COACHES CALL RODNEY HARRISON DIRTIEST PLAYER

Posted by Michael David Smith on July 1, 2008, 1:22 p.m.
In an effort to find out who’s the dirtiest player in the NFL, ESPN.com surveyed head coaches and asked them to name just one player who’s the dirtiest of them all.
Of the 17 coaches who supplied an answer, 11 of them chose Patriots safety Rodney Harrison.
The coaches answered anonymously and didn’t explain their answers, but this is obviously no surprise, as Harrison has a reputation for taking cheap shots.
However, ESPN.com’s Mike Sando reports that there’s one NFL player who has more personal foul penalties than Harrison over the last seven seasons: Cardinals safety Adrian Wilson, with 17. Wilson didn’t get a single vote for dirtiest player, and neither did Saints defensive end Will Smith, who is tied with Harrison for the second-most personal fouls (14) in the NFL since 2001.
Cowboys safety Roy Williams got two votes for league’s dirtiest player, and Giants linebacker Antonio Pierce, Steelers receiver Hines Ward, Titans center Kevin Mawae and Bears center Olin Kreutz each got one.

thats because most of adrians penalties are BS!

If he had 4 or 5 of them I might agree but 17! At that amount either there is a conspiracy against Wilson or he really is doing it. I dont think its a conspiracy. Maybe he hasnt actually done it recently but when you have a history of something Refs do scrutinize you more often which was probably the Baltimore case which was the wrong call. The year he made the pro bowl I remember him getting legit calls against him and being pissed at him for doing it and doing it so obviously.

I remember 2 games this year that were shifted by his penalty and then later mentioned that it really was not a penalty, one of them was baltimore.

Adub lays wood and lays it hard, the refs take it as a foul.

Yes, THIS year. But how much of the previous 15 out of the 17 penalties were bogus. I cant think of many. Like I said early those 15 penalties prior to this past season played a big role in this seasons penalties, refs scrutinizing Wilson even more then other hard hitters of the NFL. There are hitters that lay the wood just as hard as Wilson but dont get as many of those calls. Are they just picking on Wilson. I tend to not think so. Once players get a rep they tend to get called for it more often even though they probably wouldnt have called it on another player. Its wrong but thats how refs in every sport work.

Like Chuck Cecil, that guy was vicious and was known for it. Was on the cover of SI because of it. He was called for even the slightest tap on guys later in his career whether it was warranted or not.

I guess but if that were the case wouldnt he get a dirty player vote?

How bout he gets bad calls because he is a cardinal? that makes sense too.

Playboy article

I remember a mid-70's Playboy article. It interviewed a Redskin's DB. The same question of who was the dirtiest player was asked. His answer was pluralistic. He responded, "The entire Cardinal offensive line."

But there is a difference between dirty plays such as late hits, shots to the kidneys in a pile up, and so. Then there is just in the game hard hits to the head, in the heat of the moment fouls.

As for getting calls because he is a Cardinal. Dont buy it one bit. Its a matter of one of or a combo of, usually being one of the younger teams in the league, having bad coaching staffs, coaching turnover, undisciplined teams, bad records and players just get lazy as the season go ones, and so on. Packers were right there with Penalties last year, Eagles the year before that. Packers were the youngest team in the league, and the Eagles coaching staff lost focus because of internal turmoil with Owens and the HC own family issues. I dont buy into the consipracy theory stuff and the Man is out to get the lowley Cardinals.

You did now want to be in a pile up where refs couldnt protect you with that group thats for sure. Biting, kidney punches, arm bars, stomping, eye pocking dirt in the eyes, you name it they did it.

Zactly!

Errrr that call in Baltimore......pisses me off
MDCards fan, PACardsfan, and I wanted to burn the ref at the stake when we left the stadium that day. I felt violated in an un-manly way.

It is ridiculous. Maybe not all the penalties. But some of the ones he has recieved for clean hits are outrageous.

Penalties that are no more than "you hit the guy too hard" are BS.

But the ticket, take the ride. You can't sell me that these guys make millions because the game is voilent, and then take the voilence out of the game and they keep their millions.

A-Dub is a train......he hits people so hard, the refs cant believe it when they see a SS knock the heck out of a 250 pound TE........And that hit was clean.

Same thing happened when he popped the helmet off the SF TE. Shoulder to head....perfectly legal.

IMHO the reason that A-Dub gets so many calls is that he doesn't wrap up. He goes for the "blow up" hit everytime. That, I think make the Officals look at his hits differently. Sure there are other that do it, but If he would just wrap up and go to the ground with the guy he is tackling It wouldn't look like a penalty.

I don't have breakdown of when he got the penalties but it sounds like he's toned down in the past couple of seasons. That may have something to do with him not getting any votes as well. He may have had several 'cheap shots' a couple of years ago no one is going to remember a personal foul from 6 or 7 years ago.

Another interesting bit from that article was that Chike leads the league in either late hits on the QB or unneccessary roughness, I cant remember which.

Since his last year in Denver Berry leads the league in offsides penalties per game.
