from espn boards

azwildbynaturePost #1: Aug 14, 7:55 pm

A lady I work with says that PJ Brown was in downtown Phoenix. According to her, PJ Brown was getting a hair cut from Marion's Favorite Barber.
Sources closes to the Suns say that they have offered him 2 years at 2 million per year with a player option for the 2nd year (much like Hill's deal). The Suns are looking for PJ Brown to play 15-20 minutes a game. The Suns trying to buy his services along with the Mavericks. PJ Brown is said to be very intrigue with the possibilities of playing next to Nash, Amare, Hill and Marion. According to some people, Amare made a personal phone call to PJ Brown and reaterated that the Suns would love to have his services for the 2007-2008 season.

Don't know how credible espn boards are, but this only reinforces what a lot of online sources, forums, blogs, and reports are saying about PJ Brown - much like the HoopsWorld article.

Seems like PJ will be the Suns new backup.

How well he will perform under D'Antoni? Probably not very well. Probably end up getting frustrated by the end of the year under D'Antoni's stubborn rotation and 26 DNP's for PJ Brown.

Another poster said Fox10 News confirmed he is in town, and 2yrs/4mil has been reported previously too.

A P.J. Brown sighting in Phoenix

Or maybe it was Elvis.

A nice guy at KSAZ-TV (Channel 10), the Fox affiliate in Phoenix, answered the phone at 11:26 p.m. Arizona time and did his best to answer a question from Dallas. Yes, the station reported that P.J. Brown was in town Tuesday, talking about a deal with Phoenix GM Steve Kerr. (Sorry, no link).

That would be news for a couple of reasons. Brown's agent, Mark Bartelstein, said Monday that no visits were planned when asked directly. Tuesday, Bartelstein said that Brown might take longer than this week to decide his future.

An agent is supposed to positively spin everything his client does, not flat out lie.

Ah, so that's why they had to get rid of Thomas -- he didn't have enough years left on his contract.

I saw the report by La Cava last night on Fox 10. It was pretty brief, just mentionting that he was in town and he did meet with Steve Kerr. No word on the contract offer though.

It certainly sounds like something is going on. I cannot imagine PJ coming into this bloody heat without being serious. :D

At least it sounds like we're actually in the running for his services. Unless he just happened to be in town for something else and said, "OK, I'll meet with Steve."

His agent saying that he wasn't going on trips, also bodes well. I'd love it if something got done this week.

can somebody do a pj brown vs kurt thomas analysis for me?

are they like the same guy or something?

i don't get it, their stats are like the same, they have the same rep for defense, close to the same size/weight/age.

what exactly is the difference?

The difference is that Kurt Thomas is making $8 mill and PJ would be around the $2 mill range.

Other than that, not much of a difference.

PJ is a little taller, KT is a little grittier. Both have excellent fundamentals on defense. PJ is a little more spry than KT in my opinion. I also think that both can fill good roles on offense when they are laid off. I think KT's midrange game is a little better, but PJ is better at finishing around the basket. Although PJ may be a better jump shooter than I think if he gets wide open looks playing with Nash.

Those were just from my recollections. I'm sure somebody will now show up with percentages from certain spots on the floor and tell me I'm wrong. But who knows?

They are extremely similar players. Brown is an inch or two taller and a bit more agile vertically -- which isn't saying much -- making him a marginally better shot blocker. I've always considered Thomas a bit more fluid offensively. The main difference is age and the fact that, whereas Thomas has already shown that his body struggles to keep up with the Suns' style, we don't yet know one way or the other whether Brown would be up to it. Both players made their careers playing a slow, bump-and-grind style.

PJ doesn't have as good a mid range, but thats okay, we will go to his strengths.

I looked at PJ's shooting and in percentage terms he's actually a better mid range shooter than in close.

It would be nice to know PJ's arm length. From appearances KT does not seem to have very long arms, which is why it seemed like Duncan had no trouble shooting over him. On the flip side, KT is probably stronger than PJ.

Hopefully there's a team option on that second year.

This PJ Brown situation reminds me of when we were going after Brian Grant two years ago. As soon as he was released there was talk the Suns might pick him up, and then he was signed exactly two years ago to a two-year deal at LLE with second-year player option. Supposedly he turned down more money elsewhere to play for the Suns.

Coincidentally, PJ Brown and Brian Grant have the same agent.

Here's hoping that if we do sign Brown, his contribution to the team will be a little bit more significant, because if we are singing another Brian Grant, then all this waiting and speculation is for nothing.

Maybe, but since he was still getting paid a billion dollars a year by the Lakers, the money can't have mattered to him very much.
