Before the trade, I started a thread about what I felt Q needed to work on over this summer.

I think it was several threads, actually. ;)

to dovetail off this, i'm hoping that they used the jake voskuhl exception for the deal. in other words, that diaw will eat into the jj exception and jones comes of $1.9M. that would be the best possible thing at this point because it would keep the maximum portion of the exception available.

it may have gone down too, because if its the jj exception, it can't be used as of now, and it certainly wouldn't be announced on suns.com

My understanding was that we used the Voshkul exception in the JJ to Atlanta trade. Diaw came for the Voskul exception, JJ went for picks. While we ended up with less, it was better because, while exceptions can be split up, they cannot be combined.

So, instead of a 1.6 TE and a 4.9 TE, we ended up with one 6.1 TE. 2 plus of that we're using for JJ3. We couldn't have gotten that much out of the Voshkul exception.

I would have preferred that Jones fit into the Voskuhl exception too, but it's still a good signing. Jones is young, he's smart, he can play defense, and most importantly, he's supposed to have a great shot.

I'm expecting Jones to be Casey Jacobsen, with a little more length and a better shot--if that's what the Suns are getting here, it's unquestionably worth the price they're paying. Ideally, Jones will be reliable enough to expand the team's rotation and give the older swingmen extra rest throughout the season.

Q brought intangibles during the regular season. Not only that, he was nails at putting the dagger into an opponent.

Anybody who scoffs at what Q did last year, simply did not watch this team close enough.

I can't really add any more than that, because that should cover it.

This is why we were able to get KT for Q and his ugly contract.

Q was extremely streaky. When he was hot he was great. He did put the dagger in many teams last season. However his overall three-point shooting was 35.8%. That means for every game or stretch in a game where he shot lights out there was one or two games or stretches in games where his shooting was awful.

George, I would also disagree that Q was important to the team early on in the season. If you remember, he was horrible for most of November. Everybody was questioning his signing even though the team was playing well. he shot 34.5% from the field and just 26.9% from beyond the arc in 14 games in November. In fact if you just hope that November away his season averages would jump from 38.9% to 39.8%, and his three-point shooting would have jumped from 35.8% to 37.4%.

We've heard conflicting reports on what Q brought to the locker room. Of course the negative reports came out after he was traded. I've got to imagine that his happy trigger finger wore on guys like JJ and even Shawn Marion at times.

Even though I did not like the price tag I think the Phoenix Suns would have been better with JJ... at least for the next season. Regardless of whether JJ was traded I think moving Q was a good move on the court and financially.
