Hmm...Wasn't Highsmith a 2nd rounder till his combine stats were exposed?

I hope we snag Sean Lee in this draft. This kid is a 3 down LB. 4.5 speed at the ILB position, he can tackle and he can cover. Remember Penn Sate is Linebacker U.

If his knee checks out fine I would be happy with him at pick 58.

Yup. He was projected to work himself into the first with a good combine, but running 4.9-5.0 when you're already undersized is a death sentence. You can't be small and slow in the pros.

I don't believe Spikes will suffer the exact same fate because he has size and strength.

Honestly a LBer clocking at OL speed is really gonna hurt this kid IMO. I could see him dropping to 5th round or lower no matter what article says.

Someone I respect A LOT told me that the 40 yd dash is the biggest and dumbest thing they have draftees test in. Well not those exact words but close. :p

Two words: Ali Highsmith.

Spikes won't go undrafted by any means, but he just hand grenaded his draft stock. Wouldn't mind taking him in the the 3rd or 4th, because I bet he will be there.

That Time Is Somewhat Shocking!

I know people are going to make a lot of this time but, when I watched him play, I was certain he'd be a first round pick! He plays much faster than the time indicates, especially the way he flows through traffic to make plays. If he last beyond the second round, someone will get a steal. In my opinion, the cardinals should take him if he's there in the second round. He'd start immediately.

Anyone have his split times or his times in the short shuttle or any idea how he did in positional drills? If he did well in positional drills and appeared to be instinctive and fluid he'd be worth a 3rd rounder, if not forget it.

This reminds me of 2003 when Boldin ran what a 4.8?
I'd take a flyer on him in the late 2nd. As a side note I see him in the Hayes roll not the Dansby roll.

I think a 4.67.

I still wouldn't touch Spikes before round 3.

I'd take a flyer on him in the 3rd, since we have two, and bury him behind Hayes on the depth chart. Teach the kid humility, which I am told he badly needs, and hope he blossoms into a solid SILB. My sources are hard-core Florida Gator fans that tell me he has attitude problems, so take it with a grain of salt lol

Is the dumbest. But teams to rely way to heavily on it. Especially will with a LB running OL times.

Just a hunch.

Won't be around when we pick in the third.

Times is one thing... playing football another... and he can play.

It was over 4.7, thats why he dropped to the 2nd round.

I do agree with you. 5.0 + 40 is a liability in coverage

I didnt see, but is he out of shape?

Gotcha. With that being said obviously GM's etc. who do this for a living do weigh the 40 time as part of the ranking process.

As I watched the combine on NFL network I thought that how the players got positioned and focused on technicue and how they got out of their stance and stayed low and kept their heads down etc did speak to your opinion on the 40 time is not the end all be all. I would be thrilled if we picked Spikes in the 4th rd and good with it if we picked him in the 3rd rd.

From what I have seen on Televised games, Spikes will still be a pretty good player in my book and I hope cards still find a way to draft him because he will be a great value.

Plus, I like the Cards track record of nabbing players from the State of Florida whos stock has droped for on reason or another. 40 times are highly overrated, though 5.0 is not fast...

Like Buster Davis, who was also a SILB who's stock dropped due to poor measurements? If we want this guy in the 4th he'll be there waiting IMO. Keep in mind that Highsmith was thought to be a 2nd rounder prior to his 4.95 40. Granted he plays a different position, but it is somewhat relevant IMO.

Spike will definately slide BIG but there is also absolutely no way that Hayes has a faster 40 time than 5.00. If he's still there in the 4th, we take him without question.

On the flipside, Penn State LB Sean Lee ran 4.5s at his Pro Day.

I think it's safe to say that he's leapfrogged Spikes.

Still would take Spikes in the third without much thought. Thumpers don't need to be that fast (see: Jeremiah Trotter).

that's fine if we're drafting him to replace hayes (which we'll need soon anyway), but our pressing need is a dansby replacement, and at that speed, he ain't replacing no dansby.

anyone have trotter's time in '98? i'll bet it was still faster than 5.0.

Daryl Washington replaces Dansby. :)
