Shaq plus Miami 1st this year
for
Marion, Banks, ATL pick.

If this is the case, I'm all for it. We weren't winning it all the way we were. This at lease gives us a little run. Who know what Shaq's presence down low would do for Amare.

Give me the ping pong balls.

Now that's more like it. That's going to be a top five pick most likely.

I hope your right JC and we do get the heats pick in the trade it would be a lot better then the hawks pick this year thats for sure. By the way is anyone else having trouble sleeping tonight I keep wondering about tommorow if i'll log on to this site and see that trade is final and went down...

Yeah I am pretty tense right now. I might go play a game of NBA 08 on my PS3 with Shaq instead of Marion and see how I do.

Marion is all universe in that game though. :)

There is no way the Suns are getting the pick from Miami. Only Isiah and Sarver would give away such valuable picks.

BTW that 2010 pick that Seattle has coming their way is looking pretty nice for them.

This is the most perplexing deal I've ever had to assess on a personal perspective.

On one hand, I always HATED Shaq (the player) when he was with the Lakers and while that despise dwindled some when he went to Miami, I'd be remiss to say my opinion of him changed when he left LA.

Secondly, when it comes to my all-time favorite Suns, Shawn Marion is in my top 4-5.

That said... The deal itself on a talent perspective is even more perplexing to me.

One side of the coin, Marion's leaving at the end of the season and I just can't see the Heat dropping the coin to bring him back, nor can I see him wanting to be on a team that's in rebuilding mode at this point in his career, which essentially will make this deal Shaq for Banks, which in my opinion is idiotic at best, highway robbery at worst. Shaq may not be the same player he was at age 33, let alone 25, but he's still heaps more valuable than anything Marcus Banks brings to the table.

Looking at Shaq, the obvious question is how a slow, prodding defensive guy who wouldn't know a fast tempo offense from a fast food restaurant is going to fit in to D'Antoni's offense. Yet, my question is how much are the Suns going to benefit from the deal? Yes, Shaq's contract over the next two years is horrid. Yes, Shaq at 35 is getting no younger. However, I think a motivated Shaq gives the Suns a legitimate chance to win in May and June, when the games count most. He's a proven winner in the post-season, he gives the Suns the most fearsome front-court in the NBA (IMO). For those wondering if he'll be motivated, let's look at it this way-- he knows his Hall of Fame career is near the end of the line. He knows this may very well be his last chance at one final title. He went from a team with NO chance at a title to a team with a very logical chance at one. He also gets to play with a talented group of players where he won't have to carry the team on his broad shoulders. At this point, he can do what he seems to do best.. rebound and block shots.

As I said, he's no spring chicken.. But this team's not built for the future anyhow, and if he winds up being the difference maker in the Suns FINALLY winning a title, the money and this trade are worth every penny... especially when you consider the fact that the deal is ultimately going to be Shaq for Marcus Banks.

Broken is the default position for 360s, if they're actually functioning, thats only a temporary glitch.

The lakers raised the stakes with gasol, and we just said alright "all in". Are we bluffing or not we shall find out in months.

I do understand it though, in that, I'm surprised I haven't seen it anywhere else, we won't have to double duncan/bynum anymore (assuming the big fella is healthy).

no way they swap us first rounders. i was hoping for that, but why would a rebuilding team give up that pick for a worse one? just for a sal-dump? not a pick that high.

Well the problem on my end is that if it is in fact Shaq for marion + banks I won't be watching shaq take the floor because I won't watch the suns anymore, period.

Echo that. My tix for 2/24 and 3/31 will go out with the trash. This is a move that's (quite literally) making me nauseous.

Are people absolutely forgetting how we lose games? This is unbelievable--this entire board spends 4 YEARS complaining about how we don't have any rebounding or inside presence, and here it comes, and they still aren't happy? Inconceivable!

The problem is that Marion is a better rebounder, better scorer and probably better defender then Shaq at this point in his career. If Shaq really doesn't have anything left in the tank, you basically traded Marion away for nothing.

Here is to hoping that Shaq's inside presence somehow improves this teams team defense and rebounding. Basically, if you take individual statistics out of the equation that is what your banking on. Your banking that Shaq makes you a better in Team rebounding and Team defense. We all will find out shortly enough.

I would say no because the league then has to review the deal and approve it. So I would say at the earliest the Suns next game.

Let's face it, Marion's rebounds are garbage rebounds. Come on. He gets them because he's consistently in the right place at the right time. The reason we get outrebounded is because fundamentally, other teams have players that can get position better than any of our guys, including Marion. It's just the way it is. Shaq, whatever his faults, is a pretty good rebounder, and Tony Parker won't have his way driving the lane like he usually does with us. Tell me you disagree with that.

I agree.

He can trigger the break and improve our defensive rebounding.

His PHYSICAL PRESENCE in the middle will make driving to the rim difficult. He just a roadblock, even without moving much.

He can be effective at the Suns pace. Consider this. In two games against the Suns this year, at the Suns pace, Shaq's numbers were:
21.5 pts, 10.5 boards, 4 assists, 2 blocks.

Shaq's passing has been highly underrated. Amare will benefit from that in a huge way.

With Nash feeding him, Shaq can still draw the double-team (which Marion could not). Ask Amare how that will help.

Remember the Showtime Lakers when Kareem was old. Kareem would rebound and outlet and 4 Lakers would streak down the court. Kareem would make it back in time to run the half court offense if the break didn't pan out. It worked.

The real question is whether DAntoni can adjust to it.

Wow, JC, great post.

Kurt Thomas couldn't run with the fast break either, but that doesn't stop everyone from STILL wanting him back.

Let's face it, Marion's rebounds are garbage rebounds. Come on. He gets them because he's consistently in the right place at the right time.

That's precisely why they are not garbage rebounds. It take tremendous skill to do what he does at his size and rebound so well. Statistically, he is already one of the best rebounders at his position and size in NBA history. ESPN compared his numbers all time factoring his size and position and they stack up.

The reason we get outrebounded so often has more to do with our running system. If your system is designed to have guys cherry pick...errrr....run down the court on the wings, you can't possibly crash the boards. You can't do both.

No doubt Shaq should take up realestate in the paint which should prevent much of the easy buckets the Suns give up. That is the hope anyway. The last few games I saw Shaq play, little guys were driving by him like he wasn't there. Let's hope we don't see that guy in a Suns uniform.

I was just about to say that the Suns should ask for the Heat's pick this year just to see how badly Miami wants to unload Shaq. Swapping the Heat pick with the Hawks pick is not a bad idea, but with our luck, right after the trade the Hawks will self-destruct and the Heat will go on a long winning streak.
