This is the most perplexing deal I've ever had to assess on a personal perspective.
On one hand, I always HATED Shaq (the player) when he was with the Lakers and while that despise dwindled some when he went to Miami, I'd be remiss to say my opinion of him changed when he left LA.
Secondly, when it comes to my all-time favorite Suns, Shawn Marion is in my top 4-5.
That said... The deal itself on a talent perspective is even more perplexing to me.
One side of the coin, Marion's leaving at the end of the season and I just can't see the Heat dropping the coin to bring him back, nor can I see him wanting to be on a team that's in rebuilding mode at this point in his career, which essentially will make this deal Shaq for Banks, which in my opinion is idiotic at best, highway robbery at worst. Shaq may not be the same player he was at age 33, let alone 25, but he's still heaps more valuable than anything Marcus Banks brings to the table.
Looking at Shaq, the obvious question is how a slow, prodding defensive guy who wouldn't know a fast tempo offense from a fast food restaurant is going to fit in to D'Antoni's offense. Yet, my question is how much are the Suns going to benefit from the deal? Yes, Shaq's contract over the next two years is horrid. Yes, Shaq at 35 is getting no younger. However, I think a motivated Shaq gives the Suns a legitimate chance to win in May and June, when the games count most. He's a proven winner in the post-season, he gives the Suns the most fearsome front-court in the NBA (IMO). For those wondering if he'll be motivated, let's look at it this way-- he knows his Hall of Fame career is near the end of the line. He knows this may very well be his last chance at one final title. He went from a team with NO chance at a title to a team with a very logical chance at one. He also gets to play with a talented group of players where he won't have to carry the team on his broad shoulders. At this point, he can do what he seems to do best.. rebound and block shots.
As I said, he's no spring chicken.. But this team's not built for the future anyhow, and if he winds up being the difference maker in the Suns FINALLY winning a title, the money and this trade are worth every penny... especially when you consider the fact that the deal is ultimately going to be Shaq for Marcus Banks.
