First, I want to express that this is inexcusable, and the attention should be on the victim, may they rest in peace.

But, this kind of thing always gives me the willies. Just imagine being on top of the world in a lot of ways at one moment, and the next moment you come to, you're in prison forever, more or less never seeing the light of day again.

Terrifying.

One other thing I'll say, Vegas, more than almost anywhere in the United States, needs a better public transportation system. For a city so focused on serving alcohol nearly everywhere at all times, it's amazing that an Uber or Lyft is really the only choice to get anywhere.

Having lived in NV, I was worried about things like this for the NFL since Casino's are a 24X7 world designed for you to not know what time of day it is. I don't know he was in a casino, but it's easy in that environment to have drinks sneak up on you.

Uber and Lyft is enough... seriously trying to make an excuse in today’s day and age and blame public transportation? No bueno.... and no sympathy for Ruggs. Hope he gets the full 20 years...

If worse comes to worse the city bus runs on every major street in this city. USE IT!

Drinks don’t sneak... Every living person downing drinks before they get into a car knows what they did. They just don’t care. Smh

He rear ended a Toyota Rav 4 with enough force to kill the Driver and start a fire that engulfed the SUV in flames.

It's hard for me to believe that he wasn't driving at an extreme speed to Kill a driver being rear ended.

A corvette, hitting a mid-size SUV from the rear and killing the driver just screams excessive speed to me.

man... that's awful. had to be a gnarly collision for that to happen under those circumstances.

Ya know, Shane. I was one of those people for many years. I drove drunk and didn't care, even with my kids in the truck with me. I can only be ashamed of that, but grateful I was able to snap one day and never do it again. I will be forever thankful that no one was ever hurt because of my stupidly.

I have to slightly disagree with this. Of course it is 100% his fault and he has to live with the consequences. But 20 years? A lot of killers don't even get that much (at least here). I mean just imagine what 20 years behind bars will do to that man?

I mean I get the feeling of wanting some kind of "redemption" for what he did, but destroying his entire life is not gonna bring the victim back. Should he be punished? Absolutely! Should he spent some time behind bars? Absolutely! But 20 years...that's not gonna help anyone.

When people are intoxicated, they don't think normal. They don't think period. Vegas doesn't have taxis?

My thoughts to the victims, also. I also hope this young man comes out of this, eventually, a much better person for it

I don’t care if it destroys his life. He just destroyed a young woman’s life and her families. For what? Literally for what?

It benefits everyone if his life isn’t a disaster and he becomes a productive member of society post prison. I can differentiate murder and manslaughter but that said he needs to be made an example of.

Any adult who kills someone after he drinks and drives doesn't deserve a second chance to do that to someone else and their family. Even if the victim doesn't die, I know personally how it can destroy a mother and her son, who had to care for his disabled mother giving up the best years of his life.

You can never take back what you do. Life is dangerous enough when everything is done righteously. To go through life stupid and careless causes nothing but misery and sorrow to oneself and others.

The NFL obviously needs to educate these you kids more about responsibility and the dangers and temptations they will be facing on a daily basis.

It also serves as a deterrent. If you think “Uber or risk 20 years?” Which would you choose?

You know what else is a long time? Someone’s entire life. Gone. Due to solely to someone being reckless enough with just about anyone’s life they would’ve encountered during that drive. Yeah, 20+ years works. I’d be devastated if it was someone I loved going to jail for 20 years, but I’d have a tough time arguing against it.

The league does a lot of it. That’s not going to change these kids. We have to remember they’ve been coddled, protected, told they’re gods, paid like royalty, and catered to all their lives with little accountability. They think they’re superheroes. That they’re invincible. That they’re above the law. Not all of them - this is a gross over-generalization of course - but at least some of this is applicable to almost every high end athlete from early discovery of their talents.

There have been countless studies that show that stricter punishments don't have any positive effect in general prevention. So I just can't see who it would serve any good to lock him away for 20 years, no way he is going to be a functional member of society after that.

And believe me, I know this feeling of wanting some sort of vengeance very well. I actually had a family member who died in a similar accident. But that is not the role of the criminal justice system, at least in my eyes.
