Yeah, that's bad. That kind of kitsch really ruined the movie for me. Too much laughable dialogue and completely unoriginal plot.

Avatar is getting way more accolades than it deserves because of the technical advances, which are amazing, but technical advances alone don't make a great film and Avatar definitely isn't great.
Good call sir! Oscar agrees with you.

Looks ok, but I'm tired of the supernatural stuff. Zombies? I guess we should feel fortunate there aren't any vampires in the movie.

Will be seeing it.

Chap,

It is a well known fact that both zombies and vampires existed in the time frame this movie is set in. DUH!

I don't care what they put in the movie as long as it's enjoyable. Supernatural stuff (ghosts, mermaids, giant squids, Davy Jones..etc...) has been a part of pirate lore forever. I just hope to see a bit more of swashbuckling type stuff.

I would like to see something that doesn't have ghosts and mermaids, actually. The best pirate movies were from the 30s and 40s and they didn't have any supernatural mumbo jumbo.

The problem is that it has to be done the right way and by the right people. Renny Harlin and Geena Davis ruined the whole genre back in the 90s.

That never was what these movies were about though. Some of my favorite Pirate movies were ones that I had watched when I was a kid as well. I guess I had different expectations for this franchise. I never did see this franchise as that type of movie. I look to movies like Master and Commander as the closest thing to those.

I never looked at this franchise in that mold. Maybe that is why I see it differently.

Master and Commander was not a pirate movie. Very far from it.

The first Pirates was goofy fun, but I'd be much more interested in a down and dirty pirate movie where pirates are actually portrayed correctly and not horribly cliched like they are in the POTC movies. You're right, this is how the franchise is. But that doesn't take away the want for a real pirate movie.

I actually wrote a pirate movie several years ago where my lead pirate character cuts the tongue out of a Spanish soldier. THAT'S a real pirate movie.

I love the idea of Ian McShane as Blackbeard, but I think the supernatural junk takes a lot of the fun out of it.

This was a franchise based on a ride and produced by Disney. I'm pretty sure they would think a realisitic protrayal of pirating (murder, theft, having short lives end due to malnutrition the overwhelming majority of the time or meeting the end of the noose) wouldn't really work with a family audience.

A more realistic pirate wouldn't be a bad idea but it may have the same problems that portrayals of the Old West do in the fact that the majority of people like the legendary view rather than a true historical one. It can be a difficult balance

That is why I said the "closest thing". Not exactly a pirate movie but in the same vain as those movies that had some great ship to ship battles. I really have not seen a great modern day pirate movie like that.

POTC was based on a fantasy ride so I expect something in the fantasy realm. Just me.

Those are just your opinions. Hardly a majority view I'm betting. These movies wouldnt be near as successful without all the cool effects and supernatural appeal. JMO.

I definitely think the movies could have been better, and not needed the supernatural stuff, but they took the easy way out and added the supernatural.

That said, the movies are still entertaining, even though now they are good rentals and not must see in theatre movies;.

I guess maybe you don't understand the concept of "I think". That generally means that it's my opinion.

I agree, they are entertaining, but I still would like to see a true pirate movie. It doesn't have to be Pirates of the Caribbean, which is what I guess everyone thinks I'm saying.

I agree. It shouldn't have to be PofC.

I definitely agree with you about all of the supernatural junk. They are starting to put supernatural stuff in westerns too from a few recent previews I've seen, which is a crime. I'm thinking HBO would do the best Pirate movie/series. Imagine Deadwood but with Pirates. That would be awesome!

Sounds like we have similar taste in movies. I'm a big fan of realistic action and dialogue. It's hard to buy into prates who never as much utter a curse word. What do you expect from a family movie is the response I've seen. To that I say, pirates aren't family friendly entertainment. I'm sorry.

The argument is that the ride IS family friendly entertainment, so I really don't blame Disney for doing what they did. The first movie WAS pretty fun, after all.

I just think there's more to the genre than what we've seen so far and it'd be nice to see a REAL pirate movie. Your idea about Deadwood but with Pirates would be brilliant. Expensive as all hell, but brilliant. :D

man, that trailer did nothing for me. Looks like a cash grab on the level of Fockers 3... which looks AWFUL.

Johnny Depp returns to his iconic role of Captain Jack Sparrow in an action-packed adventure. McNally as Captain Jack's longtime comrade Joshamee Gibbs, plus Sam Claflin as a stalwart missionary and Astrid Berges-Frisbey as a mysterious mermaid.
