Nebraska men’s basketball named Pat Monahgan an assistant coach on Monday evening. Monaghan will replace assistant Adam Howard, who is set to go to the LSU Tigers. Monaghan most recently worked as an assistant at Wyoming.
He also worked with Green Bay, helping them become a powerhouse in the Horizon League. They went 18-14 in the 2023-24 season, after going 3-29 the previous year. He has also worked at Southern Illinois, where he spent four seasons. Southern Illinois compiled a 67-55 record during that time.
Monaghan‘s also had other stops as an assistant coach at Milwaukee and Minnesota State. In addition, he was able to serve in an operations role at Loyola Chicago. Nebraska basketball head coach Fred Hoiberg talked about the skills Monaghan will bring to Lincoln.
“Pat is a well-rounded coach who is an excellent teacher, strong in skill development and a relentless recruiter. In talking with other coaches who have worked with Pat over the years, the things they bring up are his work ethic and his ability to connect with players. He’s been a part of building successful programs at different levels and has experience in the Midwest at both the Division I and junior college levels. I am excited to have him join the Husker basketball coaching staff.”
Monaghan is certainly a hire with plenty of basketball experience at multiple levels. His diverse basketball background should help a Nebraska men’s squad that is looking to take the next step. The Huskers struggled last season, finishing 21-14, including a 7-13 conference record.
