I grew up just between Buffalo and Cleveland. They are used to snow in that area. And a lot of it. They average over 8.5 feet of snow a year in that neck of the woods. But they are not used to anything like they are predicting this weekend.
Erie? Jamestown? I went to SUNY Fredonia (where the Bills used to hold training camp in the 90’s SB years) and we used to get buried from time to time.

The record for the most snowfall in a 24 hour period is 75.8" in 1921. If these predictions in Buffalo come true, it could be the second largest one day snowstorm of all-time. Probably best to move the game.

Well now none of the Bills fans will be able to attend... so why not just keep the game in Buffalo, and ban fans from the stadium? No parking lots to clear, no concession stand workers having to get to the game, etc. Sure, they need to clear the field enough for the game and get the team busses to the stadium... but that's gotta be less work than flying everyone to Detroit and holding a game at a stadium where no one was scheduled to be this weekend.

...dave
Bills mafia is crazy. They will tailgate in the parking lot regardless.

To Ford field due to inclement weather and heavy snow…

I personally think this is incredibly lame. SMH it’s freaking football. Fans def get cheated.
Yep there’s a reason it’s called home field advantage! Shame on the NFL! What a wussified world today lol

And yep their new stadium is open air too, would they move it if it was the AFC Championship game if it was bad weather as it’s expected? Hmmm.

Don’t the know about snow plows? :).No fans or move the game to MNF or both.

They were showing why earlier on ESPN. this storm is supposed to be potentially huge and it means they have to deal with trying to make it possible for people to attend the game which means making sure roads are passable, parking lots clean of snow etc. It's a huge amount of work for a football game. They also said after the 59-0 debacle in New England Oct 18 2009, where the Pats beat the Titans, the NFL made some rules changes to try and avoid that sort of thing again.

The competition committee decided after that while they were still willing to play games in snow they weren't going to play in REALLY bad snow if it was avoidable because the caliber of the game wasn't worth the cost to make it viable for fans.
And? Complete BS excuse by the league! It’s called home field advantage

Because the league doesn't benefit from completely unplayable conditions. The Pats game was seen by the league as a complete disaster. They want a competitive league with competitive games.

And again as I said in my original post and others have said too, the cost and logistics involved to make it possible for fans to attend the game is not justified in the middle of a storm that's going to put the people who live there at great risk. They'd much rather those resources be saved for things like safety in the area than an NFL football game.

If you’ve never driven in zero visibility no traction ice covered roads, you have no perspective.

should shave read your post before I posted, could’ve saved some time. Where are you located? Luckily, it’s going to miss us here. Good luck to you.

I'm in AZ now, but grew up in the southern tier / finger lakes area - a bit outside of Corning. Still have family back there, hopefully they don't get hit to hard. Crazy that it's not even Thanksgiving and they're bracing for this.

Yeah, they do get hit. I did a summer program at Gannon in high school - hadn't spent much time in Erie ........ It was interesting.......

Love Corning/Ithaca area. One of the most beautiful places for hiking, waterfalls, vineyards, etc…. Trying to recruit people here. Taxes are too high but this area has so much variety to offer. I’ve driven cross country for 2 months to Las Vegas, Phoenix, Sedona, Lake Powell, etc… I loved them all but wouldn’t trade Upstate NY and Fingerlakes for any of them. We are blessed to live in a beautiful country.

No place I'd rather beer in the fall. Was back home last fall and spent a night in Syracuse before doing a couple nights in Clayton/ Thousand Islands - was warm for the season and about perfect

Places like Letchworth, Watkins Glen, Stony Brook, Taughannock Falls, etc - just a stunning area. Any of the finger lakes. I had a getaway in Skaneateles a number of years ago and that was really nice

Corning packs a good punch for a city of it's size.

Weather stinks about as much as employment opportunities through a lot of the area, but definitely find some peace whenever I'm there

Such a small world. I grew up in Skaneateles many years ago before it became elite snob lifestyles of the rich and famous. Couldn’t ask for more as a kid. Stony Brook is my favorite state park. I loved dunking my head underneath the waterfall.

Is this an actual low pressure system coming or Lake effect snow? This Arctic blast digging south over much of the country now is pretty damn impressive. Especially for only middle November. The lakes though I imagine are still quite warm.

So much ignorance on display in this thread. This was about safety more than anything.
meh, it’s ok. we are all going to make mistakes. I will not admit to understand what it’s like to live in Arizona, so I will not expect them to understand what it is like to live in upstate New York.

Heh - that lake is nice though with the little park next to it, also had a bunch of steamer clams at Doug's Fish Fry.

I've been in AZ too long, I have trouble when my pool is below 90 - I think the water at Stony Brook would be instant hypothermia at this point........

I see both sides. Players should play in the conditions given, although there has to be a limit.

But what they are predicting is too dangerous for fans to travel in. Like Arizona you have people driving 3-4 hours to get to games. That's just too dangerous. People would certainly get hurt.

Honestly no but that could be due to my ignorance being a desert kid my whole life. The girl I dated for years is from Buffalo and made several trips out there. Their attitude Toward inclement weather is pretty blasé. As a casual fan across the country outside looking in just seems like they’re equipped to handle it if anybody is they drive vehicles made for the snow etc. But def a thought to consider.
When there's that much snow, figure that an hour drive becomes a 3-4 hour drive, if you're lucky. If not, you get stuck on a road in a jam for a day or more. Yes, that has happened, though not to me.

I will say, if this is the playoffs, there is no way you can move the game. Also, if the forecast doesn't pan out, the NFL will have major egg on its face and, if I were a local fan, I'd want to sue. So long as the weather is as bad as predicted, this is the right call for a mid-season game.

It’s more about having fans driving to and from the game in white-out, can’t see 2 feet in front of you, roads not plowed and dangerous conditions. NFL and fans would love the spectacle but it could seriously lead to multiple fatalities via car accidents. Unless you’ve had to drive in conditions like that, you can’t understand.
Yes, listen to people that grew up in and have been exposed to these kinds of elements. This is not 12-15” of snow. This is 5-6 FEET! Having grown up in Syracuse, NY, the snow capital of the US, some of us understand that football CANNOT be played in elements of this nature. End of debate.

The amount of snow Buffalo is supposed to get will result in complete shutdown of all roadways. When snow comes down that fast there is no way the city nor the state will keep ahead of it. Add any wind to that and drifting snow will only make it worse. They wouldn't even be able to keep the field clear of snow. Moving this game was the only reasonable thing to do if they still wanted to play the game on Sunday. I have been through a few snowstorms in my life and believe me when I say snowfalls of 18"-24" are paralyzing, 5'-6' of snow is insanely crazy.

A road plowed with drifting snow from winds will look like a snow plow never even went through an hour later. That's how fast drifting snow will close a road again.
