Gee golly, what are the odds?

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - The first contracts for rebuilding post-war Iraq have been awarded, and Vice President Dick Cheney's old employer, Halliburton Co., is one of the early winners.

The Kellogg Brown & Root (KBR) unit of Halliburton (HAL: up $0.66 to $20.78, Research, Estimates), of which Cheney was CEO from 1995 to 2000, said late Monday that it was awarded a contract by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to put out oil fires and make emergency repairs to Iraq's oil infrastructure.

President Bush Tuesday asked Congress for $489.3 million to cover the cost of repairing damage to Iraq's oil facilities, much or all of which could go to Halliburton or its subcontractors under the terms of its contract with the Army.

Why would you be surprised Ed? The vice president's old employer submitted the lowest bid. Could be some sort of "home town discount" so to speak? I think it's great that this company decided to give us a discount out of gratitude to our vice president.

Well, your ingorance once again shines through.

They submitted the lowest bid out of the companies that were allowed to bid (only current US-owned government contractors) and Cheyney still owns Halliburton stock in trust, so he stands to profit personally from this. Foreign companies were not allowed to bid even though in the first Gulf War, all but 4 of the companies involved with the firefighting were from other nations.

So take your "this was fair and square" BS elsewhere.

He's dead serious, and his stupidity nauseates me.

This kind of mentality pretty directly explains our entire national political climate, which is roughly the intellectual equivalent of a grade school lunchroom during recess.

when you don't quite understand a situation...

... look to see who benefits financially. that's an old saying, I don't know by who...
Abe Lincoln gave a speech in which he decried the "enthronement of the corporation" as a detriment to the people in general. He spoke of the power of organizations that have no one actually responsable, and how they would use the power of their wealth to finally "destroy the Republic".
A lot of today's flag hugging, bible thumping, "Go USA! We're #1!"
people would be shocked at the documented statements by folks like Abe, Ike, Smedley Butler (early 20th century commander of the Marines) - that contradict the spoonfed, white ring, er rightwing media dominated paradigm of today...

If he were alive today, Thomas Jefferson would be denounced as a "bleeding-heart liberal" ;)

A lot of my lefty friends think that there's something wrong with me being a sports fan, but I don't fit in ANYONE"S box...

Ed B seems to be the ignorant one. How many companies out there really have the infrastructure to complete a project like this one? You can probably count them on one hand. You apparently don't know much of how the govt works with contractors So take you communistic, anti-american conspiracy theories to another board. Support your president and our troops or strap on an M16 and get out there and help fight with those people who are risking their lives, so you have the chance to spew your crap on this board.

dlovin...

questioning government policies and mentioning the corporate ties of the vice president is not "communistic and anti american" - it's being an aware and concerned citizen. Take a deep breath, relax, and THINK about the statements you read instead of allowing your buttons to be pushed by a key word or two.
The right wing has done a masterful job of equating ANY criticism of the system as "anti American"...

This is a Cardinal Board take this political Crap some where else.

I may not post much but I have been here as long as most and I prefer to talk about Cardinals or lighter issues.

If you want to talk about Politics find a different board and argue away.

By the way don't tell me not to read these posts as well with a title OT: The wonderful world of coincidence!

Yeah. What he said.

Football for most of us is a retreat from real world problems and issues. A thread like this should be titled "Warning: Political BS" rather than something innocent like "OT".

Ed: I'm glad to see others that post on this board that don't buy the crap that the media tells us, and don't take things for surface value.

I agree with portlandcard fan. The board that this belongs on is labeled everything else. The mods should know this.

I took a Justice class last semester (at ASU; it's my major). Whenever we were talking about a social or political issue, my professor would always ask "Who benefits? ".

A very fitting question when examining policy, institutions, and even history.

Wow are you dumb.

37 companies participated in the firefighting in the first gulf war. 33 were non-american.

As for the "communist, anti-american", you shouldn't be allowed to vote if that is how simplistically your mind works. Go wave your flag and enjoy your ignorance elsewhere, you jingo. Maybe you can find some arab-americans to firebomb if you look hard enough.

And for the record, "OT" means "off topic" meaning "not about football" so don't read it in the future if you only want to discuss football.

Actually the "who benefits" quote is from Marx, be careful about quoting him around here!

Oh, I know that. Marx to many Americans is a dirty four letter word, even though he was a great political mind.

Marx's theories are intriguing. Love Thomas Jefferson.

I'm a little confused with the implications of this thread however:
Seems to have a little liberal twist and yet anti media. What gives?

The media isn't liberal! That's a giant myth about our society. The fact that a network like CNN can be considered "liberal" goes a long way towards proving how conservative this society has become. I mean, they're not as conservative as Fox News or something like that, but by the standards of this country as little as 30 years ago they're by no means leftists or anything.
