OH HELL NO! :trout:

100% agreed

the mcdonalds comment cracks me up - i was in the city with a phoenix person making their first visit up - took the train into midtown and mainly didn't leave there - i knew a nice deli I went when visiting my buddy who used to live in koreatown - the person travelling with me was bent on getting mcdonalds

of all the restaurants in NYC they wanted mcdonalds - i walked away in shame and we ended up eating separately

then again this is the same person who came back talking about how they say so much when we didn't leave midtown

Little Italy is nasty now.

Well, not sure I'd go that far... It's just not anything like it was 25-30 years ago... It's lost it's authenticity. So many of the old establishments sold out to newbies who have no connection to what Little Italy was all about. Hell, The Feast of San Genaro is a joke now... Brings tears to my eyes...
Arthur Ave. however has somehow held onto the past. I was there last summer. My brothers and I walked up and down the entire block. The aromas are all there. Still the absolute BEST place to get your Terranova Bread! Your fresh, homemade pastas... The butcher shops still have skinned lambs, goats, chicken and rabbit hanging in their windows... The pastry shops and cafe's are the best in the world!!!
Oh man - I need to be back there this summer!!!

Dude - Arthur Ave is not in NYC... It's in The Bronx... If you ever have the occasion to be in the NYC area, be sure to head over to the Bronx and Arthur Avenue... You won't regret it!

then throw in the markets - the italian market in south philly, reading terminal market - everything so fresh, so good - i don't know vegas but the markets in phoenix are pretty weak

Stop talking! You are making me homesick. Love the Reading Terminal Market! :)

exactly - so many good places like that - here's your menu, you won't be needing it tonight

i remember my dad was working a construction job in jersey - since it was so far away he was staying there during the week and comming home weekends - we went down to visit one weekend and went to the italian place he'd go - the owner saw us walk in and went nuts - was so glad to have the entire family he just kept bringing food and was bringing out lots of free stuff that he was expirementing with and wanted to get a feel for if we liked it - just awesome

My uncle used to go to a seafood place at the Jersey shore. Everytime he and the rest of his family walked in, the owner would come out and just bring a fabulous spread of seafood appetizers and whatnot. Carmen, the owner, was also Italian, and my Uncle Tom always had a great way with people. There was always something so warm about going there and the food was always fabulous.

Just reminiscing is all. :)

Am looking forward to going back for a visit in June, if the airline costs aren't through the roof.

Put your East Coast food orders in now!!! :) Herrs potato chips, soft pretzels and Yuengling, anyone?

heh - i'm up for that would want to swap the Herrs for some Utz Crab Chips and if you could preserve a water ice or a large mango gellati I'd be always in debt on a warm ol' arizona day

yep - community and food all very tied together

Absolutely!

That said, there would DEFINITELY be things from the Valley that I would miss should I ever move back east. I think you just have to appreciate the things you have where you are. Of course, that doesn't mean you can't miss things from where you've been. The bread and soup I had in Ireland was better than any other I've ever had. I'll miss it until I go back and miss it again when I leave.

Mmmm, mango. Anyone wonder why I can get awesome produce from Mexico in Chicago, but couldn't find it in Arizona? Was I just not looking for it?

Crap. When is that place closing ... I mean, Yankees stadium? I gotta get there one more time, though it wasn't originally on my agenda.

Sorry to highjack this thread, but, hell, everyone else does it everywhere else so it's all good. :)

Memorial Day, I think. I wanted to get to Yankee Stadium as well. So Archer Avenue is a good idea.

agree with that as well - there are some really good things here - but in all honesty some food items aren't on the same level
