Mike D'Antoni will reunite with Nash and be the new HC for the Lakers. His will debut against the former team that he coached for and Nash's former team....your PHOENIX SUNS!!

Source: Mike D'Antoni will be the next coach of the Lakers. Not Phil Jackson.

Mike D'Antoni signed a four-year deal with the Lakers. Phil Jackson was "asking for the moon," accoring to source familiar w/ the situation.

I mentioned in another thread that I had a warm spot for the Lakers going back to the days of Elgin Baylor and Jerry West.

The Lakers hired the No-D (that's for Defense or Developing young players) to coach for four years? Because when his Daddy, Jelly Bean Bryant, played in Italy, Cobe liked D'Antoni as a player? I know, he's there to make Steve Nash relevant.

The warm spot has chilled. Beat L.A.! :mulli:

I'm not gonna lie, I am very interested to find out how this one will end. D'Antoni gets a worse Nash than the one he had in PHX but he gets a much better roll player in Dwight than who he had in PHX (A'mare)

Plus Lakers have far superior defensive talent that any of the Suns teams had.

I can't wait to see how we matchup against them.

When did Dwight become a roll player? Also, this could go down in spectacular flames. Mike believes in his system to a fault and D'Antoni has always put offense before defense. Having said that, he has two players now in Nash and Kobe that can run his offense if the other is on the bench. Something he never had the luxury of here. I admit I am intrigued but that's about it. In many ways this is a huge gamble for D'Antoni as well. If he can't get it done with a loaded roster and the backing of one of the largest most popular organizations.....this might be the last head coaching stop for Pringles.

Kobe, Nash and Gasol getting worn into the ground everytime the Lakers play a close game... only 5 guys on the team having defined roles, awful management of the 4th quarter...

As a Laker loather, I'm excited for this. I think the Lakers season just jumped the shark. I expect them to blow bad teams out of the water and then get depantsed by other contenders.

Somewhere Greg Povavich is smiling.

I think he is referring to the "roll" in "pick-n-roll".

Interesting that they passed on Jackson to sign D'Antoni. I guess Jackson was too demanding. I think this is a good fit for them. You have a defensive anchor in Howard, something the Suns never had. And you have a guard other than Nash who can create his own shot in Kobe, something the Suns only had for a year in JJ. Kobe also gives D'Antoni another playmaker. Again, something the Suns never had under D'Antoni. And now you have a coach that will simply let the players play and let the PG run the show.

The Suns best D'Antoni team was 2004-05 and the management only gave them one year to win a title before the slow process of deconstruction begun. This Lakers team is even more talented and I'm guessing their current core will get more than one year to win a title.

The title eluded the Heat their first season as well. I don't expect the Lakers to win a title this year regardless of who is playing or coaching. Too many variables.

Personally I hope that franchise never wins another title, but until the Suns are competitive again, which probably won't happen until most of the current Lakers core retires, I really don't care that much who wins what.

Wait, what? You think that Dwight Howard is a better pick and roll recipient than Amare [was]? That is crazy, in my opinion. Amare could shoot a jumpshot (when he wasn't charging), and pretty reliably after a season or two. Dwight is good for a dunk. What else can he do? I am not saying that Amare is/was a better player than Howard - I am saying that in the pick and roll when D'Antoni was with the Suns, Amare was better than Howard is right now.

DAntoni lucks into a situation in which the players on the court are probably better coaches than he is. He won't mess it up as much as Brown because he trusts Nash and Kobe alot. DAntoni works well with vet players. He never coaches defense, but has some talented players defensively so that will probably work out OK.

If Mike doesn't overplay his vets, he could win a championship.

The one thing D'Antoni WON'T have is Nash circa 2007. It's going to be a rude awakening for him.

Congratulations to Mike D'Antoni. I think he will be a great fit in LA, sadly considering the draft picks the Suns received from the Lakers. He will open the throttle and let their players do what they do best.

Yeah I got that. However, Karl Malone was pick and roll type player. Amare was more of a pick and roll player here. Howard is I will back you down, run over you and dunk on your face player. That was my point.

Also, D'Antoni just needs to be serviceable and let this team play defense to have a chance. Mark my words though....if D'Antoni starts having players leak out versus crashing the boards to make the Lakers play 7 seconds or less.....this team will go down in flames.

When you have Dwight Howard on your team, you can afford to have the other four players leak out once the shot is up. I am not a D'Antoni fan, but let's be honest- in Phoenix, he really didn't have much to work with when it came to defense and/or rebounding. He is not going to become a defensive coach, that's for sure, but there is a big difference between having Amare as your Center and having Dwight Howard as your Center.

I don't know how this will play out, so I am limiting my predictions to the fact that Dwight Howard will still be a great defensive player/ rebounder even with Mike D'Antoni coaching the team.

I personally disagree. I don't feel like the Lakers really have that many fast and athletic guys that do really well in a D'Antony system. Not saying the Lakers will suck, but I don't think they will run that offense as well as the D'Antony Suns did.

he also doesn't have shooters to spread the floor which his system needs. he also doesn't have speed to get out and run which his system needs.

it's gonna be really interesting to see if once Nash comes back healthy that he puts the ball in Nash's hands 90% of the game to run around like a chicken with his head cut off and how that effects Kobe.

this will be very interesting indeed.

If the Lakers had gotten Nate McMillan or Jerry Sloan, I would have been worried. But with D'Antoni I feel more confident that this wont work out.

I wonder how this affects Pau. D'Antoni has always struggled when having two big men on the floor at the same time (Amare & Shaq) (Amare & Chandler)

Unless Pau is gonna start shooting 3s more consistently, I have a feeling he won't have much of a role there.

d12 is the best pick and roll center in the league. Pau is the best PF pick and roll player in the league.

Not sure what you are thinking about here.
