The Carolina Panthers may have a little competition for their return man.

According to Mike Kaye of The Charlotte Observer, there is mutual interest between the Panthers and free-agent running back Raheem Blackshear—the team's leading kickoff returner from each of the past three years.

Kaye, however, does note that the 26-year-old rusher is also drawing interest elsewhere.

Blackshear cracked into the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Buffalo Bills in the spring of 2022. He'd find his way to Carolina later that September, when he was signed off Buffalo's practice squad.

Since then, the Panthers have utilized Blackshear as their primary return specialist, particularly on kickoffs. The 5-foot-9, 190-pounder amassed 23 punt returns and 66 kick returns from 2022 to 2024—with averages of 8.7 yards and 26.3 yards per attempt, respectively.

Carolina does not have a clear replacement for Blackshear, who was not tendered by the team ahead of free agency. The only current members of the roster who registered at least one kick return or one punt return for the team last season are wide receivers Xavier Legette (four kickoffs) and David Moore (two punts).
