Montreal Alouettes sign QB John Skelton

The Montreal Alouettes have reached a two-year deal with ex-Cardinals quarterback John Skelton, the CFL team said Friday.

A Fordham product, Skelton was a fifth-round pick in the 2010 NFL Draft (No. 155). Arizona traded up with Pittsburgh to select him, sending cornerback Bryant McFadden and a 2010 sixth-round pick (No. 195) to complete the deal. With pick No. 195, the Steelers took wide receiver Antonio Brown.

To further point out the stupidity of Ken Whisenhunt. Trades UP to get a stiff of a QB while trading a decent CB(who we overpaid to get in the first place) and a WR who ends up leading the entire league in receiving.

People love to use example of Brady or even Wilson to show that you can find a franchise QB late in the draft. QBs taken past second round have issues that make them fall under development label. Too many QBs get drafted because they physically look like QBs. That is why I hate to see a team waste a draft pick after the second round on a QB. Very unlikely a QB from third round or later will develop into a franchise QB. The whole concept of the draft is that the players with most potential get picked first. I would rather a team sign an undrafted QB as a FA then pick a QB past second round.

I do love to see when people finally realize a guy cant play QB. If they do finally see the light and bash a guy I would like for them to admit that they had at one point supported the QB. It can be taken one step further. I vividly recall people defending Whiz by saying "In Whiz We Trust" when he did things like promote Skelton as a QB. How many Whiz bashers fit that category? There were so many people in AZ backing Skelton, McCown, Kolb and other QBs who I cant even recall. Just to get the ball rolling. Thomas will never do anything in NFL. There are guys like Kolb and Whitehurst who fans decide they are stars despite limited or no body of work. Recall how AZ fans wanted Whitehurst and the buzz about him.

As is the case with many young quarterbacks, Skelton was ruined by playing behind a bad offensive line. He started out with decent accuracy and could have developed into something. By the time he was done in Arizona he was missing throws by yards.

Both starting quarterbacks in the recent Super Bowl dropped in the draft because they didn't fit the prototypical mold.

Warner played behind a bad o-line too. Bad o-line excuse only goes so far.

The thing is, you can move semi-successful QBs for a lot if you continue to draft and develop them. Kolb, Schaub, Hasselbeck... All names of guys that provided their teams value after also doubling as successful backups. You cite two guys that became true stars, too. Those two QBs turned the fortune of their franchise around. Why not take a risk every one to two years on a guy that might be special? It's not like other positions in the draft don't wash out just as much depending on round... But the reward is potentially much higher.

Wouldn't those moves be on the GM?

Nope. Probably collaboration with the GM but Coach had final say on roster. But, it didn't really matter once Warner retired the Cards were doomed. The combination of Coach Whisenhunt and Rod Graves were inept in player evaluation ESPECIALLY the QB position.

I'm sure Whiz had influence, as all HC's do, but the GM is in charge of free agency and the draft. Whiz had final say on the final 53 man roster to go out and play on Sundays, not on who the team acquires.

So the coach just sits in the war room twiddling his thumbs on draft day?

The year of Anderson and others a story appeared in AZ Republic that Whiz wanted Bulger who had been released late was told no for financial reasons. If an organization did not listen to input of HC in player selection it would be very sad organization indeed. Back in 70s there was another instance of an organization not listening to its HC. Don Coryell with Cardinals had his input in draft ignored when team selected offensive picks like QB Pisarkiwiecz when Coryell wanted defense to go with his league best offense.

No, but he doesn't make the final draft call or make trades with other teams.

But it is much easier to blame Whisenhunt for everything.

By 2010, Whis was the de facto GM. He was calling the shots.

Graves was a guy who would roll with whatever structure came along-- he was basically doing contracts at that time.

Sure would have rather rolled the dice with Skelton than Lindley, particularly with BA coaching. Skelton, for all of his warts, won several games on 4th quarter comebacks.

This is a great move for him---he needs the experience and all the reps he can get. I'll be very interested to see how he does. Like Hollywood, I wish him the best.

Good luck to Skelton. I was hoping BA and Tom Moore were going to teach him to be a good QB. It didn't happen but I wish the best for him. Good kid.
