I agree Hookem. How fantastic would it be to trade down w/ Dallas and take

1-Branden Albert - OT/OG
2a-Trevor Laws - DE
2b-Justin King - CB
3-Beau Bell - ILB
4-Kendall Langford - DE
5-Tyrell Johnson - S
6-Vince Hall - ILB
7-???

If we could pick up an additional 3rd rounder I would really like to go after Tracy Porter-CB, Josh Johnson-QB, DeMario Pressley-DE.

I like those first 3 picks, upgrades both Lines, and a speedy Corner, that's awesome! :)

We're going to take an RB in this draft. Graves has been really, really clear about that.

Well Daisy, here you go...

1-Branden Albert-OT/OG
2a-Trevor Laws-DE
2b-Justin King-CB
3-Kendall Langford-DE
4-Tashard Choice-RB
(I think that he is one of the better football players and a much better running back than athlete. Could be very productive.)
5-Tyrell Johnson-S
6-Vince Hall-ILB
7-Kyle Wright-QB

I think this guy in the 6th might be worth a look.

Orlando Scandrick CB

Strengths:
Adequate size and bulk...Outstanding timed speed...A good athlete..Hips are very fluid and he flips them well to turn and run...Has quick feet...Good ball skills...Can also contribute on special teams...Is tough and physical...Has a ton of experience.

Weaknesses:
Inconsistent and doesn't always play up to his physical tools...Doesn't get a great jam at the line...Just an average tackler...Can be blocked....Did not pick off a lot of passes...Was not really tested that much...Questionable instincts and awareness.

Notes:
Was a three-year starter..Ran the second fastest forty time for a corner at the '08 Scouting Combine...Has a knack for blocking kicks and could also work as a return man...Press / Man cover guy with excellent triangle numbers...Really put his name on the map with great workouts...Has starting potential and just might be a steal.

Another guy I like in the late rounds.

Chad Rinehart OL / G

Strengths:
Terrific size and a big frame...Tough and physical...A decent athlete with excellent feet...Smart...Displays good power...Stout at the point of attack and gets a great push...Does a nice job in space and can get to the second level..Has some upside.

Weaknesses:
Did not play against top competition...Need to play with better leverage and keep his pad level down...Displays poor footwork and hand use and is still raw when it comes to his technique...Has some trouble with quickness..Has lapses in intensity.

Notes:
Could also project outside to tackle at the next level...Redshirted in '03 and then went on to become a four-year starter at left tackle..Has all the physical tools and most of his flaws can be corrected...One of this drafts elite small school prospects.

Cromartie is a first round athlete, however he is not a first round football player. He is another example of a player with great physical skills being over hyped and overvalued even though he is a mediocre football player. Cromartie is a great value in the second or third round but he is type of player that gets the head coach fired when his GM takes him in the first round. Not many teams can afford to wait 3 years for a first round pick to contribute like one.

bg7brd, what source are you pulling those evaluations from?

And for the non-draftniks like me, it would be useful to know which team those players played for. Thanks.

What is this based on? Did you watch a lot of Tennessee State game last season, or something?

He stood out as a man among boys at the Senior Bowl, both during workouts and during the game.

I know that everyone agrees that we need depth at the Dockett/Smith DE position, and I'm wondering if anyone thinks that Alan Branch could play that position?

He probably can, but the question is whether you want him to. He's not as athletic as either Smith or Dockett, so you're giving up some pass rush ability in the kind of 3-4 the Cards employ. But more importantly, you're keeping Gabe Watson on the field more than you really want to.

Yes Daisy, I have a closet full of film on DRC and his games at Tennessee St. I have never claimed to be a scout, so a comment like yours is a bit asinine as most of us, including yourself, take the bits and pieces that we have and make our assuptions.

Were I get mine from? Well, I watched the senior bowl and agree that DRC does have the physical tools to play in the NFL. This is why I said that DRC is a "first round athlete." However, when looking into scouting profiles and assessments, here is what else I found.

"Has faced marginal competition and was not regularly matched up vs. NFL-caliber receivers. Does not play physical and does not like contact...Would fit best as a man-cover corner. Has a lot of upside to improve"
-PFW 2008 Draft Guide. Ranked as the 6th best corner in the draft.

"Overconfidence isn't considered a flaw at cornerback, but he can be a bit reckless and is prone to penalties for pass interference and holding...Transitions with no wasted motion and has the flexibility, balance and height to cover up some of his technique flaws...A coaching staff will need to provide guidance and patience to eliminate the bad habits he developed playing at an unequal level of competition, but the reward could be a PRo Bowl-caliber finished product."
-Lindy's Pro Football Draft. Ranked as the 3rd best cornerback.

"Not very physical and has to get stronger...Did not play against top competition...Still raw and will need to work on his technique and footwork...Needs to put some time in at the training table and in the weight room but has the talent to make the NFL leap."
-Scott Wright. NFL Draft Countdown.com. Ranked 2nd best cornerback.

