Denver vs Phoenix lifestyle is a preference choice so I guess that depends on the Payton’s specific cup of tea.

Denver has a better ownership setup, but man that Russ contract and draft pick compensation is rough. Despite what others tell ya we have a pretty good opening here. Kyler is not exactly Mr. Popular but Russ is hated significantly more around the league.
Payton supposedly wants to go to the west coast. Since it’s looking unlikely a job will be open. AZ has a chance based on year round outdoor activities and warm weather.

Another thought - with Payton being avaliable (and seemingly interested) it may make MB more open to move on from KK.

I know this is going to make people sick but we need Dalllas to win at least one playoff game so they don’t fire their coach. Would be super helpful if the Chargers could do the same.
Let’s have them meet in the Super Bowl to make sure

I'll take it. My dad is a Cowboys fan (and likes the Chargers) and he would go if they got in. He'd get me a ticket as well.

But of course Payton not having any chance at those teams would force him into a bad decision, hopefully us.

I think he will go to Denver personally. No young QB to worry about. An offense set up to run the ball and play defense. Good defensive personnel. Big ownership pockets. He may be the biggest splash after Payton and Denver wants a big splash.
Denver is a terrible football situation though. They just fired a well-respected Black defensive minded head coach, and the GM is likely to get termed in the first season or two after making the hire.
Unless another opening pops up, Arizona might be his best option.

Or he could… not coach in 2023?

This completely.

Dude. Denver is one of the most livable cities in the country.

If she wanted to be a Real Housewife or something, that's one thing. That's why Carmelo Anthony and Lala had to get out of Denver. But Denver isn't Detroit or Green Bay or Tampa.

I'm sure it is. But they spent their lives in No and LA. I don't get the feeling they fancy winter weather.

Which would indicate why the teams being linked are both LA teams and AZ.

I'm more a Cardinal lover than Cowboy hater especially with them in a different division. Pete has jumped to #1 on the naughty list.

Payton grew up in Illinois and coached with Philly, New York, and Dallas before being hired by New Orleans.

How you can confidently speculate about the climate preferences of Payton and his new wife is just wild.

Apparently he’s said it in discussions with colleagues

I think Payton waiting is a legit option.

Arizona is definitely the best option is you don't want to deal with a rookie QB. A lot of it comes down to how much Bidwill is willing to spend and how much he wants to dictate the GM.

He hasn't coached or lived in a colder climate for 20 years.

I'm not speculating. Sources say his preferences are Chargers, Rams and Cards.

All very different football situations. Rams are 4-10 with no first round pick, AD on the way out, and cap hell. McVay would only quit because its so bad. Yet he's interested?

The only common denomination between the 3 is climate.

Plus I've seen a number of people saying he wants to coach somewhere with warm weather.

Don't rule out Denver. They just announced that the HC will be in charge of all football operations reporting to the owner. This makes GM Paton accaually a lame duck. Money is no object for the Walton's and could pay Payton $10+ million per year. Russell Wilson is the problem.

It would also be a bit odd since Payton's apparent choice for his DC going forward was recently the Broncos' HC.

Same. I don’t really care about the Cowboys anymore but I know so many others here still do.

Same. That guy doesn’t need to rush into a situation. Especially one that’s fraught with major questions both in the present and future due to Kyler’s injury history/contract.
He can definitely be choosy. Cardinals are a third choice but probably the only opening this year.

With Keim's continued employment in doubt he would have veto power or even the ability to pick the GM.
