Id say it's been a very good offseason i'm a little upset we lost boldin, dansby but we did find good replacments on defense with Rhodes and Porter. By the way has anyone heard anything on us signing another wr to replace boldin? Thanks

I must say it is nice to see that we at least had a plan this off season, knowing the things that might happen. I think Warner took them by surprise, but this organization is definately moving in the right direction.

To all you Dansby lovers out there.

We were better off not signing a player who was too soft fit the 34 ILB position to a long term deal. I much prefer trying to find our "David Harris" to replace the "Jonathan Vilma" on our defense than be stuck with a pro bowl caliber player in the right scheme who is only average in the 34.

I don't know about a perfect offseason but they have done a nice job of climbing out the hole they were in.

Thats thinking scared IMO. I would much rather have a 22yr old beast with a GREAT work ethic, team-first mentality and terrific leader coming into his own than a 30 year old me-first mercenary for hire with two bum shoulders that is bound to start slowing down soon. Especially when the young guy will cost 1/4 of the older one.
Why is Dansby aways being called out as me-first player? 95% of the league are me-first players. Because they want paid and earned the right to hit free agency makes them me first? Boldin, DD,Warner, Fitz are all me first players as well. I never heard Dansby complain once about his contract. He always accepted the franchise tag, didn't bad mouth the organization, and was the team leader on the defense.

I dunno about this. I am actually pretty excited that I get to personally watch up close (I live in Fort Lauderdale) whether Dansby was playing hurt and practicing to make that contract and will regress back to the tendencies he had early in his career. I have always personally suspected that it the tough love and money that motivated him and don't think it was a coincidence that he played his best (and most) these last two years.

And I get to watch/find out if he has the work ethic in Miami of all places! Don't underestimate the temptations for a rich, african american, multi millionaire on the glamour team in South Beach my friends.

Thats a 40 million dollar gamble as a Cardinal fan, I am glad I have no stakes in.

yes, I agree

people generally bad mouth former players, but Cbus this is the same guy who said Weatherspoon is already better than Dansby...whatever.

Los will be missed & hopefully we can find someone who can package all his skills together in that player.

all things considered i agree....never a great rolle fan....whether it was next year or this year we had to face the warner situation as he was not going to last forever and as far as dansby goes...the fall-off may not be as great as one might think...no i don't think i am whistling in the graveyard it could have been a whole lot worse and fortunatley it is a deep defensive draft

I think that Dansby is a mercenary, and a fantastic athlete. I really think that Sean Weatherspoon is going to be a great player, but he isn't in the same league as Dansby yet. People forget that Dansby is not a natural fit in a 3-4, but still churned out some very productive seasons for Arizona because he is so athletic. The thing that I like about Weatherspoon is that he has the attitude of an interior linebacker along with being very athletic. Finally, Weatherspoon, in my opinion, could be a Ray Lewis type defensive leader for the Cardinals that Dansby just never was.

huh?

Weatherspoon is already better than Dansby and I think Lee could be this year's Brian Cushing. There's a very good chance one of them will be a Cardinal next year.

The truth of the matter is that for as great as Dansby was in the GB playoff game, he still had 1 pick, 1 FF and 1 sack in the regular season last year. Losing that shouldn't kill any D.

interesting! we're going to find out just how good dansby was. I don't agree at all that this team's current defense, on paper, is better than last year!

Perfect offseason? No

Good offseason considering the variables? Yes

Losing Dansby will suck in the short run, but he can be replaced with a cheaper player that won't stop our ability to resign veterans that matter more like Dockett and Fitzgerald. I really like the Hadnot signing, I expect him to steal a starting job from one our interior lineman. Rhodes is at least as good as Rolle, possibly better. Derek Anderson could thrive with our receivers. Porter is an upgrade from the albatross of Berry/Okeafor.

Finally getting rid of Boldin is a blessing, as I think we can get similar production between Breaston and Doucet and adding a 3rd rounder is icing on the cake. All-in-all I think this shows that our new found faith in management is justified, even though I expect us to take a step back in the short run. The Cardinals Super Bowl team was just not built to last long with so many older veterans, and the retooling so far has been impressive.

Agree with you here.

The thing I am most happy with is that the FO is pro active this offseason and not just sitting around thinking about moves, but making things happen. Not perfect, but filled areas of need so we can go to the draft with a more focused game plan.

Watching what we do for a kicker will make an impact. If they bring in Feely before the draft that would be big.

