"Smart" by Shel Silverstein

My dad gave me one dollar bill
'Cause I'm his smartest son,
And I swapped it for two shiny quarters
'Cause two is more than one!

And then I took the quarters
And traded them to Lou
For three dimes -- I guess he don't know
That three is more than two!

Just then, along came old blind Bates
And just 'cause he can't see
He gave me four nickels for my three dimes,
And four is more than three!

And I took the nickels to Hiram Coombs
Down at the seed-feed store,
And the fool gave me five pennies for them,
And five is more than four!

And then I went and showed my dad,
And he got red in the cheeks
And closed his eyes and shook his head--
Too proud of me to speak!

I love Shel Silverstein. Read at schools all the time and this is one of the very favorites. I hope that the Wiz and the Rod will not get to excited about more for less...See Pace and Johnson draft year.

Shel Silverstien Rocks!

I am with K9 we cannot trade out of the 5 spot. There are too many players that we could benefit from.

Right now the Cardinals can get at least one of these players..unless the QB's slide.

1. Thomas
2. Anderson
3. Peterson

Why trade down? It makes no sense.

There will be plenty of good prospects in the 2nd and 3rd round.

When taken in the context of the first round of the 2003 draft that's hilarious.

Shel Silverstein is too.

"Smart" by Rod Graves

My dad gave me one draft pick
'Cause I'm his smartest son,
And I swapped it for two draft picks
'Cause two is more than one!

And then I took the draft picks
And here is what I'll do
For two reaches I will use them
Pace and Johnson are the two!

Just then, along came old blind Denny
And just 'cause he can't see
"I'll cut guys like Pete Kendall,
Cause he is not like me!"

And I took the team around the league
And showed them Denny's pie,
And they all laughed at what we'd done,
"Next year's draft pick will be high!"

And then I went and showed my dad,
Said Denny and his pie were weak,
But he brought me back with Whis and Grimm--
too proud of me to speak!

The Valley so low.
My dad gave me an '02 draft pick
'Cause I'm his smartest son,
And I swapped it for three other picks
'Cause Bryant was a smelly one!

And then I took the draft picks
And I pleased my old Dad
For lower down I got A. Haynes
Then Portis and Williams, Chad!

My dad gave me an '03 draft pick
'Cause I'd proved really smart,
And I swapped it for three lower picks
'Cause trade-down is an art!

And then I took the draft picks
And here are the picks I made
Instead of two bums I was wise
With Steinbach, Mathis, and Wade!

Armed with this crew of many men,
The Cards ave'd 12 and 4;
Two Super Bowls they won with ease
And look for many more.

The moral is NOT that low picks are better than high, just that high picks by the Cards have stunk up the city as often as trade-downs, and a good judge of talent can win either way. (And that anyone who starts a doggerel thread causes nothing but trouble!)

So one question, K9.

You wouldn't consider drafting down at all?

What if Calvin Johnson fell to us at #5 and the Vikings offered a Ricky Williams type deal? If they offered their #1 (7th overall), #2 and #3 in this draft plus their #2 next year, would you not even consider it?

Depends on who else was on the board. If Calvin Johnson was still available, who's ahead of him?

The talent in this draft falls off sharply after the first 70 or so picks. I think it plateaus a little after the first half-dozen. For a deal like that one, I'd think about it. But the fact of the matter is that teams don't offer that kind of deal. The Giants didn't give that up for the #1 overall pick in Eli Manning. The Vikes aren't going to give it up to move up two spots.

The other thing is that there's a difference between listening when someone offers you a deal that's too good to be true and looking to trade down, which a lot of people here are doing. I don't think you go into the draft hoping that you can move down. When that happens, you get desperate looking for a dance partner, and you end up taking what Graves did from the Saints.

Okay, then we agree.

The 2003 trade down was terrible decision, because the talent in that draft dropped after the first 10 picks or so. Looking to trade down is a stupid idea.

BUT! Not listening to offers when somebody wants to trade up would be even more stupid.

I think there's a chance for us trading down, because the Texans, Vikings, Dolphins and Falcons are all in the marked for QB & WR (Falcons only WR), and they will perhaps pull the trigger if Johnson or Russell fell to #5.

Depending on how the board looks on draft day, whoever we're targeting could be there in the #8-#10 area.

See, that's where we disagree. You're talking about trading down too far. I don't think there are 8 guys that the Cards could want in this draft. I'm not sold on Okoye when we have a veteran version of him locked up long term in Darnell Dockett. I really don't think that any of the teams that you're talking about are going to trade up to get either Russell or Qunn. I'm certain that the Vikes don't want another young QB, and the Texans aren't looking to start over. The Dolphins have a bunch of guys and they're getting older; they want a position player.

The guys that I think the Cards should take are Adrian Peterson (who could go to the Falcons, Vikings, or Texans), Jamaal Anderson (Vikings, Dolphins, and Falcons again), Gaines Adams (same three and the Texans), or the big DT from Michigan. Before the combine and the pro days, these guys are clumped together. After the Combine and pro days, they'll begin to separate themselves.

But for the sake of planning now, we should be looking for playmakers. Teams that are tinkering with depth and the future can afford to trade down. That's not where the Arizona Cardinals are right now, and you're not going to get an impact player with a third round pick in this draft anyway.

I don't have a problem with the Cards trading down if a blockbuster deal comes along. But I don't expect it to because I don't think any of those teams care to jockey for a QB. There's a phone in the War Room for a reason, but the Cards shouldn't use it to dial out and they shouldn't hope that it rings.

I really doubt that whomever we target (and I don't believe we should "target" anyone) will still be on the board 3 to 5 picks after our current place. If you have that many players clumped together on your draft board, you're not going a very good job of scouting.

This is what I was expecting when I read the initial poem.

Kudos.

I said depending on how the draft board shakes out....

Right now, there's 7 Elite player IMO, and I agree that it would be insane to trade down further than that. I believe that Anderson, Adams and Branch are rated equally at the moment, and given our needs, there really isn't any difference we get one or the other. But if Graves has a player head above the rest, when we're selecting at #5, then I agree that he should make that pick.

If, however, Landry or Quinn sneaks up to that group, then I would have no problem trading down, because Branch, Landry or Anderson should be there at #8 or #9.
