Disney wants to do it. Jerry Bruckheimer certainly wants to do it. About the only thing standing in the way of another Pirates of the Caribbean film is Johnny Depp, and it sounds like that domino is about to fall.

The Oscar-nominated A-lister is “close to signing a deal” to return to the role of vagabond pirate Capt. Jack Sparrow for a fifth Caribbean effort, The Wrap reports. Back before Rob Marshall’s On Stranger Tides opened in theaters, screenwriter Terry Rossio turned in a script for a fifth Pirates adventure, which prompted Depp to ask Disney to slow down, space the sequels out, and give him time to play other characters.

Then On Stranger Tides earned more than $1 billion in worldwide ticket sales, and Depp apparently changed his tune.

Disney hires writer for 'Pirates of the Caribbean 5'

Disney and Johnny Depp may be getting ready to set sail again as the Mouse House has tapped "Catch Me if You Can" scribe Jeff Nathanson to pen "Pirates of the Caribbean 5."

Jerry Bruckheimer is producing with Depp set to return as Captain Jack Sparrow.

Plot details are unknown, and it's not clear whether thesps from past installments, like Geoffrey Rush or Keira Knightley, would return to reprise their roles.

The "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise has grossed more than $3.5 billion worldwide with the 2011 "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" grossing more than $1 billion worldwide.

I liked the first one a lot.. Watched the second one and lost interest.. I am surprised they up to 5 of these now.. I thought they were only on #3..

3 was god awful and I never bothered to watch 4

2 was pretty bad as well. I avoided watching the first one for a long time and once I saw it I was surprised how good it was. However 2 and 3 were so bad I haven't bothered watching 4 either.

I thought 4 was better than 3. Not great by any means. Again, I just want this one to be another entertaining film worth the ticket. Bottom line is my family and love I the character Jack Sparrow.

I liked the first one although I thought it was slightly overrated. I watched the second one even though I had heard it was one of the worst movies ever. Again, I thought it was slightly overrated. There aren't enough weapons on the planet to get me to watch any more of this crap and I have incredibly low standards.

Captain Jack Sparrow’s tale is continuing, and Will Turner is back for another swashbuckling adventure. A crowd of thousands burst into an uproar of applause when it was announced that Orlando Bloom would be returning for the fifth Pirates of the Caribbean movie. Johnny Depp also took to the stage at the D23 Expo in Anaheim, Calif. on Aug. 15 in full Jack Sparrow costume.

After announcing Will Turner, Johnny came out dressed as Jack Sparrow. He was true to character, acting all drunk and throwing grapes at people in the audience. He even dissed himself, saying he is a Disney “lesion.” Just one day before, Johnny was honored as a Disney Legend.
