Really surprising news, and being met with a lot of suspicion. If there's a scandal, I hope it's not one that endangers the program. I hope it's not a situation like Kush where the school ends up honoring him years later and many wish they'd had more time.

It'll be fascinating to see who the permanent replacement is, though. It's got to be one of the top jobs in the country, with tradition, good weather, renovated facilities, etc.

The article says the resignation is not related to the current investigation. There has always been a behind the doors rift between Love and Murphy as he is regarded as a hot head and jerk, maybe Murphy's resigning to take care of some of his personal affairs (he divorced his wife during the season IIRC).

I embraced the era of Bobby Winkles and later Jim Brock that produced national championships. This made it hard for me to embrace Pat Murphy whose teams never won one. However, I must admit his resignation came as a shock. Although I feel he would never bring a national championship to ASU I have mixed feelings. I just hope the ASU baseball program does not suffer as a result. ASU has enough problems with the Erickson era in football.

Has anyone heard any names of possible replacements? We should be able to get almost anyone we want, so hopefully there's a nice list building up right now.

It's going to play out like the UA basketball coach search. Too late to get a guy now with school in mid year so a interm will coach this year. So we have a year to scout and lure a to notch guy. Are their any good coaches near the end of their contract?

Lisa Love is far too good an AD to not have a very, very good reason for this to happen. Murphy did SOMETHING to warrant this.

From an outsider I don't know if she is that good. Didn't she extend Koetter a year before firing him, then sign Erickson to big money, and now this?

It must've been because of their disagreements in the past... If there was something she wouldn't have lied, you're right. This makes her look far worse.

Maybe Murphy did deserve to be fired. If so, why did Love lie about it?
Maybe she couldn't say anything because of the ongoing NCAA investigation.

I'm sure there's still a lot of info that will come out so I'm taking the wait and see approach before calling for LL's job.

We need a coach that is established..who is Mike Batesole, where is he from? What has he done? I favor Clint Myers from the girls softball team..Hecould set them up with an amazing coach, and take the Devils to the next level legally...

One would assume it's either money (400k is a lot of coin for a non-revenue sport) or the NCAA investigation. No AD in this climate is going to shell out a bunch of money unless it's completely justified.

Yes and no. Yes, she extended Koetter a year before firing, but any reasonable person would note she was under the gun to do something. If you were going to keep him -- and no one was sure -- you couldn't let another year of recruiting go by with rumors of him being gone the next. It was a Catch 22 for Love.

No, she did not give Erickson big money. His first year I think he netted around 600K, and it got bumped up after the first year. I still think he's about 5th or 6th in the conference in salary. ASU is about dead middle in terms of how much they pay assistants. Erickson is costing ASU probably a hair more than if they had given some newbie his first shot.

Well, that's not good. I'd guess that baseball probably gets hit pretty hard and the rest of the programs get off fine. The NCAA will probably force a couple more "resignations" within the athletic department as well.

Would not be surprised if baseball is given the death penalty.

That would just be wonderful...I guess I'll use my free admission for baseball games this year. These are not going to be a very memorable four years at ASU for me. :bang:

But I tend to agree with, "if you aint cheating, you aint trying" ...but you don't get caught, damn it!

What really p***** me off is that the NCAA is coming down hard on the ASU baseball team but USC's football program is so squeaky clean. Joe McKnight is in the news for driving around in a Range Rover that he admitted belongs to "my baby's momma's boss". The guy works for some investment firm or something like that. The NCAA needs to come down on them too or ASU should hire some lawyers to get them off their backs. Still waiting to see what happens to USC's basketball program after the Floyd/Mayo debacle, I guess the NCAA is taking a break from the case.
