1.5 games out of number one... we really might be able to do it this time!

Of course, that's only until the league steps in with its fixed lottery draw and Cleveland or Boston miraculously gets the number one pick.

The good news is that this year the Suns don't need the number one pick to win. Top 4...5...maybe even top 7 could be franchise-altering.

But top 1 sure would be nice!

(Also, the Celtics can't get the number one pick this year. They'll end up number two I'm sure.)

Here is a refresher concerning the Suns draft picks in the upcoming draft.

Of course the Suns have their own draft choice which is currently slotted for #5.

The Suns would only land the Bucks pick if it falls between No. 11 and No. 16, otherwise the Bucks get to keep it. Milwaukee's pick is at No. 19 right now, but the Bucks are just two games ahead of the team at No. 16.

The Suns get Miami's pick if it is not in the Top 7 of the draft. Right now it is at No. 22.

The Suns also have several second round picks at their disposal in the 2018 draft (their pick at No. 35 overall, the Hornets' pick at No. 40, Milwaukee's pick at No. 49 and the Raptors' pick at No. 57).

Griz almost won. Likely would have had tyreke played. And they are trading him, their best player this season. They are doing a good job out-tanking us.

Key games tonight. We want the Sixers to beat the Heat. Double whammy there.
Knicks to beat the Bucks. That is a double whammy one too.
New Orleans over OKC would be nice.

I always root for the Suns to win, but the Jazz are looking good lately, and that helps us.

Detroit just beat Miami. That is excellent for us for BOTH our later picks. The Miami pick just jumped to 17th.

Now if the Nuggets could somehow beat the Warriors and Pelicans beat the TWolves.

BTW. fivethirtyeight.com predictions as of this moment.

Suns. Worst record. #2
Heat. #22
Bucks. #18

The Bucks pick is protected 1-10 and 17-30 in 2018.

Definitely has been the case recently...

The best players so far from last draft are Tatum (3), Markkanen (7) and Mitchell (13).

Teams who picked 2, 4, 5 and 6 in 2016 would trade their choice for Murray who went #7.

And of course Turner and Booker went 11 & 13 in 2015.

John Collins, Jordan Bell, Kuzma and Dillon Brooks would move way up as well. Collins would probably outperform Lauri if Atlanta were not keeping his minutes in check to aid their tanking efforts.

Murray was the guard who shot FTs with his eyes closed, right? I was interested in selecting him that year.

Dillon Brooks was a steal at #45 as well as Jordon Bell at #38.

Gut feeling... the Suns drafted Davon Reed where they did is because another team showed interest. The same with Tyler Ennis in the 2014 draft.

The Suns should not be swayed by the chatter of other teams. Some of it can be deliberately misleading.

I don’t see how it matters. They clearly thought much more of Reed than the did Bell. Thus if they were hearing chatter that Reed would get picked soon after their pick than I don’t see the problem with just taking the player you prefer at that spot.

Also I would point out that we haven’t gotten a fair chance to see what Reed is capable of yet. Let’s see what we have over the next year or two before we make the determination that we made the wrong pick.

Not too long ago there were people calling Jackson a bust and saying we should have taken Markennan, Fox or DSJ over him. However now I think it is fair to say that there are far less of those people now that Jackson is starting to come along. Bottom line is we need to be patient with these young guys.

We are talking about second round picks here, not early first round picks.

My thoughts were the Suns should have picked BPA at #32 in the the 2017 draft. I guess it can be argued that Reed was just that, but the scouting services did not have him going there. Also he had problems with his knee in college. I think this should have pushed him further back in the second round with high potential candidates still available.

The point I was trying to make, I believe the Suns might be overly influenced by what other teams are thinking. Of course this is only opinion but if it were true, this might be an explanation why Ennis and Reed were drafted where they were. It's only a theory.

Let me be clear, I want Reed to be successful. I just didn't think it was the right strategy to draft him this early in the second round. Hopefully he overcomes the physical and mental hurdles of coming back from another injury to his left knee.

Games to watch tonight.

Detroit vs Portland. Sort half and half here. If Detroit wins they move within two games of Miami. If Portland wins they move ahead of Miami and closer to Milwaukee.
Indiana vs Washington. Same here both teams are neck and neck with Milwaukee
Magic vs. Heat. Well, duh. Magic to win.
Jazz vs Pelicans. A Pelicans win would be good for us tonight.
Hornets vs Nuggets. I don't think it matters. Both are neck and neck with Miami.
Bulls and Kings. It depends on what you want to do "catch up" with the Bulls, or "stay ahead" of the KIngs.
Mavs vs Clippers. I root for the Mavs here. Our own pick is more important than the Miami pick and a win by the Mavs has more impact.

The question is whether to give up on being slotted ahead of Chi, now that they've lost Mirotic and are being rumored to want to move Robin Lopez. Dunn's return wont have that much impact as Jerian Grant is subbing well for him. Same assists & 40% less TO's but 4 pts less scoring. Portis and Lavine are playing again so maybe they'll not lose much ground from Mirotic's leaving. If they shed Lopez, I don't think we have much chance to stay slotted ahead of them. Kings are a lost cause, I'm afraid...

Here’s where we are in crazyland: 1.5 games from the worst record in the league and 1 game from the 8th slot. There are only 2.5 games separating 8 teams from the bottom.

The more I watch the more I hope they sit Booker for an extended period of time. They need help bad. I'd be elated to get the #3, #4, or #5 pick but if the Suns can manage to get the #1 or #2 pick in this draft that would be close to winning a championship. Being able to choose between Doncic and Ayton would be amazing. I think those 2 will end up being the choice for whoever picks #1.