So from all this information here is what I gathered to make my comments and evaluations about DRC. From watching him at the SeniorBowl, I saw that he was a great athlete. From the 3 published sources above my impression of his unnatural athleticsm was validated. I was concerned that he would be a little raw from playing in a conference of lesser atheletes, since his athletiscm would make up for any lack in technique. This was also pointed out by the above sources. Lindy's pointed out that DRC is prone to PI and pass interference penalties which would point to a lack of technique. NFL draft countdown points out that he is still very raw.

So after all of this I concluded that to take a raw athlete who needs to improve technique and physical strength to play the second most difficult positition in the NFL w/ all of the rules against him at the #16 spot in the first round of the NFL would be a bit of a reach and we might get better value trading down or taking another player.

about DRC, he did excel against the competition he faced.

As a soph he allowed 1.86 ypa
As a junior he picked off 6 and allowed 3.64 ypa.
As a senior, he blocked 4 punts.

He allowed 3.85 ypa during his career.
Opponents completion percentage during his career was under 35%

The last guy to put up those numbers.. Aeneas Williams.

So you haven't seen him play accept for the one game where he stood out among higher competition (the best seniors in the country, mostly from DIV 1 schools)? I mean, he's not physical in the way that Antrel Rolle or Quentin Jammer are, which is what they mean. When I hear "good athlete but not a football player", I think of guys like Tom Knight who had great measurables but never produced on the field. Rogers-Cromartie has produced on the field.

There isn't a question of whether the guy's a football player. He absolutely is. But how can you say:

Cromartie is a first round athlete, however he is not a first round football player. He is another example of a player with great physical skills being over hyped and overvalued even though he is a mediocre football player. Cromartie is a great value in the second or third round but he is type of player that gets the head coach fired when his GM takes him in the first round. If you've never watched him play? You sound pretty sure about it, for someone that's only seen 4 quarters of play from the guy, and those 4 quarters were outstanding.

Don't believe everything you read.

No, but I do believe 3 published and professional sources. Have you seen extensive game footage on DRC? If you haven't seen tapes of him playing all four years of college then you really haven't.

"As far as "When I hear "good athlete but not a football player", I think of guys like Tom Knight who had great measurables but never produced on the field. Rogers-Cromartie has produced on the field."

This is where you and I get crossed up. When I say that someone is a football player, I am saying that he plays a physical style that translates to the NFL. A football player is a strong tackler, has good strength at point of attack for his position, and can hold up against the offensive player he is matched up to. Cromartie struggles in these areas. He is not strong in body compared to others at his position nor does he show the physical makeup to handle larger receivers or bring down NFL runningbacks. DRC has all the physical tools of an athlete (speed, agility, acceleration) but, at this time, very few of the tools that comprise a football player (toughness, strength, agression). It doesn't mean that he can't develop them, but that takes time.

As far as never seeing him play other than at the senior bowl, you are right, I haven't. Have you? For someone who is challenging my certainty about DRC, I haven't heard any prevailing evidence otherwise. This is why I read and compare the analysis of multiple sources before I interject an opinion in these matters. I like DRC and think that he will be a very good pro but I think that out of the 16 best college players in the country that there are better alternatives for us to help this team. If we could trade down and take in the later 20's or early 2nd round, he would be at the top of my list.

You know that Wheatly has Kenny King's wrists, don't you? His bones are super-brittle.

Wheatley suffered a right wrist dislocation in '03, undergoing three surgeries over three years to repair the injury (including 2005, when he sat out the season and was granted a medical redshirt). In September '06, he broke the metal plate in his wrist but continued to play (he had another surgery after the season). In '07 he missed the Buffaloes' final three games because of a hairline fracture in his foot. He also left games early in '06 (concussion) and '07 (knee sprain) but didn't miss any more time as a result.

I know that third-round picks don't have much value to the Cards' organization lately, but I'd rather take a chance on a guy like Terrell Thomas or Jack Williams with that pick then waste it on a guy like Wheatly.

I do know about that. I'd be willing to take the chance. I think he'll do well in the NFL.

T. Thomas is S-L-O-W. He'll be a safety before too long, IMO.

No way mcfadden goes to the falcons, they already have a guy just like that in norwood and Connor dosent go before Gholston. Im not a big groves fan ill take DRC instead. Like the rest though

you realize that norwood is undersized and that mcfadden is considered an excellent inside runner. no team would pass on mcfadden b/c they had norwood on their roster. not even the cardinals.

IMO, the Dolphins draft Mcfadden. Brown hasn't proven anything and he hasn't played a full season since he was drafted. I can see the Dolphins drafting Jake Long. The Dolphins OL isn't that good. Then again, when you are picking first in the draft everything is a need. So there is really no wrong answer.

I like Pirah draft except for the #4 pick. IMO, a team shouldn't waste a draft pick on a punter, when the team needs defensive players.
