I hope they make it a real swashbuckler, all this supernatural crap got a bit overwhelming. Whatever happened to real plundering by real people??

According to ComingSoon.net, Pirates 4 is a go. They landed an interview with Disney's Head of Production Oren Aviv at the San Diego Comic-Con.

"We're going to shoot 'Pirates 4' in April and May of next year," Aviv told us during our interview. "We are going to release it hopefully in 2011 is the plan." He said that this time they would only be doing one movie this time that would "hopefully be the first of another trilogy."

"It's important to get the story right and it's important to me to scale it down, because we can't get bigger," Aviv admitted. "The movies have subsequently gotten bigger and bigger and very complicated and they were satisfying on so many levels obviously, but I want to kind of reboot the whole thing and bring it down to its core, its essence, just characters." He agreed that there is a lot of Captain Jack Sparrow's back story that we haven't seen yet without confirming or denying that we might see some of that in the fourth movie. Still no word on whether Gore Verbinski might come back for the fourth movie.

I think it's great. My family loves these movies and they are great fun.

first one was great.

Second one was OK.

Third was terrible.

Not looking forward to #4

If the Sparrow backstory was so great, why save it until #4?

Why not use it in #3 instead of the nonsensical Sparrow caught in the parallel universe whatever for an hour and a half?

:doi:

Anywho, I will watch this, but probably not in the theatre.

Exactly. I want pirates that actually "pirate" and/or plunder once in a while.

Kind of like I always wanted Fonzie to actually fight someone on Happy Days.

It's probably due to the same reason why the ride was changed as well.

"Real" plundering by "real" people means "real" blood, guts, and other non-Disney endorsed activites.

If anyone is interested, they cast Ian McShane (Swearengen on Deadwood) as Blackbeard.

Best. Casting. Ever.

Fun movies (the 3rd dragged way too long though), and great they are making another. But what is up with 'rebooting' a franchise that is like a decade old?

I had heard that and like you I am completely stoked. Ian McShane is perfect for that role.

Unless James Cameron writes the screenplay, there is no way the plot of this could be any worse than Avatar's plot.

Come on. Granted, there was nothing groundbreaking in the plot of Avatar, but it was a simple classical plot. It wasn't bad, just done a lot. As opposed to Pirates 3, where the plot was completely nonsensical.

No plot is better than stupid formulaic overused plot. Plus, I hope Pirates can avoid stupid lines from the villians, and the silly words like "unobtainium."

"Get out of Dodge."
"Not is Kansas anymore?"

"I trusted you."
"At first it was just following orders, then it was different."

Yeah, that's bad. That kind of kitsch really ruined the movie for me. Too much laughable dialogue and completely unoriginal plot.

Avatar is getting way more accolades than it deserves because of the technical advances, which are amazing, but technical advances alone don't make a great film and Avatar definitely isn't great.
