Not surprising. I think he was fed up with that organization for getting TO and didn't want to go through another year. IMO Roma was his guy and I think it may have come down to Jones wanting other things especially at QB.

Two-time SB champion Parcells retires from coaching

IRVING, Texas -- Bill Parcells retired from coaching Monday, leaving the Dallas Cowboys after four seasons and ending a stellar career that featured three Super Bowl appearances and two championships.

The announcement came 15 days after the Cowboys' season ended with a heartbreaking playoff loss in Seattle. He'd been at his office nearly every day since, and there were other indications that the 65-year-old coach was returning for a fifth year in Dallas and 20th as an NFL head coach.
"I am retiring from coaching football," Parcells said in a statement. "I want to thank Jerry Jones and Stephen Jones for their tremendous support over the last four years. Also, the players, my coaching staff and others in the support group who have done so much to help. Dallas is a great city and the Cowboys are an integral part of it. I am hopeful that they are able to go forward from here."

The announcement came in a morning e-mail. There was no immediate statement from Jones, the team owner, although one was planned for later in the day. There were no immediate plans for a news conference.
"I am in good health and feel lucky to have been able to coach in the NFL for an extended period of time," Parcells said. "I leave the game and the NFL with nothing but good feelings and gratitude to all the players, coaches and other people that have assisted me in that regard."
Parcells won two Super Bowls with the Giants. He came to Dallas four seasons ago energized by the challenge of restoring glory to "America's Team." He went 34-32 and definitely left the Cowboys better than he found them, but his tenure ultimately may be remembered for the lack of a playoff victory.

His teams went 0-2 in the postseason. Dallas appeared headed to a breakthrough win this month in Seattle, but Pro Bowl quarterback Tony Romo botched the hold on a short field goal with a little more than a minute left and the Cowboys lost 21-20. They lost four of their last five games, including the final three, after holding a two-game division lead in December.

Dallas hasn't won a playoff game since 1996, easily the longest skid in the history of the franchise that's been to a record eight Super Bowls.
Parcells' legacy with the Cowboys can be framed this way: Instead of joining Tom Landry, Jimmy Johnson and Barry Switzer as coaches who led them to championships, he leaves lumped with Chan Gailey and Dave Campo.

What does he have more of, Super bowl rings, or retirements?

My exact feelings when I read the thread too.

i don't think so...jones will look for a sexy pick...i don't think he wants someone who wears sweaters like grimm does...regardless of how capable he might be.....first rumor will be bringing jimmy j back...and then a host of usual suspects...

Parcells just might show up somewhere again. Maybe a GM or maybe HC. But he just doesn't seem done with Football..., just the Cowboys and Jones and Terrell Owens .

For me, this is another reason to wish Terrell Owens would just go away.

Parcells = good for football
Owens = Bad for football

I look at this and think that the only candidate left would be Ron Rivera. The downside of him going to the Cowboys is that they just spent the last two years upgrading their personell to fit a 3-4 and Rivera runs the tampa two. Personell wise their defensive tackles are useless and linebackers are too big and slow. I guess they could try Dick Lebeau when he gets walked out of Pittsburgh as he would be a guy with experience and also have a system that fits their personell. Just when Cowboy fans were starting to become obnoxious again, I love it.

No way in hell Carroll takes this job. The reason that he left the NFL was because of players like TO and the pressure of coaching in the NFL. The expectations that would be put on him in Dallas would be the main reason that he would not take it. Not to mention the fact that he will probably head into the next college season with the preseason #1 team.

They still have some talented coaches to chose from, IMO.

BTW, I think Parcells leaving might spell the end of Romo's cinderella story. The whole reason he was even in the league long enough to get his shot was because of Parcells, I'd wager there will be a QB competition in Dallas next year.

Dallas takes a bit step backwards IMO. I think there has been enough stories about how Parcells is such a HARD@ss and how that helped keep the team egos in check. Now your going to bring in another coach? Wow. I think there is no way that Dalls doesn't take a step back here next year.
