many fines issued and rarely are they overturned.

I don't know how you can say Smith-Schuster wasn't a dirty hit. He intentionally led with his helmet into Burfict's helmet and tries to come up under his chin.

They have taken this play out. I don't necessarily agree with it, but they are.

Looked like he put his shoulder into the chest of a guy in range of making a tackle, but guys are no longer responsible for seeing the field and protecting themselves

This call happens a lot over the past few years, but typically just a fine

If they can show he went head hunting then suspend him, but the hit just looked like physics in motion

That hit was far worse but is not relevant. Q was in play. The guy GronkAzz hit was on the ground already down, out of bounds and I am willing to bet a lot the whistle had already blown (given he'd already been touched down). There was NO PLAY IN PROGRESS. There was no scrum, there was no action. Just a blatant assault with intent to injure.
