Carroll to the Seahawks basically a done deal - an announcement expected Monday (assuming they comply with the Rooney Rule this weekend). Whoa! Where is the compliance!?! They interview a minority candidate knowing all along that they will hire Carroll. They are following the letter of the law without following the spirit. I completely agree with and support the Rooney Rule but teams continue to run out a dog and pony show to satisfy the rule. If the rule is designed to give more minority candidates a better chance at getting a HC job in the NFL then it is not working. All it seems to be doing is putting on a good show for the public.

The Rooney rule has to be the worst rule in the NFL IMO. No matter how good something may taste, you'll never want to eat it if it's rammed down your throat.

How stupid are people really taken for??? Does the league really think that a team is gonna be ready to hire someone and then go "Oh wait we never thought to interview a Black man. We should do that!!" And then they will magically fall in love with the African American candidate and hire them??? Give me and effn break. I dont remember who the sacrificial lamb was, but whoever the guy was that interviewed for Seahawks after Holmgren left had to do so with the knowledge that he had chance for the job. That has to be just a despicable feeling. Do you even prepare for the interview? The owners were obviously to scared of looking like Rush Limbaugh to vote against it, but it really is a joke. What more would you expect from a senile old idiot like Rooney?

Like most of the other laws in this country intended to provide equality this is just another degrading embarrassment for minorities IMO. Now whenever a minority gets an interview in the NFL there is no way they aren't wondering in the back of their mind whether they are nothing more than a quota interview? It's amazing how Rooney and his liberalism can run rampant in the NFL, but everyone wants to block out a guy like Limbaugh because he's "political".

Just saw he has agreed in priciple to the deal. I really think Carrol is a good Head Coach. Our division keeps getting tougher, though things may stay the same for at least 1-2 more years, us then the 9'ers.

Racism will always exist to some extent in all aspects of life. All we can do as individuals is treat others like we want to be treated. In the NFL, minority hirings will only happen if the owner & GM are willing to hire the best candidate regardless of their race or beliefs.

I am undecided on whether this is good for our division, however it is a GREAT DAY for the rest of the Pac-10.

yep.

To me Carrol's jump to the NFL signals that old adage is true, "Where there's smoke, there's fire". I think he see's USC is about to receive some serious penalties coming its way.

Firing Mora was a bad thing for the Cardinals. Hopefully Carroll is in total control of personnel and everything else. That usually doesn't work out.

I think the Rooney Rule is a fantastic rule.. If it wasnt for the Rooney Rule we would have never gotten Whisenhunt.. The Steelers were blown away by Tomlin that they totally shook off Whis and Grimm.. And we all know where they ended up ..

It's just a lame attempt, or a gesture really, at affirmative action. Affirmative action was/is a garbage law, and the Rooney Rule is garbage as well. Too often AA has been used for punitive action against non-minorities and to hire less qualified individuals. Thankfully the Rooney Rule is so ineffective, or we could see a dilution of the coaching ranks.

Note that I am NOT saying that hiring a black coach would be a bad thing, but that forcing a quota of actual hirings could very well be a bad thing.

I think he's going to do pretty well up there. I think his "failure" as a pro coach has always been overstated. He was 33-31 with two playoff appearances in four years.

His biggest problem is that the cornerstones of that franchise, Jones, Hasselbeck, Trufant, etc are pretty much all beat to crap and have to be replaced before they can compete at a high level again. But, with two first round picks this year, he does have some ammo to get that project going.

No one has said he was a "failure" just that he was very average as an NFL coach. Much like Dennis Erickson before he coached the 9ers.

He may bring them back to .500, but I can't see him as a legit threat in our division

Wait...what about the Skins? Did they interview a black coach before hiring Shanahan? I didnt hear of anything about the Rooney Rule when he was hired.

I'm not even worried about the NFL angle, but can someone please tell me how this helps the PAC 10? How exactly does this help ASU? How does losing a powerhouse like USC make any one feel any better. Its not like ASU or UofA will do anything to capitalize on the loss. All they will do is be what they have always been... mediocre to poor teams. Nothing will change. Every other school will make gains while we will be all wondering how ASU again misses the boat.

If you think I am a bitter USC fan, no actually I'm not. I just appreciated what USC was able to do for the past decade instead of the constant crap that ASU has put out over that time. Even all you UofA supporters have to face fact that the Wildcats won't ever get on the national level of a USC. I'm just disappointed for college football in general. There will now be no west coast team to challenge for a national championship for a long while.

Pete had every advantage in the book at USC. No reagrds to recruiting rules, the top recruiting classes every year, the PAC 10 was not a strong conference overall until lately, it owuld have been hard for hm not to win at an alrmingly high rate. Having the opposition out-manned at almost every position makes coaching alot easier and covers up alot of bad coaching decisions. If you have to even make any decisions. The NFL will expose him.

You are high if you don't think that next year's Arizona, Oregon, Oregon State and Cal teams can't compete nationally. U$C was and for now still is a crooked program that has been poaching the tops recruits the last 5-10 years. There are a TON of hot So Cal recruits in this year's class that could very well end up at any of the schools I mentioned, or at UCLA, who has been a great nationally competitive team in the past.

What exactly were these programs doing the 10 years prior to Pete Carroll? What makes you think anything will change? I am a fan of all things Arizona. I want ASU to do well. I want UofA to do well. I care. The athletic department and administration doesn't.

Trust me... I would love for it to happen, but it hasn't and I don't see it happening. Its not like I hate these schools... they just haven't gotten it done.

He'll pull a Saban. Go to the NFL for a big payday (and possibly in his case to escape violations). Have only moderate success for a couple of years, then come back to a high profile opening in college football.

I don't think it *helps* the Pac-10 in that it's good for the conference nationally for USC to be good. But hopefully what it means is that the players that would rather sit at USC than start for another Pac 10 team will prefer the latter instead of going to a Big 10 and Big 12 school. Especially ones from CA.

It's just liek the Detroit one where they fired the coach because they wanted to hire Mariucci and if Mariucci wasn't available, they wouldn't have fired the coach. They still got dinged over the Rooney rule.

Mora would likely still be the coahc if they weren't convinced they could get Carroll, but now Leslie Frazier is going to interview knowing full well they don't want him. It's even reported he "agreed" to interview as if yeah he knows he's not really up for the job.

I'm all for encouraging there to be more minority candidates but the Rooney rule is clearly creating a situation where if you know who you want, and it's NOT a minority, you have to do a charade like this.

I'm just not convinced you can be "buddies" with NFL players the way Carroll does at USC? At USC he's cool, he throws the ball to players at practice, they have Master P and Snoop Dogg on the sidelines, he runs up the score and seems to relish the reputation USC has gotten.

I don't think NFL players are impressed with that they're playing for one or both of 2 reasons, money, and winning.

That's why the 49ers didn't hire him years ago when he was a candidate they said he's too friendly with the players we don't think a head coach can be "one of the guys."

He's older maybe that will change.
