The shortest path to being competitive is a decent defense and protecting Kyler Murray. I have a tough time believing Rivera isn't a safe way to ensure one of those things happens. You can argue that Kugler helps with the other.

Totally agree he’s at the worst a solid DC, which would be a huge improvement to the trash we’ve saw for the last 2 seasons.

Plus he would likely bring some nastiness & no tolerance for taking plays off on his defense.

I wish we could hire him right now as our DC. I'd pay him a few mil a year as well.

He's a damn good DC but he runs a 4/3 defense. We can't keep switching back & forth imo. If he was willing to keep this defense a 3/4 then I would be fine with him as DC? Definitely an improvement over what we have now.

He would be fine here as a 3/4 DC, doubt he would settle for a DC job right now though? Like a previous poster said. "He'll probably wait to see what happens with Nagy in Chicago"? After All, he was the DC there, that's what propelled him to get the Panthers HC position.

I disagree. You need to find the shortest path to an average defense. The shortest path is a sound scheme and the ability to implement it. Rivera has a history of being able to do both. Vance does not.

So why did Panthers owner David Tepper decide to fire Rivera with just four games left to play? Why not let him coach out the season and then fire him after Week 17?

Tepper was asked those exact questions on Tuesday and he didn't try to duck them. During an interview with the Panthers official website and a later interview with local media, Tepper gave a thorough explanation for why he decided to let Rivera go with just four weeks left in the 2019 season.

"I'm not going to start a search and not tell Ron Rivera I'm starting a search," Tepper told reporters. "I'm not going to disrespect him."

The owner's decision basically boiled down to two things: He wanted to start interviewing candidates now and he didn't want to be interviewing those people behind Rivera's back (check out CBS Sports Senior Writer Jonathan Jones' take on the Panthers' plan here).

If Rivera desires to continue his coaching career, isn't it better for him to get a jump start before the season's end and the playoffs begin. His firing was imminent the day Tepper bought the team. It will be quite interesting to see any differences in play calling by the O now that his influence is gone.

I wonder about the demand for his services level. I stick him in the same category as Dan Quinn, Vic Fangio, Doug Marrone, and other D skewed HCs. I do not believe he fits the mold of the new era HCs. Maybe if he is willing to bow to Jerry he gets a gig.

I think it will be there. I will be absolutely shocked if he isn't a HC somewhere in the league next year.

I do not think that he can. Unless he can find a way out of being "contractually obligated" to keep that statue.
