I've heard some stupid things said by athletes before but what former Card Antrel Rolle said is a doozey:

"We risk ourselves out there on the field each and every day also. When soldiers come home from Iraq you don't boo them. I look at it the same way. I take my job seriously."http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/blog/shutdown_corner/post/Rolle-says-booing-NFL-players-like-booing-soldie?urn=nfl-291590

Considering he played for a team who lost one of their own in the War on Terror, this was as idiotic a statement if there ever was one. Yes, he recanted but it still doesn't take away from how dumb the comment was.

No it isn't being blown out of proportion. And the only reason why he recanted is because of the attention he got from it.

real men have died so that his ass can whine about getting 5mil a year to play a game. They did it for less per year than he gets for a game,....maybe we should start shooting at him while he is in coverage so he has a better perspective.

I'm sure if our soldiers were making 5 mil a year and didn't get the job done they might be booed.

So yeah, I think Antrell has a point.

I believe most of us take our jobs seriously.

The problem I have with his words is that he is comparing the possibility of getting hurt or injured to the same possibility as a military person getting injured or maimed defending this country. The armed forces personnel are getting paid a pittance compared to antrel and can get injuries a lot worse than he ever can like losing their sight, a limb, etc. And that doesn't even consider the mental side of it seeing a buddy get shot or killed or seeing innocent civilians maimed. Being away from their families for months on end.

For me this firmly places antrel in the horses ass category.

The NY fans should toss debris in his direction next time he steps on the field.

:hammer:

He was doing his Kellen Winslow Jr. impression.

"It's war," Winslow said Saturday, his voice raised in the locker room. "They're out there to kill you, so I'm out there to kill them. We don't care about anybody but this U. They're going after my legs. I'm going to come right back at them. I'm a ... soldier."

Yea that was pretty f'n stupid. How many NFL players you seen actually killed on the field in the last 30 years?

I personally don't know of any.

Actually, I don't have a problem with what Winslow said. Football is a war. It is. Metaphorically speaking Winslow is right. However, comparing getting booed for losing and booing soldiers coming home from war are not the same.

Football is not war. It may be similar in some limited ways, but it is not war. It may not even qualify as like war.

Sorry, NJC, judges don't agree. :) j/k

Well not all judges agree. Just Yankee judges. :)

Guys don't get killed but they sure do get maimed and suffer lifetime debilitating injuries.

And it is not just a game. Not with Billions of dollars at stake.

Harvard v Yale might be just a game but even they don't play like it. Saw a kid carted off on a stretcher with his neck imobilized in that game this year.

But then people volunteer for this stuff. Nobody forces them to do it.

Football players are risking a lot too.
Sad thing is if a special teamer can hang he'll make more money than an E-4, even w/ hazard pay and full allowances.

Ain't that a thing?

Still, Antrel's fine by me.
We all say things we want back, that's his to remember after we've all forgotten.

He picked a bad example but the metaphor is perfectly valid. People need to get over this idea that comparing two situations means the situations should be viewed as of equal importance.

Yes they booed Vietnam Vets when they came home, and worse.
I booed the Cardinals Monday Night, I felt bad about it several times afterwards.
but that is what I felt.
I cheered and rallied alot too, being the outrageous fool that I am. I felt bad about it several times afterwards

Their was drunk Niner fans owning the crowd at UP stadium, a big fight in my section when I came back with a Jumbo Red Dog. I was disarmed and uninspired. indifferent.

Reminded me of SDS but what was I too respond

You, You You, Boogers.

The Niners crawled out of last place in the NFCW and 1 game out of first place with win over the NFCW Champion Cardinals.

Antrel should know, fans ultimately pays his check, and soldiers protect him and his way of life mostly without fan fare. He can strap em up for the Army Rangers if He chose too, find out the difference. I would cheer him then, loudly.

I agree.

While it was stupid, players say stupid things all the time, like when AW said he and Rhodes would be the best safety tandem in football, like when DA said the wind made his passes off target.
