Do I think that he is the savior that many seem to think? No. Do I think that we should hire him because "he can't be any worse"? No.

We would be better off hiring a legitimate GM and going with another option.

We might be better off, but this is the Bidwills that we are talking about. Giving Carroll the "power" might be the closest thing that we get to being "legitimate".

It would be exciting to have Pete Carroll running the Cardinals. I would love to see that happen.

So he was fired after one year (bad sign)

Took a talented Patriot team far his first year and got worse each year thereafter. (Bad sign)

Why not give the "power" to a GM with a proven NFL track record like Ron Wolf? Either way, it will cost alot.

I actually have a pretty good idea why though. If Bidwill hired Carroll as GM/HC he only has to pay one guy for two jobs.

I'm with you, if he wants coach/gm to take the job no chance, it just doesn't work in the NFL.

The why not answer is simple, it is because we have the Bidwills.

Your reasoning, is the same reasoning that I have as well.

In 1994, Carroll was elevated to head coach of the Jets, but he was fired after one season with a record of 6-10.

Carroll was hired for the next season by the San Francisco 49ers, where he served as defensive coordinator for the following two seasons (1995-96). His return to success as the defensive coordinator led to his hiring as the head coach of the New England Patriots in 1997. His 1997 Patriots team became Division champions and made the playoffs, but his subsequent two teams did not fare very well - losing in the wild card playoff round in 1998, and missing the playoffs after a late-season slide in 1999 — and he was fired after the 1999 season. His combined NFL record as head coach was 33-31.

This is awful???

I bet you have paragraphs about Denny Green's ineptness.
That's phenomenal considering Cards... I'll take that in a heart beat...

I think the league should have a program that pays a GM's salary or at least most of it and that they would retain the right to force a team to hire one, sort of a remedial program for "special" teams.

To get out of the program you must have won at least 2 playoff games in 50 years and if not you're in the program until you win a Super Bowl.

Dennis Green, with all of his mediocrity, still has a better winning percentage in the NFL than Pete Carroll.

Cool we should hire him then.

Not that I want Pete Carroll but one point people ought to notice when looking at his time with the Pats is I don't think it was HIS idea to trade Curtis Martin to the Jets(and Parcells)? He had Martin one year, won 10 games, and then they traded him. He got Robert Edwards nice rookie year, 9 wins, then Edwards tears his knee up and they win 8 the next year with Terry Allen as their leading rusher, and Pete gets canned.

The guy who replaced him won only 5 games the first year, some guy named Belichick. That was his 5th losing season in 6 years as an NFL coach.

I don't want Pete but I do think his NFL record is better than he's given credit for, I just think he's the wrong kind of guy for our team, and I don't want a coach/gm.

Well if people are thinking that any coach that has a winning record in the NFL would be good for us it kind of fits that rationale, doesn't it?

Any coach?? We are talking about Pete Carroll here. He is just not "any" coach. Yes, college and NFL are different monsters, but there is no telling how much knowledge Carroll has gained from his years at USC. Carroll might have the best 5 year stretch in college football history.

I understand not liking the choice, but Pete Carroll is not just "any" coach.

There is also a report going around here that it's been confrimed that Tressel would be interested in taking over the Cleveland Browns. It's kind of the exact same story just switch the parties around.Maybe the NC game will be the last for both coaches.Of course OSU wins that game 37-23.

I won't try and hide the fact that I really don't want to hire a college coach. Especially if I'm not too impressed with what he has done previously in the NFL. If a real football guy was GM and picked him, I wouldn't have any problems with it. If Bill, Bill & Mike get together and hire this guy I will be very scared.

Forgive me for not knowing, but who do you want as a "coach"? Assuming that the hiring of a GM is either outside the range of possibility, or just won't happen, who would you be confortable with us hiring, and what has he done in the NFL?

This doesn't even matter. Your guy, my guy. I'm pretty much of the opinion that the Cards aren't going to do much until they get a real football guy in charge. Without one I don't think that it will matter. We will be mediocre.

Al Saunders has done wonders for Washington's defense. Definitely a guy that I'd like to hitch my wagon to.

Vermeil or bust, and I don't even want Vermeil that much.

Where are the Cardinals going to find a real football guy who can stop players from growing 10 thumbs and two left feet as soon as that player signs a Cardinal contract?

How is that guy going to find a Head Coach who won't immediatley forget how to manage the clock, personnel, and the media as soon that coach signs a Cardinal contract?

Regarding the slightly over .500 record of Pete Carroll, I'd like to submit the resume of Bill Belichick as a head coach before he landed in Boston. According to Wikipedia:

"From 1991 until 1995, Belichick was the head coach of the Cleveland Browns. During his tenure in Cleveland, he compiled a 36-44 record, leading the team to a playoff win in 1994. Many fans in Cleveland, however, remember him as the man who benched and then cut much-beloved quarterback Bernie Kosar in 1993, a move that sparked great controversy. In Belichick's last season in Cleveland, the Browns would finish 5-11. In November of that year, Browns owner Art Modell announced he would move the team to Baltimore after the season."

I'd love to see Pete Carroll come in.

Ah Hah!

The voice of reason raises its ugly head - You don't automatically hire the right guy just because his resume is spiffy. You've got to dig beneath the numbers to find out what the guy is really made of.

I'd add other personal qualities like: "How does the guy react to adversity?" "Is he intellectually honest?" "Can management trust him to place the team's best interest above his own?" "Is he a smart guy?" and "What kind of judgment does he exercise when faced with tough decisions?"

I agree. I don't like a coach/GM combo. There should be check and balances and coaches should concentrate on coaching. Last time that happenned for us, it was a complete mess (hint: a fat guy riding a horse, winner in town... wink, wink).
