Shows the Suns Current Evaluation 2008 Prediction of 50 wins and a 2nd place finish in the Pacific

http://scoutingthenba.com/blog/category/phoenix-suns/

Only optimistic part if the Suns ONeal and Hill can stay healthy for at least 72 games. This team could win an additional 5 games.

With nash playing only 70 games -according to porter- 50-55wins sounds a bit generous. I think 48-50 would be a good number with nash sitting out 12 games. This year, Denver tanks w/ no camby, the warriors sink into the ocean without ellis, Davis, and Dallas will also struggle. I see the suns making the playoffs if healthy, even with 48-50 wins. I see lakers, hornets, rockets, spurs, jazz finishing ahead of the suns and the blazers putting the heat on the suns for 6th place in the seedlings.

If you really think Nash will sit out 12 games, then I've got a solar-powered flashlight to sell you.

Just taking the coach at his communitated intentions. The way they are talking up dragic, its almost like they believe nash will rest.

Recent comments suggest that the "sit out 12 games" is not in the plans due to their failure to get a veteran point guard. It seems clear they have shifted to the "fewer minutes per game" theory.

12 Games -- big deal

I don't see why sitting Nash for 12 games is so unthinkable. Pick any 12 games at random. The Suns were probably going to lose 3-4 of those games even with Nash, and they'll probably win 3-4 of those games without Nash, so you're talking a net of 4-6 additional losses on the season -- and even that could possibly be avoided if you pick your games wisely by sitting him for the easy wins or the easy losses. That's probably enough to drop you a few seeds, sure, but not that big a deal. If you get even one extra playoff win because of the rest that you otherwise wouldn't have gotten, then it's worth it, if you ask me.

not necessarily. in all odds the suns will sit nash in easy-win sort of games so that he doesn't waste any energy playing in games we could win without him. i wouldn't be surprised to see us win all of the games we voluntarily sit nash for because they will probably be against some of the easier teams in the league.

If they're going to sit Nash, it would make sense that it was the tail end of a back to back especially if it's against a lightweight. I can see them sitting Shaq more than Nash, particularly if they're hitting a team without a really dominant big fella. First, guys like Dragic and Lopez have to prove that they can be productive with major minutes.

IMHO there is not much gained by sitting Steve out early in the season. Unfortunately, there are not a lot of gimmie games in Jan Freb in the seceond of back to backs.

If they could, I'd like to see the incorporation of plays that did not rely so much on Steve handling the ball. Physical wear and tear comes from getting beat up, not from running up and down the court.

That, plus he needs to retire his willingness to take charges.

It's just not worth it in the long run.

I sort of agree with your sentiment but I don't think it's realistic. Because Steve lacks outstanding athletic ability and height he is more or less forced to play position defense. However, if Shaq, Amare and Lopez could guard the basket better it might help. The wear and tear Nash has taken over the past four years may or could shorten his career. The Suns desperately need at least one of the rookie PGs to help carry the load. I know it is a lot to ask of a rookie PGs but IMO this is what the Suns need.

It sounds like the new scheme will push guys away from the point rather than funnel them into the middle. This will not STOP people from going down the lane and forcing Nash to take charges, but it may reduce it somewhat.

In any case, Nash takes a lot more pounding running into the picks and the few charges he takes and the abuse he gets from defenders is a much bigger problem. He can prepare to fall properly without indury a lot more than when guys just try to beat him up..

Change of subject - I'd like to see the Suns develop a pick and roll play with Shaq just to see who is willing to take a charge from a 325 pound guy.

I hate combo stats that do not show the internal stats that are being combined. It makes it impossible to do a sensitivty analysis (or else have to dig to figure out what is going on.)

My preference is to try to separate out stuff like how many minutes are played. Things like points per minute and rebounds per minute are easier to work with than "Court Impact Players". The more stats that get combined, the harder it is to make sense of it.

How do you use a stat that uses both rebounds and free throw shooting? What weight to you give to assists? How important is a player who shoots only when open but hits a lot of shots compared to a guy who shoots a lot and scores a lot, but has a much lower percentage?

In basketball, the role a guy plays is effects his stats as well as being caused by his stats. For example, the fourth or fifth option will not have plays run for him and may not get shots with enough time to work with. A low post guy on a team with shooters faces different defenses than one with all drivers. Burying this in a single combo stat misses the team construction and offensive strategy.

IMHO, if Nash only worried about his own stats, he'd be near the top but the team wouldn't be.

I think one of the most tell tales is the drop off Steve Nash had from 2006/7 season to the 2007/8 season.
2006/7 - 35 CI-Value top5 in The NBA
2007/8 - 20 CI-Value Ranked 34th in the NBA
*2008/9 - 18 CI- Value He will be a top 50 player in the NBA (estimated) 14pts - 9.5ast and the key will be how many games he can play.

When Rashard Lewis is more of an impact player than steve nash, some serious questions should be raised! I suppose one more "idiot stat" was needed to keep people interested who cant understand the game and the way its played. When an opponents entire defense is designed to stop one guy, others will benefit. Im LOL thinking what teams do to stop Rashard Lewis .... probably nothing at all, they are more worried about turkoglu and howard. Its kind of like Terrel Owens getting double and triple teams, leaving open a young wideout to score. Who really gets credit for those scores? Most of those stats are heavily influenced by other players. Nashs stats took a major hit with the arrival of shaq, he immediately lost 3asst/game(likely to marion). Im sure the CI stat recorded the dropoff as nashs demise.
