Highsmith might have played better high. He certainly couldn't have played worse.

That was an awful display out there from a guy I actually like.

He played bad, but I still like me some Ali Highsmith. He is great on special teams. But not having Hayes and Chike KILLED our run defense.

I now appreciate the prescience of Hayes in the line up. At this point, Ali is nothing more than an above average STer

I fully agree. Highsmith was very disappointing. Hayes' contributions to the defense are often overlooked.

I have said for years and years that Hayes is the most underrated Cardinal. His absence is sure proving a good chunk of that. We lose a lot of gap control without Hayes.

Hayes is a leader too, maybe more so than some people think. I think Highsmith is a great situational LB on the outside to provide a rush but we really need Hayes back

I've said it before - Hayes is the stabilizing force for our defense. Wilson and Dansby may make the bigger plays, but Hayes is always consistent and is a sure tackler.

Highsmith can't do too much in regards to open field tackling.

Played OK for someone that really hasn't played, IMO. But he is without a doubt a big step backwards from Hayes.

A game like this really makes you appreciate Gerald Hayes. He is one of the most unsung stars on the defense IMO. Hopefully he's back next week for Stephen Jackson and the Rams. It's hard to underestimate just how important Gerald is to the run defense. This game showed that more than anything else.

I watched Hayes almost weekly when he was at Pitt & loved drafting him. He was just as consistent in college as he is now. He's strong, smart & steady. We need him back on the field!

where's Buster Davis when you need him :D ? I'm not going to be too hard on Lee Heismith because it was his first significant playing time. He'll get better. He's not going to be a great starter but he'll get in there and do his job and become better with more PT. In the long run, he brings more to the table than Beisel.

he played instead of Hayes, and that shouldnt be the case, he should have played instead of Dansby.

There is a big difference in those two ILB spots and Highsmith skills suit much better Dansby's spot where he can play more coverage and make plays and think less on the run

He had some bad plays, where tackling was an issue, but his positioning and reading was still very impressive, like in last game.

I hope people realize with this game that Hayes is our best Linebacker and he is one of the main reasons our D has been "shutting" down the run for so long time. He is one of the more underrated players that i am aware of

Highsmith will learn and hopefully be able to replace Dansby, his skills fit that position, that is protected from lineman much more than Hayes position. Games like this are extremely important experience for Highsmith.

He has shown in both games that he can read and react and that he understands his assignments. He will get better at tackling, i hope.

First, I completly agree with Early. Highsmith did admirable for playing a position he is completely ill-suited for, SILB. He is just not a gap filler at all which is the main goal of the SILB. Highsmith is a WILB, so I can give him a pass on this past game.

Second, I can also say the run D missed Okeafer. I dont think people realize just how good of a job he is doing setting the edge, just as underated IMO.

Third, I hope in Hayes and Okeafers case the Cards were being super protective of them this past week like they did with Boldin, in order to make super sure they would be ready for the Steven Jackson test coming this week. I hope so becuase if this D without Hayes and Okeafer can give up 164 yards, 6.8 per carry to the likes of Forsett and Rankin(who?) I would hate to see what Steven Jackson could do.

Great points Joe. You might be on to something about getting those 2 healthy. Our next 3 games we face Jackson, Chris Johnson, and Adrian Peterson. I hope like hell we have Hayes and Okeafor for those games.

My thoughts exactly joeshmoe. Yes, who is Rankin?? If he can run on us, then you know how important Hayes is.... Steven Jackson is IMO the best back in this league. At least looking at the full set of skills needed for the position. Hayes and Okeafor NEED to be there if we can stop them. Their passinggame is not a worry at all.

And somehow people just think it's easy to find linebacker thumpers and gap fillers that shut down the runninggame like Hayes is...And that it is hard/impossible to find linebackers like Dansby that are very good in dropping back but inconsistent with tackling, i think every game he either misses at least one or often allows some extra unnecessary yardage..

It's not easy to find Gerald Hayes type of players, not in the NFL... there are so many teams out there that don't have a Gerald Hayes to shut down the rungame consistenly. With him in there, we have been very consistent. Panthers game was the only exception and it wasn't due to Hayes, all inside gaps were shut down but it was mostly Deangelo and Stewarts ability to cut out from the closed scrimmage (like a broken play many times) and still find some holes on the outside for big plays.

Hayes is extremely underrated and he even has ability to make big plays to change the momentum of games. Has happened many times.

I hope Highsmith can work on his tackling, if he does he might have a shot in replacing Dansby. Because the kid obviously was reading and reacting well yesterday.

People don't realize how much Chike contributes in run defense. He makes a lot of tackles. And Gerald is the thumper on this team. I'm still not sure why they didn't re-sign Monty Beisel. He would have helped yesterday IMO.

Gerald Hayes had 10 tackles to lead us in the first game of the season and has been the leading tackler till about 4 weeks ago when Dansby finally went off in one game with I think 12 tackles and has'nt looked back as the leading tackler.

McFadden has also stepped up as the second leading tackler and even after missing a game Hayes was still third in tackling last week before the seahags game with 50 tackles.I sure am glad we had this 3 week run of games we could give Hayes a break. Not sure if pounding him against Steven Jackson all game is gonna make that back feel any better.

It takes more than one person to bring Jackson down. You better have your tackling game down when going after that horse.Earl Campbell comes to mind when seeing what Jackson did yesterday. It'll take a swarming defense to keep him to just over 100 yards next week.

I think the rams played their SB yesterday.Best game they played all year. The titans also scored 4 times in the 4th quarter to come back bigtime on the Bills.Chris Johnson is a major threat to our road game winning streak coming up too.

We really missed those two guys out there.

Highsmith looked out of his league out there.

Highsmiths missed tackles surprised me. He seems to be a really solid tackler on special teams
