No, it isn't. Diluting the product and overexposing everything doesn't make fans happy. The douche commissioner and douche owners will try over time to have football on every day of the week. I can't think of a better way to make everyone shrug and say To Hell With It. They want every minute of my time, every fiber in my brain, and every cent in my wallet. I just want a little weekend diversion watching the Cards for a couple hours.

This!

I'm pretty sure the NFL put the first half Thursday night games out for bid because they were getting poorer than expected ratings on the NFL network. So by having the games on CBS early on they can get people used to watching football on Thursday nights and when they go back to being only on the NFL network the audience will follow. The craptacular games they've had on Thursday nights might cause that to backfire though. Curious to see what is going to happen to the ratings on the NFL network once they're exclusive and what the NFL does with the Thursday night games next year.

Almost every TNF game is trash. Last year wasn't any different. I look forward to these games every week but they are almost never worth the time I spend watching them. The truth hurts.

This season's slate of Thursday night games sure has sucked so far. But i looked back at last year's results and they were much different.

Turns out that people are jumping to conclusions based on recency bias.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/10/03/the-nfl-wants-you-to-know-thursday-isnt-that-bad/
[...] Since 2006, the average margin of victory in Thursday games is 13.6 points. In non-Thursday games (i.e., ones played with a normal amount of rest) 12 points.

[...] Since 2012, home teams in non-Thursday games have a better winning percentage than home teams on Thursdays (.588, 314-220-2 vs. .579, 22-16).

So, let's just hope that the rest of the season's games turn out a lot better than the first five!

The reason football ratings are so much better than baseball's ratings is mostly that there are so many damned baseball games in an endless season, none of them matter. Too much. Overdone. Overexposed. Diluted.

After the college season is over, they extend to Saturday games as well. So now I've got early Monday games, late Monday games, Thursday games, Saturday games, early Sunday games, late Sunday games, nighttime Sunday games, then I get to start over again Monday.

Blecch. How long before Tuesday Night Football debuts?

I know your post maybe sounds crazy to a lot of people, but I am 100% certain we will wind up with the NFL on every day of the week at some point in the future. TV will pay for it, and the NFL will take the money.

Actually, I don't believe they had Saturday games last season.

I apologize if this question has been asked. We all know that the Thursday night games have been awful, and my question is this:
"How do the TV ratings for CBS (which shows the games, along with NFL channel) compare with the 8-11 ratings for NBC, ABC, and FOX?"

I think someone posted above that they're pretty comparable.

The football game on CBS had a 5.9 rating with a total audience of 16.5 million. The biggest show on the other networks was Scandal with a 3.4 rating and a total audience of 10.7 million.
When DVR viewers are added then the competition will go up more than football as more people are likely to watch football live. However, there were people also watching the game on the NFL network that aren't included in the total.

they're not really comparable. NFL DOMINATES the ratings, getting a 5.9 in the demo (just on CBS) and 16.5 million viewers compared to the next highest rated show during the time period getting a 3.4 and 12 million viewers. That's a huge gulf ratings wise, especially in the biggest stat advertisers care about, which is the demo.

in other words, this ain't going away anytime soon.

cheesebeef, you done broke the code. No way that the networks/NFL give up the Thursday night game.

haha... any day or time the NFL wants to put their product on TV, it's going to KILL anything else in it's path. Pre-season games... PRE-SEASON AWFUL FOOTBALL GAMES, regularly blast away anything else on the air. Now, some of that is because the networks don't begin fall season new prgramming until September, but I think I saw something that showed that NFL Pre-season games ratings were better then any NBA playoff game, and close to any NBA Finals game this year.

NFL is King in this country and will dominate until... hell, I don't even know when. They faced down one of the ugliest PR nightmares I can remember an entire league having and what happened? Ratings went UP.

Considering MLB keeps putting it's playoff games on subscription TV that's not a stretch.

Crappy football is better than no football. :D

My LSU tigers played crappy football today. Auburn put up a 40 burger. I watched anyway. Painful.

I love the idea of the teams that are coming off the bye week play all Thursday night games. I think they should look into scheduling it that way.

Well, I guess I would watch a crappy Cardinals game but that's it.

Life is too short to watch crap like these Thursday night games have been so far. What do I care about the frigging' Vikes-Pack and their obese fan bases if they can't even put on a half-assed show?

As suggested above,

schedule Thursday games after a bye week.

make games more regional...don't make a west coast team travel cross country( except for 49er's and Seahawks LOL).

don't start thursday night gmes until week 4.

This would level the playing field a bit for visiting teams and make a much more competitive game not to mention players saftey by giving them a chance to physically heal.

How frustrating to be a Jets fan. They flat out dominated the running game tonight 3 trips inside the redzone and three straight field goals, pull within two late and instead of lining up and punching it it they get empty backfield and they and get cute.

But good game

This week will be telling in how successful the NFL was in increasing the viewership of Thursday night football by simulcasting the first half of the season on CBS. Previously the viewership numbers for the NFL Network were pretty abysmal on Thursday nights, compared to the ratings they got anywhere else, so they hoped to get more people accustomed to watching the NFL on Thursdays by partnering with a broadcast network for the first half of the season. The training wheels are off this week and the games now will only be on the NFL network. Will be interesting to see how the viewership numbers compare to last year. They definitely won't get the numbers that they got when it was on CBS.
