What if old dollar Bill goes to Rod Graves and gives him this option: I will let you spend 10-12 million dollars in up front signing bonus money to go out and get a bigtime free agent or two or you can spend that 10-12 million to bring in a bigtime head coach and a great staff. If you choose the first option you get to spend bottom feeder money on a coach but if you choose the second option you are going to be very limited on free agent spending.

What do you do?

I still contend that we have enough talent to be competetive, if not contend for a championship.

We need a coach!

I choose coach. I've seen how great coaching staffs (leaders) can make a difference with modest talent. A Bill Parcells, Dick Vermeil, Jeff Fisher, Andy Reid, or Bill Belichik lead staff would have found a way with this Cardinal team to have won at least eight games.

Up front signing bonus money, and free agent spending are all included in the salary cap.

Coaching is NOT included in the salary cap, teams can spend whatever they feel necessary on coaching, scouting, and player comfort. These things are what the Cardinals always skimp on, and what has held this franchise back for decades. Now that the revenue streams from the new venue are in sight, I fully expect the orginization to use some of that revenue to do what I ask in my signature.

Great post. I have saying all along, they must spend money before the Cactus opens. You have to spend money to make money. This team needs coaches...then after the purging of players the new guys don't want, start tossing money at FAs and let the coaches do their work.

Actually...

we need to do both.

I think the point Lex makes is key to this "what if" question.

Bidwill needs to open his wallet and bring in top coaching AND FA player talent.

Honestly, after the last 16 years supporting this miserable product and being given a brand new stadium, he owes the fans and Arizona the price of doing both.

Unless I see that kind of commitment from him, the giant sucking sound you hear will not be coming out of my wallet after Season Ticket Renewals are mailed.

I think that if you have to choose one or the other, a great coaching staff can do more to invest legitimacy in your franchise than a couple more overpriced free agents can. The top-tier free agents know they're going to get the "Quan" wherever they go, but they also have the luxury of going somewhere where they can win. Vonnie Holliday didn't go to KC because of the great climate year-round, and neither did Rosie Colvin.

If you have a great coach and a good staff, you'll find that you get a discount from top-tier FAs so that they can win a title.

Coach. Because I think a good coach will get more out of what we have.

If Bill Bidwill gives Rod Graves the above option, it will just perpetuate the mediocrity that the Cardinals franchise has been muddled in for such a long time.

While I don't think it would cost 10 to 12 million to build a coaching staff, it might take 3 to 5 million alone to get a quality head coach. This would be a big step for the Cards IMO. Because, IMO, a "quality" coach will more than likely demand autonomy, including input on the draft and free-agency. Also, if the Cards sign a "quality" coach, it may be a message to the league that they finally wish to compete. They may find themselves able to sign free-agents for salaries commensurate with what other teams are signing players. Instead of having to overpay to bring in players, or losing players that sign elsewhere to play for less money.

As another poster indicated, the Cards need both. Scimping on either will keep the Cards as cellar dwellers. But, I will say that in this era of the Salary Cap, and "parity" (except where the Cardinals are concerned), a great coach is probably more important than ever. But, alas, in this age of "parity", I don't think the Cards' talent is on a par with the rest of the league; therefore, even a great coach would have the "deck stacked against him".
