Quick, ask the Mercury center whether she'll play for the Suns! That would solve everything, right?

Maybe former Mercury center Maria Stepanova. ;)

She was 6' 8."

Yeah, but she would probably get pregnant again. :)

She would still get more RPG than Stat did. ;)

PS they swept San Antonio. On to the conference finals.

Trivia! The Phonix Mercury shot 85% from the free throw line as a team. Last year they shot 86% from the free throw line as a team, which is a WNBA record and better than any NBA team in history, too!

You can't compare it to the NBA. The WNBA uses a smaller ball.

I have a 7 year old daughter and I think its cool that she gets to see women in a prominent athletic role other than bimbo cheerleader.

Take her to a WTA or LPGA or AVP match or college soccer game. Basketball is no more of a woman's sport than football or hockey. It doesn't work.

I don't mean to be a hater, but C'Mon Man the talent level is awful.

Someone still living in basketball stone-age??
They are an exciting team to watch. I took a niece and my boy to go see them once and we enjoyed the game.
It will be interesting to see if they are able to win back-to-back.
Will that make them the first AZ professional sports to do that?

I think it's the WNBA that is still living in the stone-age, someone needs to teach those girls some layup drills cause they are atrocious.

When was the last time you watched?

The talent level is much higher than it used to be.

You can't tell me that some of these players aren't immensely talented.

Diana Taurasi and Penny Taylor aren't talented? Lauren Jackson and Becky Hammon aren't good basketball players?

I think you might be living in the stone age.

I'll watch when they play an actual NBA game - same rules, regulations, etc as the men. The W might as well be for "Watered down." It's glorified women's college basketball with best of 5 winning a title after a super short season of games with specialized rules for women.

They are a little like the NBA off the court though. Taurasi did get an extreme DUI speeding around the streets of Phoenix. :|

Is there a womans sport that plays by exactly the same rules as the men?
Tennis maybe?

I understand if people don't like it and don't watch but why go out of your way to comment and trash it?

Tennis has different rules...the women play best of 3 sets in a match while men play best of 5.

But women's tennis has never gotten in anyone's face and declared equality with a line like "We Got Next."

Not really trashing it as a whole...just recognizing it for what it is instead of putting it on the same level. I wish they'd play more games and have more of the same rules. It would be more relevant and might have a bigger following.

Only in the grand slams. In regular tournaments, men play best of three also.

You must be joking. You're threatened by that line?

So do you also not follow men's college basketball? (I don't.)

They should schedule games against men's teams. Then I might be interested,

Bowling. A woman won a ("men's") PBA tournament earlier this year.

Car racing, obviously, if you consider that a sport.

Many track events are played by the same rules for men and women: Run a certain distance as fast as you can.

At least one minor league "men's" hockey team has used a female goalie. High school football teams have used female kickers.

Golf is played by the same rules except for tee placement, which is also different for senior men. When Sorenstam played in a PGA event, she was playing by the identical rules as the men.

Men are bigger and stronger than women, so they'll have an advantage in most sports. I think one has to be pretty narrow-minded to conclude that that invalidates women's sports, however. Basketball is extreme because size and strength are such a big part of the game, men's advantage is overwhelming.

To those who refuse to watch the WNBA because the quality of play is inferior, do you also refuse to watch men's NCAA bball or boys high school bball?

Personally, I stopped watching college bball because the quality was so low. I stopped watching most non-Suns NBA bball because of the officiating.

I follow men's college basketball. Why?

Similar to what Bufalay said, it's illogical to reject the WNBA for playing by different rules from the NBA, then embrace men's college basketball, which does exactly the same thing. In fact men's college basketball is much closer to WNBA rules than it is to the NBA.

Not illogical at all. I'd expect a difference between college sports and professional sports. No big deal.

There are differences between the NCAA game and the NBA game. The WNBA is not much different than women's college ball - so what makes it "professional"? That was my original point. The WNBA is glorified women's college ball.

Hey, they are on the right track:

Wikipedia:

Games are divided into four 10-minute quarters as opposed to the league's original two 20-minute halves of play, similar with FIBA rules (many WNBA players play in European or Australian leagues, which all use the FIBA rule set).

A recent trend with new WNBA rules has been to match them with a similar NBA rule.

Beginning with the 2006 WNBA season:

* The winner of the opening jump ball shall begin the 4th quarter with the ball out of bounds. The loser shall begin with the ball out of bounds in the second and third quarter. Previously, under the two-half format, both periods started with jump balls.
* The shot clock was decreased from 30 to 24 seconds. The rule changes signaled a move away from rules more similar to those of college basketball and toward those that provide a more NBA-like game. FIBA also uses a 24-second clock.

The 2007 WNBA season brought changes that included:

* The amount of time that a team must move the ball across the half-court line went from 10 to 8 seconds.
* A referee can grant time-outs to either a player or the coach.
* Two free throws and possession of the ball for clear-path-to-the-basket foul. Previously only one free throw was awarded as well as possession.

This. Exactly this.