Icing on the cake with a strong draft.

Very interesting off season so far and I am looking for excitement as we near the draft.

If there's a misspelling it would be Canadian. Canadien, defines the early French settlers before the English arrived... We'll stick with both... ;)

A Very Positive Start

What caused my rant early in the week was the thought that for a second year in a row the Cardinals would not add a bona fide edge pass rusher via free agency or trade. When Whiz was claiming he was happy with the young players and the depth at the OLB position, and when there seemed to be no urgency in signing Joey Porter and he was headed off to meet with the Redksins, I was feeling "completely frustrated."

I was also feeling frustrated about having to wait so long to know what was going on with QB Charlie Whitehurst. I am not sure if we will ever know what changed the tide on that one. My guess is that the Cardinals weren't sure what kind of money to commit to Whitehurst and probably thought at the beginning they could sign him to a deal similar to what Chris Carr got with the 49ers. When the Seahawks got involved and upped the ante, the Cardinals got cold feet and moved on.

I admit, that despite some leeriness about his having never played in a game yet, I was excited about Whitehurst, because of his big arm and potential. The way I figured it was that if Matt Leinart struggled this year, Whitehurst could emerge as the bona fide QBOF and it would have only cost us a 3rd rounder.

However, I was delighted to learn that my interpretation of Whiz's stance on the OLB/DE position was incorrect. What I perceived as a lack of priority and urgency was actually the opposite, because not only did he go out and sign Joey Porter, we have recently learned that he tried to trade for the Browns' Kamerion Wimbley.

Whiz is again proving---even though he's difficult to read at times---that these are not the same old Cardinals.

Now that we have a bona fide edge pass rusher, we are starting to look and more and more prolific on defense. The thing is too that Porter will not only help the young OLBers (Brown, Davis, Washington and Baggs) improve, he will actually help the offense improve. I remarked last year a few times that the Cardinals' tackles were having a tough time adjusting to the better edge rushers, because the Cardinals did not have any to line up against them in practice. This year they do, and the others should get better.

As I've said, adding Porter is a huge psychological boost for this defense, as was adding FS Kerry Rhodes via the trade with the Jets. Two outstanding moves right there.

I also love the signing of Rex Hadnot, who gives the Cardinals a player who can win one of the guard spots, and can save them a roster spot by being able to play center if called upon.

The re-signings of Jeremy Bridges and Anthony Becht were excellent moves as well. We know Bridges can be a solid option at LT if neede there and he too can play guard. Becht chose not to sign elsewhere and remains a key player on the offense as a good blocking TE.

I think QB Derek Anderson is the best the Cardinals could do in free agency. And if he responds as well as I think he will to Whiz's coaching he has two years to make a case for being the QBOF. He's still young, and has had one very good year to hang his hat on.

The only signing I think most of us are curious about is of LB Paris Lenon. When I learned that Larry Foote was going to sign as a backup with the Stellers I was happy that the Cardinals at least signed someone instead. Then it was interesting to hear that the Cardinals felt that Lenon projected better to the WILB spot than Foote. Lenon did have two very productive years in Detroit before getting cut by the Patriots, signed by the Rams and only registering 42 tackles in 10 starts last year. What concerns me is that the only time in recent years he played in the 3-4, it did not go as well as planned in that he was cut by the Patriots.

I think Lenon will come in here highly motivated and may be a nice surprise. I think he will be inspired to finally play on a winning team, rather than on a cellar dweller. So, we'll see.

The Boldin trade...again...I think the Cardinals did as well as they could. It already enabled them to trade for Kerry Rhodes and still have another 4th round pick.

However, there's still a great deal of work left to do this off-season. It could well be that the Cardinals still don't have the starting two ILBers on their roster yet. They have to settle the CB and #4 S situation. I think they could use another edge pass rusher who is less of a hybrid 3-4 OLB and more of a DE to go opposite of Porter in the 4 man rush. And the team needs some added depth at WR and NT, and two starters at K and FB.

The work is still in progress, but thanks to Whiz's and the FO's persistency , the Cardinals are, to quote Chicago, "feeling stronger every day."

Good stuff Mitch. I don't think Porter was Whis's firts choice but was a very good plan B. IMO Lenon is a best of what was left choice...Stuff happens. I also hope that moving to a 3-4 improves his play.

So a perfect offseason...No, but a VERY Good offseason YES!!!!!!!!!
