I'll be the negative guy, 2 weeks ago they were concerned his shoulder might never wake up now an extension?

I hope this is a good thing, that they're convinced the shoulder is 100% now and while doing all that checkup stuff they realized this guy has several good years left in him?

Probably unrealistic but maybe 3/35 with the first year cap hit around 7-8m.

That sounds fair enough.

If it's awake, it's awake. I'm sure there are going to be significant injury protections available (Veldheer gets a $500K roster bonus (or something) for every game that he's active).

Mostly, I think that they're trying to get something done because (1) they don't have other legitimate options and more importantly because (2) what happens if the Cards win 11 games and win a playoff game or two? What's Palmer worth then? $20M per season? Even on a short-term deal?

What shows you he doesnt have much left? He threw for over 4k yards last year and was solid in both healthy games this year.
It is his age, he's old for the NFL. Early to mid thirties is when their bodies tell players their done. The nerve issue is a harbinger of things to come.

I think they're doing it now to solidify the QB position (Stanton is also signed thru 2015) going into the draft. They can start projecting immediately and get an impact pass rusher or two. It also just sets the rest of the team at ease and may impact any negotiations with other players.

Lock him up. I'm sure none of us want to go through the musical chairs game at the QB position again.

Talent has never been a question with Palmer and if he can continue to keep the TO's at a minimum, there aren't many better options that will come along.

Two years ago, there was talk of SD moving along from Rivers and now look at him/them. Like Rivers, CP has taken to the new staff has as well and I think he will continue at a high level as long as he's healthy.

Good that they are getting out front on this , I read on another site , someone posted Franchise Tag numbers and it listed QB at over 18 mil . so thats not a very good option for the Card's .

Palmer not looking for a big contract. Happy here and has already made over $100 million. IMO will get contract in range of $8 to $10 million per year. Also feel it will have lots of incentives. Will be very cap friendly for the Cards.

Yeah, but Palmer isn't negotiating the contract, his agent is. And if he is even competent at his job he will squeeze every penny out of the team that he can. (no knock on the agent, that is his job)

Palmer seems like a nice guy , but I have doubts that he is that nice .

Doubt those figures are brought to the table, and would be dismissed as a virtual insult... IMO.

I doubt Palmer will sign for less than the 14-15 mill range. I can see a lot of incentives involved but I'd be very surprised if the deal is for less than that range of pay.

The Cardinals signed him to a three year deal for cap reasons, but the contract automatically voids after two years.

Wrong. I remember when Manning was a Free Agent, and many thought maybe he would sign a $5 deal with incentives. OK. $14 - $16M will be the number, below the top tier, but still a good number.

He's not getting top tier money at his age and with his shoulder issues. The Cards won't bid against themselves.

If Palmer hits the open market, there would be enough suitors that we'd need to put forth a competitive offer. Buffalo, St Louis, and Tampa Bay immediately come to mind. But Palmer would ultimately re-sign here.

3 years 42mil +/- is what you all should expect.

That's INSANE money at his age and condition. Nobody will offer that kind of coin. In fact I'll be surprised if anyone (Cards included) offers 8 figures.

I'd go 2 yrs/$20m TOPS if I'm Keim. Unless of course he gets us to the promised land in February. Then we have a problem. :D

Huh? 8 Mil?

Yeah, no. He'll make 12 easy.

His age?? Seriously?? What of his age tells you he is tailing off?

Look at the guy, his stats, his fit and his toughness. He extends for three more seasons at 12 a year minimum.

It seems Palmer now has a good grasp of BA's offense and is a good QB for what BA wants to do. This means one thing, would there be a better option available if he left and I think not remotely. I do not want to see the whole Warner thing happen again with him getting on a plane and going somewhere else and sweating it out. His value is huge because there are no better options. QB is the most important position on the field and we have been winning with Palmer as part of the equation, he fits and should get paid to stay in my opinion

Crazy talk. QB is gold in this league. How much he has made in his career has little influence on his next contract.

I can see Palmer not asking for the moon. But he is still going to get paid in the 12 - 16 a year range.

Well worth it.

Then i hope you really like Drew Stanton or Logan Thomas.

$12-$16mil/season is the going rate for middle-of-the-pack starting QBs. Look at Alex Smith's deal, which pays him $16mil per season. He's not even worth half of that, but the market dictates your value, as much as you and I don't like it.

I think we are going to be pleasantly surprised when the extension gets done ($11-$12 million range). We are talking about a guy who isnt about the money, he wants to win. He gave up $5 million to go to the Raiders, he was willing to go be a back up for a winner then take the $10 million the Raiders wanted to pay him last year to get out of a bad situation, would’ve been a cut from the $13 million he was supposed to make. Once he was traded here he took even less 2yrs $16 million. There aren’t many other teams that are ready to win now and have a system that is a fit for him, maybe Houston is a QB away? He isnt getting any younger and neither is the Cards coaching staff, so he realizes there is an urgency to win now. I’m thinking he realizes AZ gives him the best opportunity to win and it seems like he has a great rapport and respect for BA and Tom Moore. Or maybe I’m just seeing this through Kool-Aid tinted glasses.

It's so weird. Carson Palmer is the last of the middle-class of QB contracts. Palmer's $8M per year average is the lowest non-rookie QB contract among starters. The next-highest average is Brady's $11.4M, and then everyone else is $13M per year or more.

You're right that $14M per season is going to be the starting point for his deal. Maybe he doesn't get as much on the open market, but the real negotiating point will be the guarantees.
